in 1986 steve earles new brand of country-rock music was taking nashville by storm. his debut album >guitar town< topped the billboard country album charts, as did the single with the same title.
influenced by bruce springsteen (who was earles eureka!) and townes van zandt (after whom he named his firstborn), this was one of the strongest & most confident debut albums released in the 80s.
he showed an angry literacy, a dark sense of humour & a street-smart snarl that was uncommon amongst his country counterparts and made him stand out amongst the crowd. but he was also ostracised because of his anti-vietnam stance & long hair.

ferocactus pilosus is a common species native to the mexican states of coahuila, durango, nuevo león, san luis potosí, tamaulipas, and zacatecas. colloquially known as the mexican fire barrel cactus, it can be found primarily on rocky limestone hills in semi-desert conditions in a variety of soil types. ferocactus pilosus is a clumping barrel/column cactus with distinct, thick red spines. it produces yellow and red flowers when in bloom and is regarded as a slow-growing yet hardy specimen for home cultivation. our botanists strive to source and produce high-quality specimens to enrich your mind as well as your ears. after many months in the field our team has returned with a diverse selection of sonic seedlings. following a series of meticulous experiments in our research facility each seedling has been deemed safe for general propagation and cleared for release.

indianapolis band led by organist bobby watley (ex-lonnie smith group) and driven by his funky jack mcduff-influenced playing. discovered in march 1971, funk inc had sent bob porter a demo tape which languished in a pile of other until the producer finally got around to working his way through the whole batch. the band s tape grabbed him as soon as he heard the first notes and the rest, as they say, is history. a quintet, funk inc s constituent members were leader bobby watley on organ, eugene barr on tenor saxophone, steve weakley on guitar, jimmy munford on drums and cecil hunt on congas. watley, the leader, worked originally as a drummer, with both winston walls and lonnie smith. he switched to organ in 1969 and was heavily influenced by jack mcduff. barr played his first professional gig with little milton and then went on to lead his own band prior to joining funk inc. munford worked with artists of the calibre of etta james, jerry butler and james brown. hunt had been with the coasters as well as playing with local california bands. weakley was one of the (then) new breed of guitarists whose debt owed as much to jimi hendrix as kenny burrell.

unafraid to push boundaries, ephemerals third album, egg tooth, explores new directions: their modern soul and r&b songs now tinged with flavours of jazz, afrobeat, psychedelia and bluesy cinematic orchestral arrangements. with influences ranging from nina simone to kate tempest, steve reich to alice coltrane, egg tooth sees songwriter hillman mondegreen and singer wolfgang valbrun combine beautifully, marrying direct and honest lyricism with powerful vocal delivery. it s an album with recurring themes of rebirth, love, world politics and philosophy in a varied and eclectic collection of songs - an eclecticism perhaps a reflection of ephemerals diverse backgrounds: the singer wolfgang is a new yorker living in paris, the writer in nottingham, the sax player lives in france, while the keys, trumpet and rhythm section are in bristol, sussex and london.

this compilation should enrich everybody’s soul with a mix of something for everyone who likes or wants to explore the variety of early soul tracks which are finding new favour on today’s uk soul scene. from the lesser known tracks from big name artists like aretha franklin, otis redding, gladys knight and the drifters, to established hits from the valentinos, sam cooke, steve alaimo, chuck jackson and timi yuro.
