the mysterious wilson phoenix returns with another batch of muscular techno joints that ll wipe the floor with any half-hearted 4/4 pretenders. considering how sought after his earlier releases are, don t expect this to hang around for long. the beastly 909 kicks on -dorphin- would slot in perfectly with head front panel s own blown out take on peak time rabble rousing techno, while the kick-clap sync on dexed will get fists a-shaking. it s not all blunt drums though - there s plenty of peppy colour splashed all over this record to make it stand out from the crowd. this ain t no monochrome chugging business!

the ep opens with i need , a pulsating ear worm of a track that wastes no time in luring you into its embrace. perhaps leaving the best till last and bringing it back to the four-to-the-floor touch, theo s party is on the money, boasting that favoured 90 s house flare with a sprinkling of modern flavour designed to have fists punching the air at any time of day or night.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. john cage once stepped into an anechoic chamber expecting to hear silence. instead, he heard the low-end throb of his own blood pulsing through his body. this is the story that gave blood music, the first new act on diagonal, their name. it is an appropriate one too: simon pomery, the creative lead and only ever-present member of the band, strikes his guitar with screwdrivers, mallets and his own bare fists, frequently putting real blood into the blood music that spits violently from the band.

while the first release on wania, busen & paleos >stream of love< (featuring dj sotofetts anthemic overdub-12inchedit) was a rather leftfield affair, dritfett is aimed more directly towards the dancefloor. the label artwork gives a clear clue as to what this release is all about: amongst a number of cryptic messages and shout-outs in norwegian - a tr-909 logo. all the tracks here are based around the 909 - thunderous kickdrums and sharp, hissing hi-hats that cut through the mix. still, theres a broad range of sounds, from head-down, fists-clenched warehouse workouts with an industrial edge, to more melodic tracks with detroit references aplenty. make no mistake though: this is all about the power of the almighty 909. theres no fancy tricks here‚ no ableton-trickery or polished waveforms, just good honest techno with a real raw live feel. this gives the tracks the energy and spontaneity that is sorely missed in many of todays productions. the kind of energy you will find - in abundance - in the house and techno releases of the 90s. the kind of energy that can only be achieved by pressing play on a machine, frenetically twisting knobs and punching buttons while letting the energy of the room decide where to go next.
