the h.a.n.s. is back. with more tools for fools. four traxx and two extras for the soft working dj and the fast moving dancer. more samples, more nasty beats, more heavy stripped down kaputt groovers. weak kick drums, lazy arrangements & shameless sampling guaranteed. food for fun? maybe rooted somewhere between the early paul jacobs and the late bcc music starring a 2014 twist if you know what i mean. you better remember that h-ouse a-int n-othing s-erious. it is still nothing but big fun.

the km editions series, admirably helmed by the mysterious keyboard masher, has always been one of the more interesting re-edit/rework labels. past installments have touched on krautrock, disco, balearica, funk, italo and what can only be described as electronic oddities. this sixth volume offers up three more impressively remixed, overdubbed and reedited gems. theres naturally much to admire, not least the omd style woozy synth-pop of stolen shapes (stealing rework), which should tickle the fancy of anyone of a balearic disposition. the same can be said about the immersive, sun-kissed pianos and shuffling grooves of -astral playground. there s also a chunk of silly but, perversely, rather good french cod-reggae in the shape of le cod-, arguably our pick of a strong bunch.

albert van abbe has truly gained momentum this year with his new self-titled label vanabbe, a successful berghain live debut as well as releases on shipwrec and now trolldans. and you can tell! this trolldans release is filled with confidence and lucidity. the term ostinato refers to a continuously repeated musical pattern. its usually used in reference to classical music, but is well suited here. this ostinato, this stubbornness, gives the music a sense of pace and propulsion.

in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are…

we dont question the relevance of techno in the current musical landscape, but look back ten years or so and youll figure things were a little stagnant and uninspiring. the techno scene in berlin certainly did a lot to spruce new life in the genre and people like merbeck with his vault series releases were somehow pioneers of the industrial-influenced sound we now celebrate and take for granted. now landing on m_rec ltd. with a 3 track ep, the berlin resident fuses his aggressive sound with the hypnotic, dark-room elements that have defined the labels vision. m_rec ltd. starts 2015 with a nasty release: three tracks that fit any moment of a proper techno set.

christian viers is fast becoming a prominent name on uk underground house and techno circuits, either as part of lazlo dancehall alongside leon vynehall or his long running a1 bassline project. techno-focused releases on his own label, source unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed fina white resulting in the bad timing ep, which the label state is a strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction they plan to take moving forward. title track bad timing is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. without time is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst uk house veteran nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

ben sims presents the final (but first!) in his long-running theory series. over the years theory has presented us with some of the most essential house & techno releases on offer. sims unleashes four forward forward-thinking techno cuts for 050.1, headed up by a smoking remix from the bold marcel dettmann.

dj haus goes a little freaky on the helta skelta ep. this 4 track ep show his strangely funky side with some odd and jerky rhythms and melodies. it takes its cues from the windy city but doesnt hide dj haus roots in the uk with a bleepy techno twist and pirate radio energy.

informa experiments volume 2 continues with the same concept as the last, 4 artists submit a bank of sounds and from these sounds each artist composes a track. a simple idea that proves very effective. this time the contributors are claudio prc (prologue), takaaki itoh (wols), ben gibson (chronicle) & deepbass (informa) each version has come out very different but all have a beautifully analogous feel. deep, pulsing hypnotic techno. the release will be available on 12 inch only.

for a brief moment turin was italys sheffield, producing an astonishing number of diy electronic groups. in the context of a wider europe, italy has never been thought of as a hotbed of minimal electronic music, but mannequin records compilations danza meccanica: italian synth wave 1982-1987 have shone a light on a scene little heard, even within italys borders. but the history was still incomplete ... some new horizons now must be unveiled, showing that between the years of 1982 and 1984, the city of turin in northwest italy was home to a quiet underground renaissance of experimental electronic music.

polluted system is a track suitable for the main room, the energy of the kick and the bass leave no respite from start to finish as a joint of metal percussion and synths fit gradually to fill the sound spectrum of this track. becomes human machine in a few minutes, using acid and industrial sounds, conveys the idea of the change that is happening around us: people are becoming more and more machines, and this is the soundtrack of the mutation. unlocked human, while remaining in acid and mechanical territories, thanks to a groove of more organic toms and hi hat still let the human element glimpse, not yet deleted by the machines, all accompanied by a relentless kick which makes it a perfect tool from the dancefloor . no system, which give the title to the ep, ends this sequence with dreamy and futuristic atmospheres, the ruling part is still a simple but instantly recognizable acid bass, over breakbeat-oriented rhythmics.

born in the distinctively puerto rican neighborhood of lincoln park chicago, ricardo was named after legendary salsa singer ricardo ray. after major puerto rican displacement (urban renewal) ricardos parents settled in the noble square section of west town for many years. his music reflects a traditional house culture that goes beyond just sound or legendary stories. while his industry peers recite fond memories of the music box, the bismark and other musical institutions – ricardo sat in front of a big pioneer radio listening & recording mixes from chicago radio stations wrrg, wbmx am/fm & wgci which included a hefty dose of early house music, italian imports and electro. but, it was the new sound of chicago house that made a profound impact on his soul.

land of confusion is one of the most seminal chicago acid house records. originally released in 1987 on bam bam s westbrook imprint and produced by the legendary armando gallop it marked the start of a recording career that would make him a household name among house and techno aficionados. to say land of confusion is raw is an understatement, it consists of a handful of elements but its impact when played is incendiary. armandos tb-303 acid lines sound possessed and unruly while the primitive drum machine patterns stagger around the track giving it a feeling of out of control urgency, a truly lo-fi piece of crazy chicago acid that was popular with many djs in chicago(including ron hardy at the muzic box) and around the world and continues to be influential today. an essential record for any discerning house or techno fan.

for the latest edition of the intriguing dessert islands discs re-edit series, the label has called upon the well-renowned scalpel talents of german-in-amsterdam marcel vogel, aka em vee. the double denim-sporting eccentric drops another gem in the shape of *white heat shake it out (edit)*, a bouncy and seductive disco chop-job that makes great use of the source materials bustling groove and steamy, spoken word vocals. on the flip, lesser-known re-edit heads papi del pancake and claude von reefer take up the challenge. their *gimme what you got* has a little more deep house shuffle, but retains the key instrumentation and feel of a sumptuous disco-soul jam.

with the bizarre feeling ep laying the sound for the subsequent fist year of the label, it is right jamie returns with ep#2 to move things forward with another twisted take on his unique mutoid-protoid-machine-funk-groove. starting with mad obsession you would be forgiven for thinking you ll have bizarre feeling part 2, with warped vocals - taken from late night, half asleep scribbled notes - and space echo haze, but let the percussion work-out trip you up and the stars in and before you know it things start going leftfild and then deeper with the free party sound system bass line shuffl of time nearly time. what he is on (about), no one knows. it is on the flp however that things take a darker turn. beyond the confession booth, down sharp stairs and dripping ceiling to a red light lit room of latter day late night blues.

after many uk based producers, its time again for some homeboys. elvis is a young dj and producer from zurich/switzerland and his humney ep is his first full release to date.humney is that catchy house tune with a touch of the 90s house sound, with a great bass line, sexy vocals (from the lovely choklate) and solid beats. the up and coming palace (hot haus records) adds a rougher vibe with his remix, but its still humney. the way is taking a deeper direction and shows that elvis cassetta is definitely a name to watch out for!

the occasional (but always excellent) street edits series returns, this time with a trio of high-grade scalpel works from chicago re-edit hero rahaan. as usual, the source material is dusty and obscure, and the reworks revelatory. -city of disco- is in many ways typical of rahaan s work, with carefully cuts and loops being used to create a thumping, house style groove (admittedly one that pays due reverence to the source material). there s more of a celebratory, soulful feel about the impeccable -strung out-, which turns a little-known disco-soul gem into a huggable dancefloor classic. best of all, though, is -brighten you up-, which sits somewhere between later electrofunk and early house, a proto-proto gem, perhaps. either way, it s a killer.

spatial has always been more exploratory than your average stepper, but with his audiovisual (or opti-sonic as he puts it) project primitives, every aspect of his output blooms outward with android rigour.

the much loved, slightly mysterious but always firing r-zone series rolls on to its 12th release here. this time the dutch collective serves up five searing club tracks that are as raw and energetic as ever and look back to a 90s uk heyday for their inspiration. first up is beginning of life, with old school loon bird calls, lots of rave intentions and nebulous pads all creating a sweaty atmosphere atop rough hewn drums.

what $ love is one of romanthony s rarest songs. these original house mixes are one of his most sought after pieces of vinyl with pristine copies selling for upwards of £100. roman did make an r&b version on his glasgow underground album but the house mixes with their low slung dubby organ & bass grooves are the real dj deal with the westside highway mix still in many a list house djs bags.

it s been some months since the last gold release but only david phillips two bangers doogiehouser and daaance daance had the golden touch to deserve the expensive metal. and being played by gold rcrds boss rainer weichhold for a long time he knew exactely how to make his own version together with greek kling klong artist vangelis kostoxenakis. as enzo siffredi s last keno records release became such a big track in rainer s dj set he was very glad that enzo agreed for his remix of doogiehouser . beware of the doogie.

the fruit of b4ck6roundno1se has ripened despite the fact the the tree is in a demotivating country without sunshine in a fucking closed garden. the tree has been sprayed by a lot of jealous and hostile arseholes but its roots are strong. let this record and the whole self-made label motivation to all those, as well, always searching for excuses.

legworks 2nd single comes from another one of our texas compatriates, the indelible brett johnson, fresh off some amazing work on classic, get physical, rawax and other killer imprints. the mission harks back to some of our favourite dub-techno moments, but keeps its own flare with bretts signature robo-rhythms and chopped and screwed vocal cuts. on the remix tip, its label head lance desardi & convextion bringing their own flavour to the table respectively, with lance stepping to the chord memory, deep bass, and over sampled drums, and convextion going all the way out into hyper space with his usual sub-aquatic space funk.

roots for bloom hits its tenth release and welcomes carlos sanchez & alex kaddour to the label. this ep is made for the floor, its no nonsense, groove based house music at its best. tough basslines drive the a side black freddie s moustache and echoey vocals stab through. on the flip the basslines remain at the forefront of your attention, but this time layered alongside more mysterious synth lines and twisted vocals. with previous releases on the likes of 8bit and poker flat its easy to see why these guys will fit right in at the roots for bloom camp.

do you feel the same by hercules &love affair is easily one of the biggest dancefloor tracks of 2014, the powerful vocal and catchiness made it an anthem in its own right. now with re-works from one of the most celebrated figures in dance music todd terry and talented duo 6th borough project the record has been taken in different, but equally dynami,c directions. todd terrys remix keeps the uplifting dance quality of the track whilst adding his signature style of house that was instrumental in creating the deep/progressive house we listen to today. the dub takes the focus away from the vocal and has more of an underground and tech sound. 6thborough project often explore long forgotten funk and disco dubs, and with their remix of the track they manage to keep the disco sound of hercules &love affairs original track, even with the bpms dropped down to something far more mellow than the original.

danse club 16th release welcomes greek producer, sek also of ama, morris audio, large. the release kicks off with everybody, a bumping and groove filled slice of deep house that employs a simple bass, a filtered piano chord groove and sparse vocal hits. next up is no matter what, a driving, garage influenced record which is sure to send dance floors crazy. last but not least the b2, sofa king high. a laid back, deep, sleezy house record with distorted chords, smooth bass and addictive vocals.

johannes heil and markus suckut team up for the new cocoon release and what they came up with is simply amazing! a techno monster! the two high profile producers seem to merge various techno influences out of the last 15 years here but they manage it to do this with their very own hand writing. the opening track intuition appears like robert hood and speedy j helped out triggering the right sounds in the studio.

few djs and producers have credentials quite like sammy dees. a longtime fixtureof berlins club scene, a cornerstone of the esteemed perlon imprint and a regular djand panorama bar and club der visionaere, his taste and signature style couldhardly be more well-­&#8208,,,,,honed. earlier this year, he created a new platform for hisunique take on house and techno: ultrastretch, a label that hit the ground runningwith a 12-­&#8208,,,,,inch by matthew burton. slick, modern and touched with surrealism, therecord had all of the unique flavor one would expect from a label by sammy, provinghis skills as a selector extend well beyond the dj booth. ultrastretchs second release lives up to the same high standard. much like matthew burton, seuil is a highly imaginative producer whos kept a low profile despite astring of excellent records. based in paris, his lean and funky sound has placed himat the forefront of his citys reemerging party scene. many of his past releases havebeen punchy but subtle, balancing dance floor utility with an ear for restraint. on >oamer< he goes even deeper than usual, crafting a vivid afterhours track out ofhypnotic drums and bleary-­&#8208,,,,,eyed chords—nervous one moment, euphoric the next.like its title suggests, >dark rooms< is a clubbier affair, charging ahead withfragmented vocals and a brisk driving rhythm. this is one to put on as the nightturns serious. for the final track, sammy brings in an old friend: baby ford, one of germanys finest purveyors of skeletal, ultra-­&#8208,,,,,deep electronics. his remix of >oamer< expands on the originals dreamy side, with sanguine chords and abstract imagerylayered over a crisp bass drum. aimed at the dj and the connoisseur, oamer is one of the classiest records of the year so far, from one of its finest new labels.

nabla is a mathematical function that when applied, gives a multi-dimensional figure the ability to have many slopes in different directions. like the label’s name, the artists’ of nabla interest in all genres and textures will reflect in the varied nature of their future releases. for its first release, nabla artist lakehead continues the well-trodden path between techno and sci-fi but with a more eerie waif-like approach. raw lo-fi influences impose themselves through interesting percussive mechanics and ghost-like synths in a1. the ambient weightlessness of a2 gives way to a greater intensity on the b-side. the offbeat delivery on b1 is guided along industrial sounding landscapes while heavy metal hi-hats and trance-like melody of b2 rounds off a versatile first release

first release of the new label run by dj soch aka marco socci and it starts with a bang! dj soch is one of the resident djs at the serendipity club, after the positive experience of mind your hate records he feels the need to have a platform for his rougher sound. -coney island- honors the true house sound of chicago, but with that modern twist to move any dancefloor. the analog cops rendition takes all the key elements of the orignal and brings everything to another level creating a new wild pitch sound. -funky dry- is the most functional track here. it s a great funky techno tune perfect for the peak time of the night. black angus records is only vinyl don t miss it!

known as pantaleon perez prado, was the younger brother of the famous king of mambo. pantaleon, who came to europe in the 1950s, recorded several albums with unifunk. a powerful big funk band sound featuring: tullio de piscopo, mario rusca, giancarlo barigozzi, pino prestipino and others. escandalo!, as perez prado states in the brief sleeve note, is named after a new rhythm created by himself. *a rhythm you can dance to in freedom, without specific steps*. in spite of this naive launching, the opening track chicago banana is a declaration of intent, with its sly stone-esque groove. 9 out of 12 tracks are originals credited to composers of the unifunk circle, but the track list is careful to preserve prados well-established latin appeal, by including three standards such as brazil, el manisero and tequila.

the second release of inkblots involves three great artists deeply active into the international techno scene: the japanese go hiyama and the berlin based duo i/y. on side a, go hiyama’s first track ‘recur’ delivers sinister atmospheres matched with a tough kick and industrial bleepy elements. slow and paranoic drones get in and out contributing to enlarge the sound perception. the second track ‘prop’ introduces elegant hi-hats and strident synths. a captivating kick perfectly embraces the shrill synths waving together with the sharp drum, what remains of the first side is just tense ambients, forewarning the journey is not over. side b smells like a dark club firing up, indeed i/y’s aim is not different at all. ’thesys 0000.001’ debuts with a thin bassline and distorted grave surroundings. the track evolves with clean slap hats sound in an empty echo chamber. deep timbres rise and fall, turning the entire route gently aggressive. the second track is an idm experiment which keeps a trippy approach and the clarity of claps and hi-hats. solid as the first one, ‘thesys 0000.003’ sets itself as an hypnotic but pleasant moment where suspicious fragments quickly appear and disappear: a sparkled trip to be enjoyed anytime but not by anyone.
