2 sim is a phrase the references mobile phones with two sim cards to describe people of mixed heritage, dual nationality or multiple residence. after being called 2 sim in conversation with a stranger while on a walk through freetown (a recording of this moment features on the record) duval began to explore what the 2 sim experience is in contemporary west-africa. 2 sim ep was created from 2 months of field recordings and interviews with family, friends and peers in freetown sierra leone. these site specific recordings are collaged with solo piano recordings and production recorded in sierra leone and the uk. the ep is accompanied by a short film/ music video of the same name which duval shot and directed whilst making the record. 2 sim ep is the second release from carrying colour which follows on from 2017 s sen am -

in the late 80s i started listening to uk radio stations when i was a little kid and i instantly fell in love with the acid sound and rave movement that was portrayed on those uk dance shows. when i got old enough to attend clubs and warehouse raves, to experience the movement first hand, it was a nobrainer for me that the music and the lifestyle was my call. lately…. in my dj sets and when producing music… i have been time travelling back to those days. back to how i remember the music i fell so deeply in love with and that is exactly what you hear on this “done/undone” release. for the “done” track i teamed up with cari golden to have a female spoken word and a great message to build the music around. i always prefer to do original vocal recordings rather than using samples. cari understood 100% what i was after and i love the lyrics and execution by her. the spoken word is centered, very clear and deep to contrast the constantly building intensity of the acid patterns and thumping beats. “undone” is instrumental and has a more straight forward flow to it. it’s quite simple although the shifting groove patterns might surprise some. i was torn between two different acid patterns and decided to drop one of them as a surprise change. playing the track in clubs i quickly learned that the change of dynamics had a great effect. both tracks have been wrapped in dark-themed chords and atmosphere. both tracks have my take on the sound i fell in love with years ago and obviously still love today. i hope you like what you hear.

deru aka benjamin wynn is an emmy award winning american composer and music producer. deru’s last record, 1979, dealt with individual human emotions. his new project, torn in two, zooms out and deals with human existence as a whole. it finds feelings of frustration, dissociation and anger, but from a high vantage that affords perspective and allows the project to include acceptance, beauty and tranquility. torn in two is set for release on october 19th via friends of friends (anenon, shlohmo, perera elsewhere). the music lives in evolving landscapes of violence and beauty, with compositions that shape-shift, flutter, and decimate one s sense of time and place. the album is a collection of microtonal pieces where the pitches were derived from acoustic instruments, and processed woodwind and brass recordings. both represented new directions for wynn, and the results are pieces that are more dynamic and full-spectrum than his previous body of work. they explode into walls of distortion and recede into quiet acoustics.

the sound recordings for jimi tenors sähkö movie got lost in mid 90s. it was only last spring warp records retrurned all the demo tapes jimi sent them in 90s. happily the sähkö soundtrack parts were on those tapes too. we decided to compile a soundtrack ep from them for mika vainios memorial in oslo in september 2018. all the tracks are from the actual movie scenes.

korpus 9 records kicks off with a brand new ep from dubspeeka, featuring four tracks of high impact and atmospheric techno. korpus 9 records is a brand new techno label from russia managed by kwazalski. the main aim of the label is to release fresh and innovative material, not only digitally, but also on vinyl. all the imagery and influences of the label come from an abandoned research station that is deep underwater, where unusual events are happening around it on a constant basis. charged with the first release is shadowy bristolian producer dubspeeka, who has put out his music on drumcode, senso sounds and get physical, runs skeleton recordings and has a fierce techno sound. the opener here is garrison, a driving number with heavy drums and a warm but edgy mood. garrison 2 is more spaced out, with celestial pads baring a feeling of suspense above the firmly rooted drums. garrison 3 then has lumpy drums that bob up and down, as acid lines, water sounds and metallic hits all add atmosphere to the cavernous groove. last of all, garrison 4 is an eerie dub techno track with real drive but also plenty of thoughtful emotions. it closes out a brilliant first ep on this exciting new label.

french producer lb aka labat returns with a new lp named “fake memories” on his own label alélah records. he surprises us with some more hip-hop and r’n’b music, liberating his love for jazz rythms and harmonics. known for his talent at playing with samples, this new lp expresses his actual potential, offering a large use of instrumental stuff : violin and piano chords, guitar riffs… together with delicate voices that balance with the old school drums and procure gentleness to the sharp hats. the b3 eponymous track even discloses the man’s voice, with lyrics sang by himself
