nice price deal !!! real name dan griober, dan habarnam has been active since the 90s, doing production for romanian pop artists while also working on his own projects. his solo catalog is pretty slim, with just a few appearances on drum & bass labels like santorin and subtle audio, but from the known is clearly the work of an experienced artist: though loosely anchored in techno, ambient and bass music, its stylistically open-ended, and produced with an audiophiles attention to detail. according to the label, groibers meticulousness extended to the mastering process as well (the cd, for instance, was recorded direct from the vinyl to achieve that special analog feel)

march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

the title track on tychos long-awaited dive lp is just that — a ripple effect record that sounds like three songs in one, as if sound/graphic designer scott hansen just discovered progrock and decided to apply its winding passages to his own singular blend of sinewy synths and bleached beats. its also the first tycho song to feature a prominent guest musician, guitarist zac brown, in this case, who paints outside the lines of hansens halcyon hooks with restless rhythms and monorail-like riffs. the >dive< single fleshes things out even further, as keep shelly in athens and memoryhouse — both rising underground artists in their own right — cut hansens cloud-scraping composition in half and slow his cruise control chords down to a crawl. the misty vocal melodies are still there, but they are now floating through an embryonic assembly of jittery cicadas, rusty gears, and lean loops that are both welcoming and a bit woozy. the sonic equivalent of staring at the sun for too long, really, or two sides of the same cracked mirror.

in 2006, hip-hop was turned on its head by the arrival of chicagos kenny dennis, a proudly married, mustachioed and middle-aged rapper repping no-nonsense lyrics and a salt-of-the-earth swagger. this unlikely hero delivered a handful of classics via the album, dennehy, and then disappeared. but in 2011, kennys cult of fans were given a gift: the long-lost 1993 lp theres a situation on the homefront from his theretofore unheard boom-bap crew tha grimm teachaz. christian smiths tronic label enjoyed a fantastic year in 2011, persistently receiving plaudits from the media, scene tastemakers and the record buying public for the labels consistently first-rate output that consisted of a genre-blurring mixture of tech house and progressive flavoured techno floor-smashing grooves. since meeting in berlin during summer of 2011, christian smith and florian meindl have stuck up a productive studio partnership. having released their first collaboration - desire - via meindls flash imprint in december, this subsequent ep for tronic sees the duo take their corporation a stage further with a two tracks of slightly left of centre yet unashamedly peak-time tech house. mothership leads off the ep with a distinctive retro-electro bassline that builds into the main hook via a series of peaks and drops before taking off into a tweaked crescendo of high-pitched tones. red alert opts for a subtler approach, creating its simple but effective groove from jacking percussion and wobbly synth stabs, which pulse throughout, morphing to distorting and echoing in the break.

bill youngman has become one of the most important parts of the killekill family. his new record displays his wide range of interests: from dark techno in shadent he crosses over to drone monster alert in wespe to his very own style of melodic electro in centrumcircuit. about bill youngman: scandinavia, tresor, null etc., bill has from day one been producing a lot of excellent other stuff. for exam- ple, he released one album of the finest electronica on depth charge’s dc recordings under the alias audible, several great eps of electro on serotonin and recently remixed jamie lidell in a rather techy dubstep style for warp. bill doesnt follow trends and dislikes being categorized into one stale genre and so perfectly fits into the killekill master plan. expect several eps from him on killekill in the future. bill will furthermore attempt to push the threshold of modern electronic music production.

the lyrics are again deeply personal and in many cases the songs speak of struggle, redemption and again, struggle. luke explains in his own words, the first record i made has a very homeless or wild-west feel to it and this new one is filled with addresses and luxuries.
