having pinned to perfection the sonics of the adriatic, croatias love international festival bottles up their blissed out rhythms and sunrise sessions for the inauguration of love international recordings, fittingly, with a first release from uk producer begin. bringing the love international feel to wax and digital, the label will encapsulate the range of music the festival’s secluded party paradise has become renowned for. all the way from the balearic tinges of this first release, to the meatier house, techno and electro selections on show at barbarellas. begin aka james holroyd has a long history with love international. dating back to the early 2000s, holroyd was one of the first guest djs at the old garden festival on the former festival site in petrcane. long serving chemical brothers tour dj, back to basics resident since the 90s and bugged out co founder, begin has long paid his paid his dues to the scene. in the words of dave harvey: hes been an absolute workhorse in dance music for time. love international 001s tracks seemingly fit the festivals own daily lifecycle. from the docile guitar picking of meditative ep opener wood trees to the slow daybreak funk of‘daypulse where synths pierce through the track like sun rays through the adriatic dusk, the ep is a holistic reflection of what one might hear at one of the festivals fabled sunrise sessions. garden interlude ushers in a fresh burst of energy, with the revitalizing sounds of piano house, paired with warming neo soul vocals. into the fun is a self fulfilling prophecy, closing the ep on a quintessentially balearic note.

after putting out kito jempere s well received sea monsters album last year, hell yeah now serve up another selection of remixes of it. accomplished musician jimi tenor, plus miskotom and max essa all contribute before a 7inch, also taken from the album, lands later in summer. first up is jimi tenor, the legndary finnish musician who has released on warp, collaborated with tony allen and has his own band as well as occasionally playing sax with kito jempere band at live gigs. he flips puzzled into five minutes of stripped back and moody electronics with plenty of his own flute playing in the track. busted drum sounds, spooky sci-fi synths and scattered hits make it woozy and late night and utterly absorbing. miskotom—a newly emerging pair made up of mik and his wife andra, both based in vilnius, lithuania with credits on pleasure unit and balearic —then reimagine ampa as a beatdown but of deep house with trudging drums staying low and shimmering synths drift out in all directions. crunchy hits bring a subtle sense of funk and reverb drenched vocals bring a heavenly feel to the soul drenched grooves and summery keys. then comes max essa, the japan based brit who is a regular on this label as well as the likes of is it balearic?. his first remix is a huge one that is sure to soundtrack many a boat party this summer. it s a gorgeous rework of ampa that puts achingly blissful vocals front and centre as low slung bass and slowly turning drums sink you into a pan-pipe laced reverie. secondly, essa offers a dub reprise that removes the vocals and places all the focus on his churning drums and new age grooves. this is another perfect package of masterfully electronic horizontal sounds.

public release adds another entry to its 2018 chapter with a four-track ep that engineers the intersection of gentle warm-up house of the balearic genus and frosty chill-out. the 12inch is the latest from dylan khotin-foote, who goes by the mononym khotin, a producer and dj firmly planted at the epicenter of vancouver’s lively, colorful dance music scene.

sth. notional was a short-lived project that manifested in one album back in 1992, originally released on japanese label zero corporation. yawn yawn yawn focused primarily on various balearic-friendly mixes of the title track and some other scattered pieces, and now they ve received a much-needed spruce up from archeo recordings. the dream. another reality versions of yawn yawn yawn are laid back to the extreme, revolving around delicate instrumentation and occasional threads of speech and singing. there s a mellow beat behind the g-tar cannyon mix, and the thankful mix brings a weightier groove to the table. with the other tracks adding to this utterly smooth, early 90s shake, and spread across three discs, this is the holy grail reissue collectors have been waiting for.

the finnish tropical troupe maajo is back with a two-track ep. in contrast to the afro-balearic sound of their 2016 debut tropic of tulli, the new defo / mansaba ep is a step in a deeper and sometimes darker direction. defo kicks off the ep with a driving 5/4 rhythm. reminiscent of mark ernestus’ ndagga sounds, it is a tribal tune with maajo’s signature ethereal disco elements. trevor deep jr.’s version straightens out the original’s unconventional time signature and focuses on a four-to-four beat and plenty of berliner dub. the remix is a solid dancefloor tool, traversing the original like a train making its way through a dark rainforest. the b-side is entirely covered by mansaba, a 14-minute long journey into inwards. this studio jam, recorded largely live, is a wild mixture of polyrhythmic sequences, krautrock guitar licks, equatorial forest percussion and violin synths. the trip starts slow and soothing, sneakily picks up pace and keeps grow and growing, eventually exploding into a full-on tribal dance.

slow motion s 38th (!!) release comes courtesy of berlin-based gallo who you may know as part of balearic gabba soundsystem. joining the family for his debut solo release gallo drops the tempo for three deep-cuts of blissful balearica. backed up with an acidic, chugging re-rub of faron from fabrizio mammarella which is perfect when the sun goes down, orange stripe arrives just in time for summer. how to get the most of this track: combine it with blissful and dreamy beach-excursions or with a sunset aperitivo. this 38th release has -future classic- written all over it.

ilija rudman is certainly a prolific artist, regularly appearing on labels like is it balearic? and running his own imogen label to ensure he s always got an outlet for the classically informed grooves he does so well. paradigma is his third studio album, and it finds the croatian producer exploring all manner of moods both day time and nocturnal. at one moment you might be wistfully cruising down the sultry boulevards of temptations trial, only to cosy up with the comely tones of creamfields or the vibrant chords ofelastica. by and large it s a downtempo affair for private reflection, steeped in 80s glamour and produced with a crystalline perfection to add that all-important glint to your life.

giorgio gordano and giorgio dolce originally produced kkk back in 1983, and the track was taken into the hearts of the blossoming balearic scene hovering around dj alfredo at amnesia. its as gentle and sweet natured as italo disco can be, and of course it makes perfect sense that best records would dig it out of the archives and give it the shiny new reissue it deserves. the club mix of kkk is a feast of simple, charming programmed melodies and crisp drum machine rhythms with the innocence of the early 80s in its heart. the dub mix and bonus beats on the flip are handy for the technical djs out there, but the club mix is where it s at for the lovers.

xen & yovav return to malka tuti in 2018 with full thrust and eyes to the future. after being responsible for the first 2 releases on the label, this time the enigmatic singer and the influential producer collaborate and deliver 2 original songs. hayom etmol is a 100% good vibe diy post-punkish poppy song with a flowing synthetic bass line, balearic guitar riffs and dreamy vocals. the b-side, shavit, is a vocal led song, with a repetitive guitar bassline and, trip guitar riffs and a minimalistic drum machine. low fi in its production shavit feels as if it has been dug out of an abandoned 80s record store in the outskirts of glasgow or amsterdam, with a strong cold wave feel to it. this 7” will be the first in a series of more diy approach to electronic music, song writing and production. some exciting names on the bill so hold on to your chairs... hayom etmol’s artwork design was made as always by morey talmor, with a printed inner sleeve designed by the israeli artist kobi swissa and a special silkscreened outer pvc sleeve.

four tracks of ny-flavoured boogie and house goodness - quality is the key word from copenhagen based music for dreams and here is another home run. willie graff splits his year between dj residencies in new york and ibiza. in this new outing with studio partner darren eboli, the influence is, as the title suggests, clearly ny-based. over only four tracks, the pair manage to craft a stunningly comprehensive exploration of the essential elements of dance music. opening track -love flight- staggers into a lush string-driven groove that recalls the glory of metro area meets wally badarou vibes. minimal yet playful, it lounges somewhere in the depths of the house tradition, calling on familiar sounds while throwing in odd details along the way (harmonicas?). it takes both skill, devotion and a sense of humor to pull this track off, making for a strong opening. -moon tan- lingers on a metallic hook that drags you into a plethora of percussion followed by a rubbery soft baseline. dubby key work would suggest this was a new wave band jamming at compass point, while the icy chill of the xylophone transports you into 80s italo territory. -second sun- pulls out the bag of boogie tricks, relying on a firm but humble baseline and smattering drum machine claps. nile rodgers-style guitar licks guide us onwards into a well-orchestrated jam that builds up and breaks down with perfect timing while dreamy chords reach for the sky. -first light- keeps the groove tight while dipping over towards more balearic temperatures. steeped in a watery atmosphere and gentle organic percussion, it focuses in on a trance-inducing arpeggio that lulls you in to the swaying badarou-style synth swirls that intercept it.

paper recordings ben davis takes off his flash atkins cape and mask to launch a new project exploring things left of centre and balearic. in these disposable times, stubb will celebrate community and diy with a limited run of 300 vinyl screen-printed kraft card sleeves of commissioned illustrations by artist rachel johns plus hand-drawn labels by hebden bridge s the egg factory. we are launching is a journey in to psychedelic balearia with one of the most exciting artists of recent years, jane weaver her mercury music prize long-listed album modern kosmology was described by the guardian as -a lean and thrillingly addictive slice of unearthly pop-. the stubb collaboration is a sublime head trip to the deep reaches of space and electronica with hallucinatory guitars, burbling synths and arpeggiators that are beautifully set off by jane s ethereal vocals. mike lindsay is founder and producer of folktronica pioneers tunng and his distinctive tones sing the praises of doing nothing on boring days, which is psychedelic leftfield pop at its finest. the track is locked down by a nagging fifth bass with vocal pops, hand claps, muted afro guitar, washed synths and arps that build before the choruses hit in a wave of analogue keyboards and fuzz guitar. after that, a gloriously stretched outro takes you straight to the mediterranean. there s also an edited instrumental that brings out the sunshine...

ess o ess (aka chris stoker and jamie blanco) return to not an animal to further indulge in the organic house territories previously mined for the previous releases. the duo have an uncanny nack for deftly balancing the rockier end of disco with the authenticity of early house, and never more so than on -secret place. the original bounces and struts in a pleasingly groove laden hypnotic fashion, while the dub version turns down the guitars and turns up the synthesisers for a more heads-down dance floor excursion. on remix detail kuniyuki takahashi makes his 1st appearance on the label. on the vinyl you ll find an interpretation which can be best be described as pitched-down balearic-techno, which clicks, clacks and folds upon itself, drowning in waves of reverbed drama-drums at a deceptively low tempo. kuniyuki also provides a second remix as a digital exclusive, mildly pulling back on the pomp of the vinyl version, but replacing it with a spacious pathos, complete with backwards guitars that reminiscent of an electronic within without you era beatles. angaphora make their naar debut with their own wildly stirring remix of the lead track, which evokes the golden era of 80s melodic pop music to bewildering success, laden with digitised emotion, singing ebow guitar, and not a kick drum in site.

the next moton release comprises of three tracks carefully selected by love vinyls jake holloway. jake co-owns the second hand department in the store with the mighty zaf. he also is a graphic designer working for one of the world s most prestigious labels barely breaking even/bbe jake djs in around london with regular sets at brilliant corners, spiritland, servant jazz quarters and will be playing at the southern soul festival this summer in montenegro. when label bosses dave jarvis and diesel asked jake to choose the tracks for the release he soon got to work and come up with these three under the radar gems.. morning shunt is a ferocious afro/disco/reggae uptempo dancefloor bomb, hailing from london this fantastic genre crossing tune was ripe for an edit. jaques theme is another off-radar carib-disco banger which will appeal to both the disco and balearic heads. the bandit with it s tuff breaks and spanish guitar will also appeal to the balearic fraternity as well as the b-boys. so three tracks, all of which fall into differing genres making this a very different and varied sounding release!

abandon all expectations ye who enter here, other lands (previous, druid-like incantations on firec015 mac-talla nan creag) got you covered with a truly compelling assortment of jazz snaz and post-armaggedon cosmo-disco oddities, occupying the space between alien-revisited exotica, classic jacking house workouts and a boc chromakey dreamcoat kinda vibe, seemingly elusive at first but definitely familiar to the ears of uncool survivors like you and i. one thing s sure, other lands could throw a balearic party at one of berghain s most secret leather-friendly backrooms that it wouldn t feel out of place. never mind the weird, inverse sun-tan lines.

disco / balearic ... be fast

house heaven on 12-inch. a lofty description, but one that fits most excellent unlimited’s latest offering perfectly. in 1990, boy george and simon rogers (the fall) made a record called “generations of love” for george’s post-culture club project, jesus loves you. legendary nyc dj and producer bruce forest was one of several big names brought in to do a set of remixes, and the better days veteran got to work on several contrasting versions of the cut. the mixes heard here, done at london’s famed olympic studios, are slices of utter ecstasy for anyone who has a taste for ‘90s deep house euphoria and ambient dancefloor excursions, but were unfortunately lost amongst the countless alternate mixes. suffice to say, meu is taking matters into our own hands and has remastered and properly packaged these tracks, directly sourced from forest himself, with the full intention to give this erstwhile dollar-record the respect it deserves. the jazz mix opens with a winding piano solo by andy whitmore (spandau ballet, terence trent d’arby, soul ii soul) that lures the listener into a hypnotic groove that could quite comfortably go on forever but here is constrained by our modesty and the 12-inch format. (a tip for the adventurous dj: flipped to 33rpm the tune becomes an epic balearic chugger, a late-night psylocibic alternative for the heads.) the synth-heavy sounds of the ambient mix on the flip side harken back to the chill-out rooms of the ‘90s but twenty-some years later bring the best kind of vintage charm.

adesse versions has been dropping some choice originals and edits on a host of renowned and respected labels for the last four years and we’re proud to add him to the esteemed list of artists to release on delusions of grandeur. from early white labels on make love in public spaces and his own adesse versions label through to his recent outings on heist, numbers, razor n tape, let’s play house and local talk, he continuous to impress with his raw, sample-heavy production which brings pure energy to the dance floor. for his pulp fusion ep, adesse presents three diverse and brilliant cuts, all showing off his deft touch in the studio and providing what we feel is his strongest work to date. pulp fusion leads the a side with cutting clavinets doubling up the syncopated bassline, a super-charged romp where disco meets filtered house resulting in a track with widespread appeal despite its raw and underground approach. the a2 entitled fade out drops the bpm’s for a string-drenched, philly soul jam, heavy on percussion but with a gentle lilt and balearic vibe that makes it perfect for the wind down. last but definitely not your average b side filler we have the mighty raw in its live edit incarnation. militantly minimal in sonic palate, this jacked up house track simply rocks the spot thanks to adesses ballsy arrangement,production prowess and nasty bassline, rounding off this ep with a punch

man power his raw electronic sound, organic flourishes and diverse selection make him a perfect match for dgtl, both on stage as well as on the imprint. next to releasing a steady flow of records on established labels like esp institute, optimo trax, correspondant and hivern discs, man power is running his own shop as well: me me me. this gives him an outlet to release music by both friends and himself. for his release on dgtl records he created a three-track ep called apologue ep, that showcases just two of different sides of his multi-faceted musical scope. the a-side features two firm, acid influenced tracks. the first of these two, the duelist, is an emotive house record, with a soundscape of piano melodies, synths and syncopated percussion laid on top of an acid bassline. el mago del tiempo features heavy hitting kicks combined with a sharp synth pattern. it has a long build up that keeps evolving throughout the entire composition. halfway through, the track breaks in to a raw and fierce rhythm accompanied by yearning, drawn-out synth pads. on the flipside, put your hands on the car (and get ready to die) brings back memories of a long gone past with nods to balearic pop, ebm, and the soundtrack work of stewart copeland, james horner, and jan hammer. this multi layered production has a warm and analogue sounding feel to it that rounds off a 3 dimensional release.
