it is time to close a first chapter with the 4th release of the label inviting all founding artists to contribute a track to form an eclectic but surprisingly coherent e.p. this is the definition of jazz cabage’s liberated club music.

after the success of the joe cleen ep, jazz cabbage returns in purple with a special new draft in the team: daisuke kondo from okayama, japan. after spending his teenage years playing bass in local psychedelic bands, daisuke finds his calling through detroit soulful house, and delivers here a well rounded punchy deep house ep with distinctive jazzy harmonies & percussions. on the flip is french broken beat don kaffe creme doing what he does best. follow the cabbage!

the 4th meters album marked their departure from josie records and was released on the reprise label in 1972. cabbage alley once again proved that the meters were one of the finest, rawest funk groups around. hailing from the soggy streets of new orleans, the meters essentially invented the second line groove, influencing funk music like no other artist (ok, aside from a singer by the name of james brown). these cats are essentially one unified rhythm section, with expertly timed drum breaks, bass driven grooves, bluesy chicken scratch guitars and southern singalong choruses.

another serious result from our warehouse rummaging! si begg is a man of many musical personalities, his list of aliases is impressive to say the least (bigfoot, buckfunk3000, lenny logan, s.i. futures, zygmunt janowski...). but one of his oldest, and certainly one of his strangest, is cabbage boy. in fact i confess i am old enough to remember his releases in the early 90s on cassette tape under the umbrella of the >cabbage head collective< (which also included such techno notables as cristian vogel & tim wright) - and pretty mental they were too. the lost tapes vol. 1 doesnt disappoint on that front, containing such gems as a remix of 80s pop mysteries frank chickens>we are ninja<, and an electronic cover version of >king kong< by frank zappa (ask your parents...). totally out there, but totally cool at the same time...highly recommended to anyone looking for something with some real personality amidst the hard-drives full of faceless (and usually nameless) digital fluff
