the german jazz quintet fazer releases the 12inch white sedan with two remixes by glenn astro & hodini (apollo, ninja tune, tartelet, money sex etc.) and werkha (tru thoughts). the band appeared on the map in march with their self-released debut album mara.
dmitry meshcheryakov hails from moscow but lives in canada, where he s been busy pumping out classically informed garage house for over five years. now plastik people s new sublabel rhythm people carries his first vinyl release, and hes stepped up with some surefire party starters. body werk is a bad ass swinger with a crafty bassline and all the right stabs and samples, while hands together gets into a more rolling peak time house flow. mike millrain drops a heavy remix of body werk that keeps the original ingredients intact and simply builds on them with subtle flourishes. smokey bubblin b gets busy with hands together, crafting a classic shuffling masterclass from the component parts.
the second release on werk is signed by j. manuel. the young producer has been polishing his sound ever since he first started experimenting with electronic music gear as a child. his commitment to following his own instincts rather than conforming to what was being played around him resulted in a very different aesthetic to the one commonly associated with berlin techno. drive fiction ep stands proof of that. all 3 tracks push boundaries in their own style, that being perhaps the strongest link between them. the title track -drive fiction- presents old-school leads over broken beats and electro inspired pads while the a2 -falling in sine circulation- is arguably the most dance floor oriented track, with a pounding 4×4 kick drum and an alarming 3/4 sine wave slaying the high frequencies. closing the ep is b-side -softer-, a melodic track with long, undulating pads that is nonetheless driven by a powerful rave-inspired beat. with its second release, werk comes to confirm the path it seeks to travel through both parties and releases: that of the sounds less rigid. gritty, wild and presenting a wide range of rhythmic patterns, drive fiction ep is a defying record. challenge accepted?
module werk continues his fine form of recent releases with another fresh sounding production for lime street music. slabs of raw drum patterns meet jittery acid and nervy cold synths resulting in four different trips for varying moods. jeremiah r appears on remix duties and turns out a real late night driving track in his usual signature style.
