as the title suggests, joakim recorded this new album last year at studio venezia, the installation/sculptural ensemble/recording studio created by xavier veilhan for the prestigious 2017 venice art biennale. built inside the french pavilion & inspired by the grotto-like merzbau by kurt schwitters, studio venezia had dozens of artists create and record there over the 6 months of the biennale (from chassol to brian eno, from joakim to sebastien tellier), invited by xavier veilhan himself with the help of co-curator christian marclay. with an impressive collection of rare instruments from medieval horns to rare modular synths (baschet crystals and percussions, a buchla, a clavinet...), studio venezia was an amazing creative playground for the adventurous musician. those instruments were captured by a team of sound engineers in the best possible way thanks to nigel godrich’s (beck, radiohead...) mobile studio loaded with state of the art vintage recording gear.

joakim on samurai: this is a very personal record. i tried to channel the emotions and spontaneity i had when i first started making music. its not about nostalgia, its about the freshness and directness call it naivety you lose when you start becoming a professional musician. i moved to new york almost 5 years ago. these past few years have been a weird combination of excitement and quite challenging events. ive learnt what it means to be exiled, in every sense. this album is about that, being far away from home and from yourself and finding your way back. the album is built like an unknown city, you walk through it, making random turns, getting lost, some corners may bring back memories, you’re getting away from something and at the same time youre on a quest. hence the importance of listening to it in its entirety (yes, im a utopian). it will be the only physical release, very limited. no cd edition. producer, d.j., label manager, tireless gem searcher, musician, music lover, its hard to reduce joakim to a single function xavier veilhan, french artist et sculptor tall lanky weird dude who makes great music

3 years ago, superpitcher made this mesmerizing remix of joakim s cover of neil young s on the beach. the buzz was instant, with djs from dixon to tim sweeney, dj tennis to mike simonetti asking us for the files of this extended deep techno cut. 3 years later we re finally releasing it as a joint crowdspacer / hippie dance release with an additional 20min long (!!) incredible ambient mix.

the first release by parisian iconoclast joakim for his friends and european colleagues at dj tennis life and death records is a miniature nocturne for dance floor meditation, a cascade of unfurling fizzy moods and introspection, finally tuned and expertly rendered by the electronic music maestro. -i met manfredi (tennis) through luke jenner (ex the rapture) in nyc. when manfredi has a few days off his busy touring schedule, he comes to my studio to work with luke on their collaboration project. we usually talk about synths, food, dj gossip and complain about espressos in nyc. about 6 months ago we were eating korean fried chicken and manfredi asked me if i’d like to do something for his label life & death. at the time i had a bunch of club tunes i started working on and somehow had a feeling some of them could be a fit for life & death so i played those and manfredi very quickly picked one, daemon. i thought putting out something on life & death was at the same time kind of odd (and if you didnt notice yet, i like when things are unexpected) and totally appropriat

after about 30 years as techno/house/synth dj, borft now release joakims debut album. you can hear that he really knows what it takes to get your crowd crazy. this record is full off classic (yet bizzarre) house/acid/disco styled stuff and on the entrance track he got company by wonderful vocalist silvia on a classic trip chicago - helsingborg.... check this def. out!!!

in 2015 musician, producer, dj, record collector and tigersushi head honcho joakim played for the first time at mareh festival in boipeba, brasil. like many before him and many since, he found the experience a transformative one. and why not? so many like-minded souls gathered together on a remote island in bahia listening to the sounds of amazing djs while dancing barefoot in idyllic coastal settings all night long. what s not to like? it s quite a concept. in the moment of that experience, joakim vowed to head straight to the studio on his return home to try and recapture that magical vibe, which he did. and true to his word he offered it back to mareh for release on their imprint. a musical gift from the heart. the wonderful percussion and drums characteristic of joakim s productions drift in and around the mix and sit gently alongside the sound of the waves. beautiful arps reach out and capture the glittering stars at night and the first glorious sign of light at sunrise as the party continues. underneath everything the bassline continues to punch through, blending primeval carnival vibes with an electronic sensibility. lovingly mastered and beautifully pressed onto 10 inch vinyl in manila covers, this limited edition release is worthy of any record collection. it also represents a little piece of the magic that is boipeba, and will certainly fit perfectly into those balearic and adriatic settings too.

joakim bouaziz is joakim, main actor of the new, french electronic music wave. emanating from the conservatorium, he took piano lessons since the age of six with the master abdel rahman el bacha. during his adolescence he discovers indie rock to then emmerge deeply into electronic music, guided by labels like warp or mo wax in the middle of the nineties. it is more or less coincedently that he shows interest for producing music, it was the day when a colleague from school forgot his synthesizer in his room. there he discovered new possibilities of sound and finally sends his demos to gilb r, founder and head of versatile records

joakim is back.this time tough, he surprises us with a small pop jewel! but lonely hearts is not a classic pop song, it is much more joakims interpretation of one. a catchy tune, which does not want to be one. an exciting contrast between catchiness and a bleeping onslaught.on lonely hearts, cheesy sounding strings really stand out over a stoic stomping drum beat, dark singing grates against beeping keyboard playing, in the chorus a wonderful melody has a comforting effect over the very sad lyrics.in addition to the album version and the radio edit, the lonely hearts maxi also features the loving hand remix by tim goldsworthy. the musician (lcd soundsystem) and label owner (dfa records) skillfully pulls lonely hearts to the left, brushing it into a dark club track. with the distorted slow motion vocals, the funky bass run and the demanding beats, it is suddenly very close to the sound that already characterized joakims club hits are you vegetarian and come into my kitchen. and you ll also fin a joakim dub of the track. this dub keep the pop side of the song with a more catchy approach for a more dancefloor version of the original and with always the weirdness you use to find now in the joakim production !supported by tim sweeney, prins thomas

those who experienced listening to the original maria rita version of -cântico brasileiro nº3 (kamaiurá)- on the dancefloor know it’s such a thrilling experience that could only be better if the song was a bit longer. at the same time, it didn’t make much sense to mess with the original. having these thoughts on their minds, the selvagem boys augusto olivani and millos kaiser (the minds behind selva discos) had an insight while discussing the reissue of the -brasileira- material with singer maria rita stumpf: why not hit the studio and remake the track? also, why not ask someone like joakim, known for his exquisite taste and brilliant production skills, to remix -lamento africano/rictus-? it would be the perfect package. and that’s what happened.
