it has been a while since jaxson & david keno have been on keno records but it was worth the wait. calippo is an absolute banger. driven by this oldschool deep bassline climaxing in a breakdown filled with detroit strings this track already rocked many dancefloors all over the world. oliver schories takes it down a notch, gets rid of the strings and takes it into a more melancholic direction but still very danceable. the remix from adrian martin pushes calippo even a bit more in the tech house direction.

at some point in 2013, friendly fires, andrew weatherall and timothy j fairplay (aka the asphodells), convened in an east london pub to discuss collaborating on new music together. the plan was to produce music that came from a place outside of their respective usual musical styles - a loose, open-ended process embarked upon for the pure joy of experimentation and collaboration rather than a specific end goal. the collaboration came on the back of two hugely successful friendly fires albums - 2008s debut friendly fires and 2011s follow up pala - and an acclaimed debut album from the asphodells in 2013s ruled by passion destroyed by lust, the latest in a long line of classic releases from andrew weatherall’s own rotters golf club label. the result is *before your eyes* and *velo* - two brand new tracks that take close to ten minutes each to reveal their full hypnotic glory. the tracks will be released as a aa-sided single on translucent, orange colored 12 inch vinyl and will be the inaugural release on friendly fires own telophase label.

andy meecham is a man of many musical incarnations and has been since the early 90s. following on from projects like the now dormant bizarre inc and revived dub-disco duo chicken lips, it is as the emperor machine that he explores his most experimental sounds. to date there have been three full length albums on dc recordings after the project was initially started with the idea of creating music using just one synth, the roland sh-3a. the results lay out the staffordshire mans love of vintage synthesisers for all to see, and combine tough edged disco beats with more cerebral cosmic melodies into alluring soundscapes that bend your mind and drive your feet. as well as a slew of 12s and lps, the emperor machine has also turned his hand to remixes of giants like moby, daft punk and royksopp, and has previously taken a live and inspiringly psychedelic incarnation of the project to clubs and festivals across the planet.

in june 2013, above & beyond performed some of their best-loved songs acoustically with a 12-piece band, across three sold out shows at londons legendary porchester hall. the response from fans was overwhelming and led to two sold-out nights at the greek theater in los angeles in october, described by billboard magazine as one of the finest and more memorable shows in dance music history.

kiwanuka, a 25 year-old uk native of ugandan heritage, was raised in north london where he split his time between session work and local gigs. along the way, having found footing as a solo artist, he was signed to communion records, then polydor, and has since performed throughout europe and north america too touring in direct support of adele. he made his way through nashville this past summer with just enough pause and aplomb to commit these morsels to tape. the a-side *you ve got nothing to lose* is an original composition, featuring the buzzards dominic davis on upright bass and cory younts on piano, joined also by fellow balladeer lillie mae rische on fiddle. their contributions transform his work into a stone-cold groove with almost orchestral underpinnings, making it a fitting extension of their previous blue series. the single also features a chilling rendition of townes van zandts infamous *waitin round to die* on the b-side, the perfect compliment to the timbre and mood of the a-side.

the goal with supernova was to look back to the disco era but with a synth heavy and altogether more cosmic twist. alex is a big fun of modern russian classical music composing style. also he was inspired by early english progressive scene (yes, elo etc). this is why u-kas melodic lines are long and not so straight sometimes. and oleg is musically far from academic school and prefers zappa, early german electronic and psychedelic krautrock etc.

visibility is a trap is the new ep by dalhous, comprised of four originals together with a masterfully understated regis remix of *he was human and belonged with humans*. the ep heralds the arrival of the edinburgh-based projects sophomore album, will to be well, due out on blackest ever black in early summer 2014.

the third album of depeche mode construction time again (1983) was the first one to include talented band member and arranger alan wilder to the mix. the album was recorded in john foxx s the garden studio in london and mixed in the famous hansa tonstudio in berlin, the latter being famous for its delivery of classic albums by artists like david bowie, iggy pop, nick cave and u2. experimenting with brand new instruments like the synclavier that allowed sampling to be manipulated musically, construction time again was a groundbreaking record that included industrial influences. these influences would come to full fruition on subsequent albums some great reward movlp940 and black celebration movlp947. songs like *pipeline*, *love in itself*, *shame* and *everything counts* turned out to become classic depeche material.

with *closer* masterton debuts on blackfoxmusics 19th release (bfm019). *closer* is a warm track with a deep groove and beautiful melodies. it relates to living in a long distance relationship and overcoming a lack of proximity.
robert babicz (babiczstyle, systematic, bedrock records) created an incredible remix. he used lots of the original melodies, combined them with new elements, added rolling drums and a thick bassline to give the track the extra drive. his remix became a constant part of his live sets and was debuted with great response at grelle forelle (vienna) and ritter butzke (berlin).
channel x (stil vor talent) remixed *closer* into a pretty cool and clubby deep house track. you can feel their berlin origin when listening to the groovy bassline with variations of the melody. finally the breaks capture the mood of the dissonant sounds from the original track.

strut teams up once again with rodion rosça, romanias rejuvenated electronic music pioneer, to make available an intriguing lost film soundtrack for the first time anywhere. inspired by early 80s star wars mania‚ victor antonescu had first created *misuinea spatiala delta (delta space mission)* as a domestic animated tv series in 1983. despite recording a 15-minute prototype score, rodions music was tragically shelved at a late stage, remaining an unreleased oddity in his archive until now.

dehnert has continued to steer his fachwerk label through the techno undergrowth and it has now amassed more than 25 releases in all. at the heart of the labels output has been dehnerts own increasingly experimental techno and this new album is testament to the producers continued exploration of the form. where framework was, in the words of mike himself, focussed on the heavy techno form, this album explores broken bass, swinging house and beatless electronic experimentalism amongst other things. i love to release music. i still enjoy the album writing process very much, says mike, before adding, i have noticed that sometimes the succe ss of a track depends on the light at club, which is why the album is called lichtbedingt, meaning depends on light! the album starts off with a suitably sombre intro that features cold, slowly shifting synths.

the sound of disco rose out of philadelphia in the 70s before being nurtured in new york and later rising to the top of the pops. by 1979 it made its way to india, where it was blended with sitars, tablas and huge orchestras in a wildly inventive, and often boldly surreal, fusion of purab aur pachhim (east and west).

stompin at the savoy – live (1983) was a major commercial success for rufus and chaka khan, reaching #4 on billboards r&b albums charts. this double-record set features three sides of live material recorded over multiple dates at the savoy theatre in new york. the band stunned packed audiences with an energetic set of old favorites and new material, such as *tell me something good*, *you got the love*, *sweet thing*, *at midnight (my love will lift you up)*, and *do you love what you feel* as well as *what cha gonna do for me* from khans 1981 solo album of the same name. the d-side includes four new studio recordings of which two were released as singles, *aint nobody* and *one million kisses*. *aint nobody* became rufus final #1 r&b hit and won them a grammy award for best r&b performance by a duo or group with vocal in 1984. the song was featured in the movie breakin and its soundtrack.

rising concern dan shake has achieved what no other has in over a decade: with his debut release in the music world, he has become the very first producer without a detroit heritage or residency to land a release on moodymanns prestigious record label mahogani music. based in london, the former leeds student secured the feat in a charmingly anachronistic fashion: having just watched kenny dixon jr perform alongside the 3 chairs at dimensions festival, dan simply handed over a demo cd with a collection of unreleased tracks. moodymann was hooked almost instantantly, taking the first plunge on welcoming an outsider into his tight-knit crew of detroit strong artists. citing influence from the layered percussive rhythms of afrobeat pioneers such as tony allen and fela kuti, the soul-drenched sampling of j dilla and the kind of dark, dense grooves laid out by contemporary producers such as flying lotus and motor city drum ensemble, dans situation in winding up on a label renowned for encompassing all those traits is obviously a blessing for the young producer.
