with many writers a theme develops in their works that, over time, reveals color and definition previously unseen, not just a new perspective, but a new understanding. “lofeye” is a concept album and personal testament that philadelphia rapper lojii (fka uhlife) has been piecing together over the last three years, giving only hints with 2015’s no ebola, 2016’s dutti, and 2017’s acclaimed collaborative album due rent with producer swarvy on portland-based imprint fresh selects. in lojii’s own words, “lofeye is about working with limited resources and making the highest quality life out of what the f**k you got. it’s when you’re ‘lo-fi’ by circumstance (not just for aesthetic) but your aim is always higher. in essence, this is an lp about being rooted in the dirt you come from but reaching for the sky above you.”

rap was something that just happened to her. keny arkana was only twelve when she started writing her first lyrics. her first contacts with the record business came in 2005. but even before she infiltrated the matrix, keny released her first opus, l’esquisse, a fast and furious street album containing the hit “le missile est lancé” produced by tefa & masta as well as “de l’opéra à la plaine”, a gargantuan freestyle track by twenty writers born and bred on the streets of marseilles. 12 years after l’esquisse and 6 years after l’esquisse 2, keny releases l’esquisse 3. a spontaneous, creative, sincere, energetic and meaningful record, with powerful rhythmic and precise arrangements. even though the record has a mixtape appearance, it hasn’t been a botched job, as evidenced by its complex structure and harmony: musical interludes around the four elements, true rap anthems like “couleur molotov” or “lejos” and contemporary hits like “abracadabra” or “freestyle beatbox” with beatboxer tressym for an instrumental. both dark in its lyrics and lively in its energy, keny’s mixtape l’esquisse 3 reveals again an artist just as we could dream in 2017: clear-sighted, offensive, touching and inspired. dear she’s been missed!

samples of songs, speeches, interviews, field recordings and films were carefully chosen and rearranged: rhythms from africa are integrated with voices from harlem, conversations about race and identity between writers and ethnomusicologists are constructed, speeches from activists are conjoined with the voices of prisoners. this process of combining pre-existing material has inspired three >meditations on afrocentrism<.

formed by snow patrols gary lightbody as an outlet for his fascination with country music, tired pony began taking shape in may 2009. by october, the solo project had grown into a full-fledged supergroup featuring another snow patrol veteran, iain archer, his wife miriam kaufmann, producer/musician jacknife lee, belle & sebastian percussionist richard colburn, auxiliary r.e.m. member scott mccaughey, and troy stewart. peter buck joined several months later, and tired pony traveled to portland in early 2010 to record the debut album. featuring guest appearances by zooey deschanel, m. ward, and editors frontman tom smith, >the place we ran from< was finished in one week and released later that year.
