die compilation »monkey business« vereint reggae-stücke aus der zeit zwischen 1968 und 1970 in einer schicken limitierten 10 x 7”-single box. die zusammenstellung fußt auf der ursprünglichen ›monkey business‹ lp auf trojan von 1980.
mit desmond dekker, the upsetters und max romeo sind viele der stilprägenden künstler vertreten. boss sounds oder auch ›classic skinhead reggae‹ genannt, bezeichnet die musikalische strömung des ska aus jamaika, die von britischen skinheads der arbeiterklasse als ausdruck ihrer subkultur übernommen wurde. die meisten stücke wurden für die dancehalls produziert und sind entsprechend upbeat.

jonas friedlich, better known through mistress recordings and carl gari, releases his first solo 12- on molten moods. the versatile 4 track ep starts with the rather straight -bo s breakfast- that begins with a polyrhythmic 303 bass line leading into a catchy garage-ish chorus, kicking in out of a clear sky but fittingly. -bus driver- is a wicked trip, the combination of the long acid build up and a nicely chopped vocal bit is irresistible. a proven, tested (and molten moods certified) club banger, regardless of its rather untypical breakbeat. track number 3 called -praise your name- aces groove through perfectly cut vocal samples and a fancy reference to 90s hip hop and drum n bass aesthetics. the next and last piece on the record is the eponymous -deskjet-, which is inspired by friedlichs conceptual sound art installations using printers. here rather restrained synthie lines are underpinned by a powerful kick and psychedelic tape delay noises. the 12- vinyl is handstamped on both sides. mastered and cut by scape mastering. artwork by paul bernhard.

ep number four of this series of eight remastered tracks with remix-tributes to the techno legend christian morgenstern is here, and kicks off with d_funcs remix of steigreider on side a. creating a warm grayscale atmosphere, the track is carried by a heavy sub kick groove thats saturated with the modern industrial energy that proves kowalski’s skills as a techno craftsman. as a contrast, jeroen searchs remix of aces high on b1 is a more minimal interpretation, carried by a slowly developing beat and playing skillfully with the most recognisable elements of the original. the final track, a remastered version of morgensterns lydia to the edge of panic is a timeless classic, painting a morgenstern-typical distant and dream like landscape and opening up into a widescreen chord progression, with an epic build up.

a-z is a new label started by al zanders ! this stand-out new production talent has already, across only a handful of releases (as lodger on the stamp label & under his own name on karakul & blind jacks journey) made quite a name for himself ! a-z is a new platform for his distinctive and eclectic output after sharing a stage at shambala festival, al was impressed by the 7 piece sheffield group hot diamond aces, who sent the crowd into a dancing frenzy with their bombastic brass licks and afro-beat inspired rhythms. so impressed in fact, that he approached them afterwards with the idea of doing a remix and starting a label. the reworked version of dsomc is a certified corker that has already been tearing up dancefloors. for the flip, things get deeper with an unashamedly happy house jam raiz , which features some twinkling keys from sleepsang. perfect for the summer!

slaines third official solo lp, the king of everything else boasts blessings from ill bill, vinnie paz, tech n9ne, madchild of swollen members, bishop lamont, apathy, jaysaun, termanology, reks, and the arcitype, and is produced by longtime slaine collaborator louis bell, statik selektah and dj lethal. also tagging along are some of boston hip-hops younger aces, including rite hook and moroney.
