david mayer’s career and background is marked by a desire to keep moving and experiencing new perspectives. having finally settled in berlin, the german dj and producer has built up an enviously diverse back catalogue on labels such as connected frontline, objektivity, gruuv, audiomatique and keinemusik. with his first release on acid pauli and nico stojan’s ouie label, mayer brings his trademark groove to the fore once more. ‘the call’ is a mid tempo chugger built around a kick, clap and 808 blip, before a more organic groove develops. the slowed down chants and wigged out synth line take the vibe into afro cosmic territory, without losing the original energy. ‘sooner’ is a little more urgent - a crisp, forward leaning rhythm and a deep, subby bass lead the way, before another frazzled synthesiser takes us on a melodic walkabout. ‘black queen’ is another example of mayer’s slick drum programming, keeping things zesty on the dance floor but with acres of space to lose yourself in.

second proper studio album originally released in 1976 by the king of turkish psych/anatolian rock. recorded in belgium with help from session musicians related to placebo, janko nilovic and mad unity among others, nick the chopper features lyrics in english, huge orchestral sections, and re-arrangements of many of the melodies from his masterpiece 2023. bar&#305,&#351, spent his whole life trying to communicate to the wider world outside turkey. this was his last attempt at doing so with an album before turning to a travel television show to visit faraway places and talk to the young and old, one on one. every production trick of the glorious 1970s was deployed to push bar&#305,&#351, up the european charts, and now they can push him right into your brain instead.

next up on francis harris exceptional imprint scissor & thread comes a collaboration with american producer, dj aakmael. aakmael has built a reputation for some of the deepest, rawest house music sounds coming out of the states, releasing well-received tracks on the likes of freerange records, release sustain, kolour dogmatik and ndatl. returning to scissor & thread, aakmael and label boss harris cook up an intoxicating vibe across this 5 track ep. each shares a track and work together on the fifth, while also remixing each others solo cuts. first up aakmaels deep muzik- a quintessential nod to its self-proclaimed mission statement. skittering drums, a shuffling groove, deep keys, and chords make up this essential opener. franks (aka francis harris) all that light mix shows another side, finding pockets of space and developing the fizzing percussion to produce an equally affecting piece of dancefloor bliss. sharing production duties from the outset on mercy of means, the guys slip into an easy mid-tempo groove with plenty of depth - the rhythm rolls along and offers the perfect basis for some sublime melodic touches. franks part song also hones in on the subtle deep grooves. bumping, slightly filtered and saturated drums provide the main body, with beautiful washes and keys finding their way through, aakmaels remix beefs up the groove somewhat, making the snares snap harder and kick hit a little stronger, but the essence of the tracks melodic atmosphere remains perfectly in place.

for our first anniversary as a label, we have prepared a compilation of tracks by our closest associates, collaborators and some randomly found favourites, who might also make future appearances on our imprint.

frits wentink s bobby donny label welcomes reykjavík producer felix leifur for more lush house explorations across four new cuts. the producer last released on this label in 2017 and his new one finds him again exploring deep and organic grooves, rough drums and jazzy pads. the tarleton appreciation club has real, live sounding drums making for a spaced out house cut coloured with dreamy pads and muffled vocal samples that have an aching beauty. parts is a brilliantly jazzy jam with bright chord vamps, wooden hits and clipped vocals making for a track somewhere between the styles of moodymann and max graef. robbi is another atmospheric track with pads and intimate melodies lingering in the air above choppy drum work that makes you want to wiggle. closing things down is juledreng, another perfectly roughed up bit of house with saturated chords and tons of reverb drawing you into its cosy little world.

in its second venture into reissuing hidden gems of electronic music produced in eastern europe in the 20th century, little beat different issues focuses on the work of a czech composer, musician and producer, alexander goldscheider. this lp samples alexander goldscheider’s music produced for records, films, tv and even an art exhibition in the space of 25 years starting from 1975.

7 inch single such as the record itself (alcazar), the second single chaos takes its influence from the golden age boom-bap era of hip-hop, that is smooth as velvet and helps transmit its message of social critique, love and hope. woxows message has been perfectly delivered by 2 great rappers, akil the mc from jurassic 5 (who doesnt need introduction) and blurum13 (well known for his works with dj vadim), while on the other side the chorus sang by the legendary ken boothe from jamaica it sounds like the icing on the cake, topping the tune with his soulful voice and a work songs feeling.

new blundetto 7inch. the second from his new album “slow dance” . after ken boothe, blundetto invited another legendary jamaican singers : little harry (dancehall figure and burner of dubplates) and cornell campbell (whose reggae falsetto can be heard on island productions from studio one to bunny lee) to add their voices to his burning riddims.

obsessed with the cosmos, asteroids and relativity, panstarrs of which we know little, except that he is not a total stranger to the electronic scene, nor to technorama, delivers here a first 5 tracks of 100% electro rooted detroit influenced music. influences found in the works of other artists such as drexciya (in all their projects), klaus schultz, tangerine dream, model 500, ectomorph and many others ... with his head in the clouds (the oort one) but with his feet firmly on the ground, panstarrs lives and works on his musical projects from a little-known mountain, somewhere in france, and whose themes are almost always connected to his obsessions. ice and dust is the first opus of this artist who is already working on a first album. a first ep coming out of the depths of space and now is in its own orbit.

word of advice to funk lovers, there is not a minute to lose. get on board of the big hustle’s spaceship. before we take off, let s do a little history. the band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer sébastien levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70 s old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from steely dan and headhunters, to snarky puppy and soulive. with mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, the big hustle s music has a very large variety of soundscapes. the first destination takes us to the washington, d.c. area with “turn up”. the groove is clearly go-go music flavored with the trademark sound of cowbells and of course it reminds us of zapp by the use of the talk box on lead vocals, performed here by saad el garrab. and don t miss out shaun martin (snarky puppy, erykah badu, kirk franklin amongst others) as a very special guest performing the talk box solo! second stop is “a curse, a blessing”. it’s an instrumental very much in the freddie hubbard vein during his cti years. the last leg of the a side ends with an instrumental interlude titled “flying donut”. double tribute to jay dee and flying lotus, the music is a simple hip hop loop based on samples. the b side takes us back into the past with two brilliant covers, involving rod temperton the late great british songwriter who scored some of michael jackson s biggest hits. now the idea for this b side is to do the opposite approach from the a side. taking 70 s and 80 s original music and make them travel into time to 2018. we first land with a heatwave song named “the star of a story” from their 1976 central heating album. track 2 is a herbie hancock song named “gettin to the good part” from his 1982 lite me up lp. this time traveler ep journey ends with an interlude. called “gimme dat”, the song deals with the need of new music, new sound. again, this blend of deep rooted funk laced with a contemporary edge is to be consumed without moderation. and do not forget that e.p. also stands for extended pleasure.

following her 1959 appearance in the anti-apartheid film come back, africa south african native miriam makeba vaulted into the international spotlight, fell under the tutelage of harry belafonte, and moved to new york city in 1960 where she immediately became a massive recording sensation. this lp collects some of that brilliant early material that launched her career and made her one of the most beloved voices of the 20th century. all tracks recorded 1957 - 1962.

fragrant harbour once again dig out a cult gem from the seemingly endless vaults of 90s dance music, picking up on a rare and precious gem from a seminal laurent garnier mix and giving it the remaster and reissue it deserves. the artists responsible, broccoli brothers vs righteous men, hailed from germany and were trying to emulate mike dunn. -catch it (calm manoeuvre)- is a spaced out deep house track with all the gritty impact of a classic jam, while -catch it (jam)- gets decidedly rowdy with its hefty kick, jacked up swing and wonky bassline. on the b side -ruhrschnellweg (last exit stahlhausen mix)- brings a little detroit flavour into the mix with spectacular, uplifting results.

it s been a little while since we last heard from donnell knox, but he s back in action finally on his regular haunt sonic mind with some of that evergreen us techno tackle that he s forged a long and winding career out of. -no time- is steeped in the smoky pads of the motor city, with a rugged rhythm section and errant bleeps thrown in to seal the deal. -rat race- takes things in a more housey direction, but there s still a certain mysticism that reaches beyond the average club banger. -sick mind- continues the theme, but ties more knots in the programming to make for another essential slice of techno, and then -repetition- finishes the job with a razor sharp slice of sky-scraping hardware science.

future retro have selected four of the finest future thinking drum & bass artists that are around right now to bring us the “future sounds ep”. villem & mcleod kick things off with the deep rolling vibe of “burners”. next up the super soulful duo roygreen & protone are joined by robbe to bring us jazz infused “arbitrary”. macca goes solo and effortlessly rolls out the hands in the air most uplifting “what you need”, which is exactly what you do need on a great night out. rounding off the ep nicely, phase delves deep into his subconsious and gives us a little glimpse of what goes on in a produers mind with “subconsious thinking”.

the debut offering from singer mark wystrach, lead guitarist jess carson and bass player cameron duddy, collectively known as midland. midland is the embodiment of seventies california country, all smooth eagles harmonies and heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics. their songs are intoxicating country sung with the twang of george strait. and it s impossible to resist. their no. 1 hit single “drinkin’ problem” earned best country song and best country duo/group performance nominations for the grammys 2018. if there was a perfect country album which combined those traditional sounds with modern hooks for me then this is it! nat wendell launches the depth of my soul label with a confident slab of deepness that should draw plenty of heat on the peaks and troughs of the house music landscape. -the way- is a crisply produced pumper, revolving around a seductive little lead line and the haunting titular vocal hook - there s a whiff of tech in the make up of the track, but the groove is all house. -theoretics- follows down a similar path, keeping things moody and mechanical without disposing of the funk, and then it s down to -release your soul- to bring a little light into proceedings with some mellow keys and dubby flourishes.

the winelambs is a new project on troubled kids from label founder jesus gonsev and dan piu. it s an assured trip into buttery smooth deep house for those who likes things sensual, starting off with the plush tones of -falling in your arms- featuring the soulful vox of shareen. -a genuine world- is another hazy gem of a track, setting adrift on a bed of harmonious chords and achingly understated bass. -poti poti- is a spicier affair that pushes the beat to the foreground and gets a little choppier with the chords. grant focus turns in a remix of -a genuine world- that strides confidently into rock solid deep house territory once more, extending the scope of this ep while maintaining the consistent vibe.

180gr pressing , the now legendary abbey road version of “the isness” was the originally conceived version before last minute wholesale changes resulted in new tracks, different mixes and/or edits appearing in a wholly different order for the commercial release of “the isness” in 2002. the abbey road version had been initially promo’d to ecstatic reviews, receiving an unprecedented 6/5 stars from mixmag “it’s like a beam of white light from heaven”.

“yuxtaposición” is a recently unearthed treasure recorded by a tight italian trio in miami during the early seventies. until now, this music has only been heard in office backgrounds, tv commercials and movie soundtracks. but the perseverance of an admirer brought about its first-ever release on the italian schema label. imagine hearing a 1972-era cal tjader quartet without cal tjader and you get an idea of what to expect. it’s slightly latin, lightly funky and truly enjoyable. “yuxtaposición” offers enough to interest a jazz listener. but the sounds heard in these 35 minutes are really better appreciated as mood music. lead man, cabildo, composer of all ten tunes here, has a knack for writing jazzy little hooks that launch his tasty, well-crafted keyboard solos. often alternating fender rhodes and piano within the same song, his playing maintains a hypnotic command that recalls bob james’ cti style. electric bassist bobby fares and percussionist max ronnie make subtle, supportive contributions that serve only to enhance cabildo’s sound. there’s a funny thing about yuxtaposición too. it’s kind of like developing an addiction. you may not pay much attention to it at first. but before you know it, you’re hooked. you need to hear it to be satisfied. a very nice surprise.

next cocoon floor bomb! cocoon recordings is back with a bang after the winter break, cranking up the pressure once again. what s more, we re seriously pleased that we ve managed to land johannes volk for the new season. johannes has been making us smile with his productions for more than 12 years and considering his 2006 debut appeared on jeff mills axis label, it s easy to guess which direction his cocoon release is going. there are no dreamy minimal sounds or deep house trips this time round, instead you ll find headstrong techno pumping out of the speakers. tears & walls drives forward relentlessly with its meaty kick and metallic open hi-hats setting the pace. energetic and demanding throughout, johannes volk certainly takes no prisoners! -a little story about time and space- follows in its footsteps although the mood here is notably more detroit, taking us back to productions on cult labels like red planet, metroplex or the axis records sound. volk layers the track with more prominent harmonies and hypnotic arpeggios, giving it a subtle yet highly effective trance touch. the warm analog strings in the middle section underline this emotional impact and make a little story about time and space a guaranteed sunrise song for the upcoming spring and summer season, heartwarming and dance floor friendly in equal measures!

björk has released two remixes of the track ‘blissing me’, from the current album ‘utopia’, one which strips back the existing layers of song to purely her voice and a harp arrangement by herself, and another by the enigmatic artist serpentwithfeet who has gifted his heavenly gospel tones to the track.

the first full artist ep of 2018 is one by a new artist for heist, but a familiar name for any modern day house aficionado: adryiano. after taking 2016 off, he came back guns blazing in 2017, releasing 5 solo eps in 1 year on labels like shall not fade and baka gaijin. his me and you and her ep for heist showcases his contemporary view on classic house and acid, and is an experiment into how much distortion a track can actually handle when youve got a killer sample hook. me and you and her is about as classic as a house track can be and moves in similar fashion as his post-2013 hit ‘on my side. its got a sweet and repetitive vocal loop, some semi-grainy but definitely groovy percussion and a deceptively simple piano hook. add some filtering and youve got a lovely warm house song that can go on forever. the a2 move it, move it moves straight into old-school chicago territory, with a raw af acid bassline. chicago bred jamie 3:26, now residing in its dutch counterpart rotterdam, gives the track a nice old school twist. hes going full 707 on the percussion and has casually added an amazing synth hook to give the remix a true vibe of its own. the ep closes off with fashion country girl: adryianos dystopian view of a world where dolly parton gets mangled through an overdrive, then gets distorted, crushed, mangled, deleted, re-added in 8 bit and then crushed some more. the result is an uptempo roller with more than enough grit, and just enough tongue-in-cheek to make everyone smile a little bit more. yours sincerely, maarten & lars.

producer victor “ticklah” axelrod is back with another supple reggae delight. after the success of the inversions last collaboration with bob & gene, axelrod once again takes a seat in the producer’s chair, this time with a tune a little deeper in the catalogue. originally tweezed from the beautiful mo do tape boondoggle, back in ‘05 - ‘06, this single has been a long-time favorite of the daptone family.

we had a little pause on our release schedule, but without further delay we present with pleasure the next bomb by our good friend, dj spider! thema 46 was hatched from someone so deeply ingrained in the underground that he barely needs an introduction. from his ra label of the month featured imprint plan b recordings, to his thoroughly played productions on labels such as rekids, killekill and the trilogy tapes, dj spider has been a mainstay on the murkiest, most disorderly dance floors for years. his sound is characterized by disjointed elements lurching around in a off-kilter yet magnetic way that forces you to move in ways you didn t know you could. from the hell scorched, pitch bent echoes of the final revolution to the lo-fi groove antics of distress signal, dj spider proves once again that no one can do it as perfectly weird as he can. text by: nathan levenson

rebolledo’s you and your hippie friends imprint grows its groove footprint on international dance floors with the full-length debut of gÜero, the latest vinyl outing from the hippie dance sister label and also its first fully fledged album project. to attentive hippie friends, the artist name should ring a big, funky bell – one that sounds exactly like the cut “convertible ride” from the notorious “a very nice combinado volume uno” 12” release (yayhf 01). back then, our hero was travelling under the somewhat more convoluted “el güero fresa” monicker, but has since dropped some of those conceptual pounds in an effort to reach maximum sleekness. in the same vein, his debut album is a testament to ultimate funk-a-ficiency, digging deep into fizzy arpeggios and chunky basslines - and the occasional guitar cameo, giving tracks such as bubbling synth opener elektronique, the neon-lit night cruising, bouncing electro disco roller alto final or the programmatic space drifter just that little extra riff.
