it is a great album! it sounds like he had passed through my lessons. (tony allen) although i did not think deeply about it but i felt that a certain time had come for me and i decided to produce my solo album. it was 20 years since i first started playing drums and since then, out of all the brilliant artists who live in japan that i played with, i wanted to freely enlist players who i really wanted to create music with. the initial catalyst was my strong yearning, wanting to know, what sort of creativity would result, if i produced my own album.

samuel rohrer, the multi-faceted, forward-thinking percussio- nist and producer behind the arjunamusic label, the ambiq trio and a wealth of other musical projects, has set out on his own with a new full-length solo album range of regularity as a double ep set with a deceptive title if ever there was one: the sonic experience of this record is, in fact, a highly irregular one (and a highly welcome one at that). constructed almost entirely upon electronically-treated recordings of acoustic in- strumentation, with a bare minimum of synthesizer voicing, ror vibrates with a compelling organicism as if old-growth black forest trees had conspired together to make an album of ultra-modern improvisational music. indeed, the record feels limned with contributions from some other intelligence, despite being a clear extension of the fluid, percussion-driven musical technique that rohrer has exhibited in previous years.

at the end of august, sound artists and producers drvg cvltvre, strict nurse, staplerfahrer and pim kersten examined the audio capabilities of a huge steel art structure. in a 5 hour session they scraped, pushed, hit, wiped, connected and kissed the steel rings. everything was recorded and these three tracks are the results of those sessions. they were recorded live in park 013, where the iconostase was housed and which adds a sea of dark reverb to the sounds of the steel rings

a good place to start. her basic sound and image were interior-life bohemian, and in some ways she was cagey with her talent. she didnt belt or improvise broadly. she picked a limited range of notes and climbed into them, applying a pinch of vibrato, letting her voice fade and crackle. these tracks clearly demonstrate her guiding desire, which was to explore the possibilities of the slow blues in the late 20th century, whatever that might mean. some of the most intense recordings she made were english-language covers or japanese rewrites of american jazz standards, blues songs and spirituals, backed by only acoustic guitar and drums. she sang slowly, as if there were weights on her. and after a while of her working and your listening, youll hear it: the way she connects intimately with her task but keeps something private for herself (new york times)

hot casa records present togo soul 70 (selected rare togolese recordings from 1971 to 1981). a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings mostly recorded in lom� during the 70Õs, a fusion of traditional voodoo chants, raw soul and afro jazz. hot casa records selected 13 tracks, a snapshot of some hundreds of rare and often forgotten tapes from the most prolific, professional and exciting phase of the countryÕs recording history, including international stars like bella bellow (who even performed to maracana stadium in brazil), or roger damawuzan, compared as the james brown from lom�, and forgotten tapes and brilliant songs in mina, kabyi� and fon languages. many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in togo was at the time, even if the political context influenced their creation.

the korvids are a catholic glasgow collective, spearheaded by singer-songwriter james grant and gordy goudie. they marry a love of disco with the influence of deodato, axelrod, csny, miles and anything else that takes their fancy. the debut single from the korvids -beach coma- was released in 2015 and its summertime groove is a well known track on the us sirius fm networks.

it was fitting that brazilian-born, austria-based artist joyce muniz broke through in an era characterised by the cross-pollination and globalisation of music. initially combining the sounds and rhythms of her home country with contemporary european electronic sounds, she later morphed into a house / techno producer of the highest calibre. along the way she worked with the likes of maya jane coles and viennese legends kruder & dorfmeister and released on influential imprints like 2020 vision and shir khanÕs exploited. itÕs the latter which has been her main platform for releasing music since 2011 and where she now unleashes her full-length debut album, made in vienna.

in times where a compilation of 12-inch bangers passes as an album, telephones Òvibe telemetryÓ opts for a different approach. without being a departure from his 12Ós for sex tags ufo, full pupp and yours truly or his brilliant remix work for jos� padilla and vangelis katsoulis, the norwegian producer from bergen who calls berlin his home, hones sound, skills and aesthetics on his debut long-player. Òvibe telemetryÓ is inspired by the pure feeling of listening to house, disco and techno, prior to knowing what it actually was: ambiguous, euphoric, mystical and melancholic. sonic and physical experiences, which names and origins were yet to be discovered.

cd jewel case remastered by manuel g�ttsching and released on his own label mg art. inventions for electric guitar is manuel g�ttschings first solo album, recorded: july-august 1974. the album was written and performed entirely by g�ttsching on electric guitar, hence the title. manuel played his guitar and used a 4 track teac a3340, revox a77 for echoes, wahwah pedal, volume pedal, schaller rotosound and hawaiian steel bar.

amazing sounds from this great accordeon player from cabo verde! lp gatefold with liner notes in 1997, a quiet, unassuming man of 59 years old named victor tavares better know as bitori walks into a studio for the very first time to record a masterpiece which many cabo verdean consider to be the best funan� album ever made. bitori s musical adventure had begun long before this point. it was 1954 when he embarked on a journey across the seas to the island of sao tom� & principe. the young mans hope was to return to cabo verde with an accordion.

five years after his last album release luke slater returns to ostgut ton with a new planetary assault systems longplayer, titled arc angel. after 22 light-years luke slaterÕs planetary assault systems keeps exploring space and time with different musical means. staying true to the projectÕs initial mission statement, slater comments on the new yet familiar musical direction: Òfor me music has to go forward. iÕd feel i was cheating by sticking to tried and tested formulas. thereÕs a valid use for these, but this album has its own agenda.Ó with arc angel, planetary assault systems departs to new musical frontiers by focussing on melody, but staying rooted in the purist values of techno that slater shaped over his decades- and generations-spanning career.

a collaboration between aphex twin (richard d. james) and µÐziq (mike paradinas), mike & rich - Õexpert knob twiddlersÕ was made back in 1994. richard edited the tracks into shape later in 1996 with his new apple mac computer and it was released later that year on rephlex, the label he co-owned and which released the first two albums by µ-ziq. this new reissued version has been carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original dat tapes, put into a more fitting order and, more excitingly, seven new bonus tracks and alternative versions have also been added. the album was recorded over a few days during the 1994 world cup, back when richard lived in a big shared flat in stoke newington. richard had tried to collaborate with a few other likeminded artists but something clicked when mike and rich worked together and the sessions have a unique feel, playful and at times actually drunk. these are fun experiments in the spirit of lighthearted moog pop and ripe 70s british tv themes, standing out from the po-faced electronica of the time with a garish glee. the record was made on what is now seen as pretty primitive gear - an atari, roland mks-80, memorymoog, roland r8 and a handful of samples on a casio fz-10m - but itÕs to their credit that it resonates well with the hardware workouts coming out today. there s a broadminded but sloppy funk to the record, even whistling, singing and harpsichord in reg and wonky beat pile-ons in jelly fish . there s latin piano and wheezy drunken techno in ÔvodkaÕ, or the sleepy spaced out ambience of Ôbu bu bu ba with its barely contained laughter which seems to reflect the absurdity. the new versions and bonus tracks are an absolute delight - from a trancier version of Ôvodka to the wonky bounce of Ôportamento gosh , the 3/4 dub of waltz, the banging door bass of brivert and muonds , the creepy seasick atmosphere of clissold bathroom and finishing with the strangely graceful and serious organ plodder . a generous and welcome return to the racks

for the past seven years kornel kovacs has been busy rocking dancefloors and boomboxes worldwide as one third of stockholms studio barnhus alongside axel boman and petter nordkvist. the label and dj trio is spearheading a new era of fearless swedish off-centre dance music, straddling the line between the cute and the menacing. anticipation for kovacs debut album has been rocketing following stand out releases like 2014s wistful szikra, last years mad party anthem pantalon on glasgows numbers imprint and the late night groove of space jam on smallville records. on the bells, kovacs pops open his trunk full of sounds nicked from the lost and found bins of nightclubs all over the world. from the distorted organ chords of bb to the stripped down trancehall beats of joseys tune and sziv utca and the title tracks cinematic romanticism, its all of the bells and all of the whistles - further positioning kornel kovacs as one of the most characteristic producers of modern house music. the record was completed in an intense two-week session with kovacs great friend and great studio engineer matt karmil in the cold winter of 2016. another close friend, artist malin gabriella nordin, has created the album artwork together with her brother jonas.

two years ago i played at studio 9 in vilnius, lithuania. the following day i missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend linus, who took me to the contemporary art centre. it was there i spotted a book named ÔrojusÕ, that linus told me translated as ÔparadiseÕ. the word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. a few days after returning home, i turned on to a national geographic documentary named Ôdesigned to danceÕ, explaining the courtship rituals of birds of paradise. as i watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birdsÕ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. this gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these birds of paradise and their habitat. thus, rojus. leon vynehall 2016
