following the first chapter of andy mac sdiving birdseries, idle hands welcomes italian producer piezo into the fold with an ep that harks back to the smoky, dubwise ambience of some of the label s earliest releases. luca mucci was a bristol resident for a few years before returning to his native milan, carving out an identity for his piezo alias with a slew of dubstep-focused eps on labels such as artikal music and subaltern. while on an idle hands skirmish stateside and playing on ny radio, one of the kelly twins dropped lume and remarked on how idle it sounded, sparking the process that led to this record. you can sense a link the early kowton records on ep opener opeq, all monochromatic textures and taut, slow-stalking rhythms, but here those facets are interspersed with a unique melodic elegance that offsets the moody immersion of the track, eventually blooming out into an effervescent slice of slow-motion house music. novemiluano meanwhile displays muccis capabilities in handling broken beats, exercising a devastating restraint without compromising on presence or energy in crafting a stunning piece of meditative soundsystem music. pushing that foundational dub principle of space and minimalism even further, lume closes the record out in stunning style with an intimate, glacial stepper that champions minute detail as much as looming gaps in the sound. with a peppering of micro sampling atop a deathly bassweight march, its a finely pointed arrow aimed right at the heart of idle hands, and we couldn t be happier to be releasing it.

having lurked around murky corners of the grubby industrial techno realm for the past year or so, pavel milyakov builds on his rapidly swelling discography with this transmission for public system. it s the second release on the label following a strong opening salvo from dj spider and greypeople, and this 12- offers up further forthright club-wreckers that balance taut functionality with production flair. opening cut -strainn- delivers bludgeoning electro from the netherworld, which ekman then dutifully reworks with an added eerie tension. there are edgy arpeggios aplenty on -trance t- and warmer tones in -augusts 13-, rounding out an essential slab of serious techno tackle.

timmy ps latest outing on dessous recordings continues the long list of illustrious labels that have been home to his house vision. now based in london, timmy has a string of emphatic releases under his belt, not least on influential imprints such as local talk, extended play, dirt crew and madtech. with safety first, timmys playful approach to the deeper side of house shines though. the title track mixes crisp, crunchy drums with warm, soft pads and a bubbling bass line - a deep rolling cut with plenty of punch for the floor. the fantastically named grim fandango is a little tougher, with the snares and claps snapping tightly over a taut, un-resistible vibe. timmys balance of dynamics is masterful, each element perfectly complimenting each other to create a tour de force over 8 minutes. bosh is similarly crafted - the original echoing classic 90s house but feeling completely fresh for 2016, while james dexters remix is a robust, deep roller. this is house music made with joy and passion.

the true techno dream team of dubfire & oliver huntemann revisit their elements project from a few years ago with a new series of killer remixes, ahead of a retrospective album coming later in the year. terra - originally released in 2011, did all sorts of damage to dance-floors across the globe. now, its all set to do it again thanks to this joseph capriati remix. the italian techno headliner has grown into a major force on the scene in recent years, and here delivers a signature slice of muscular, driving techno - taut, dramatic and devastating. paired with a remix of the now seminal feugo julien jeweils remix also hits the spot - the track received a 2016 overhaul with some of jeweils signature flair. the frenchman has been a constant figure on the top of various charts and line ups for some time, and its easy to see why - fuego is stripped back machine funk primed for big systems and even bigger moments.

rustling pillows, irate flamingos, drums thumped feverishly in basements. tweaked cassettes, noisy buses, restless hands tapping dashboard rhythms in thick dusk traffic. found sound, musique concre&#768,,te, stuttering drum loops forged in twilight boredom — hyperedited into ruminative dance collages. pillow by mischa lively (ne&#769,,e barton, blake): 4 songs, 25 minutes, a hybrid of exertion and uplift. pillow marks both the nashville native’s debut for racecar and the denouement of an evolution. once rigidly stuck to notions of how rhythm should be utilized — barton is a trained percussionist — the producer eventually realized the potential in limiting himself to a minimalist diet of new and archived drum loops from which to build songs. studying myriad treatment techniques, barton then executed a vision unmoored to binary ideas about “live” versus “electronic,” blurring lines as he composed with an ear for idm, dub, techno, and ambient music. hence pillow: a vast assemblage of rhythm and sound performed to mirror the spirit of dance records. indeed, the 12” is as ripe for warehouse parties as meditative nights alone, headphones affixed, candles lit, marveling at the mysteries humans conjure with physical limbs. “rhythm is instinctual to me,” barton remarks when asked about his preference for recording analogue patterns versus beats sourced from 1s and 0s. “and i dislike sitting nearly as much as working from computers.” movement, then, is a virtue to barton, and in mischa lively he’s found a taut, elegant, propulsive vehicle in which to explore it.

the girl and the chameleon will probably fall under the genre tags of acid, electro and techno but it is so much more. witschkowski has been responsible for exemplary electronics throughout his career and this latest is undeniably some of his best. the album sees the exaltics don a dust mask. warehouse parties, strobe lights and fog machines and the 90s underground acid scene are definite influences. but theres more. across thirteen tracks and two slabs of wax the jena artist takes you on a journey into his world. gnarled and clinical grooves, caustic 303 encounters, depraved dancefloor destroyers and soothing machine music. a sonic trek through tough and taut textures with touches of tenderness. an album that shows a depth of ability, an enviable talent and a knowledge of how to break floorboards.

after last autumn’s ‘knowledge ep’, héctor oaks returns to key vinyl with four more solid dancefloor fillers of the kind we’re starting to expect from the berlin-based upstart. now several records deep and with his fourth berghain set firmly behind him, these days his sound is about as honed and gratifying as skills from the booth. and ‘kepler 186f’ is the proof.
on the a-side “dissolve” sets its sinews to march on this taut, tough and punchy number. “radial clicles” then reins in the muscle a bit in favour of a more skulking, spectral slow-build. meanwhile on the b-side, “stone storage” sends cool cymbals and crunchy hats on a sinuous, calculated romp. leaving “avoid reality” to close in noisy, bombastic fashion. but watch out—this one’s a bit of a tease.

it grabs you and turns you round. resistance is futile. fall into it gleefully because the darkness has been lit, there is a chill in the air and you feel as taut as a bow. laurent pastor and marc lapeyre (fkclub) are responsible for decadanse where ice doesnt hurt anymore according to the whisper in the title track. the label head was convinced by his partner to start production in a basement studio to create a sound using guitars and synthesisers. the coming together of these 2 strong (id)entities has culminated in an ep which is cinematic (train in vein, easy drive), distinguished post-punk (plan b) and electronic (decadanse). and when susuma makai ventures into the meandering ruin, he delivers a mind-blowing version.

rounding off the vinyl series that accompanies themas label-defining strength in numbers compilation, part 4 downsizes from 12 inch to 7 inch to present two distinctive jams that show some of the farthest reaches of the new york imprints sound. laurine frost may be best known as part of the nonconformist house and techno scene of europe through releases on perspectiv, sharingtones and nervmusic, but on this special creation for thema he makes the perfect tribute to the city that gave rise to the label, with a little help from the racy diatribe of amiri baraka on “your house”. by way of a truly special finale for the series, minneapolis maverick dj slip graces the label with an all-too rare appearance, taking an altogether more primal approach on “x7” that channels his years spent conjuring up next level techno for missile, music man and more into a taut and punchy electro excursion infected with tricked out effects and seductive sci-fi noir atmospherics. it’s the perfect example of the freaky fringes thema has comfortably reached to over the course of the last forty releases.

federsen returns to fifth interval for another sublime instalment of dance floor friendly dub-techno. dewpoint is an altogether tighter affair when compared to the label s first release, point reyes. the drums are taut and razor-sharp, propelling the listener effortlessly through a dense fog of ferric clouds, swelling to fill the outer-reaches of the echo chamber. a highly polished metallic production style that can be compared to some of andy stott s early and classic works. tomas rubek remixes dewpoint for the b-side, remaining faithful to the original track s structure but viewing it through a tinted lens. dewpoint s chords become iridescent, kick drums fall into a straighter pattern and are backed by further dusty percussion, shifting the original into spheres inhabited by the likes of rod modell and fluxion.

the utopia project, yet another one of many pseudonyms for legendary producer rheji burrell of burrell brothers fame. all 4 of the files contained within this ep bear the classic hallmarks and sounds of the burrell brothers signature style, taut drum programming, deep, melodic synth washes, bass-lines from the darkest recesses of nycs streets and dance-floors and an instantly recognizable atmosphere. like much of the brothers output these tracks are designed to be heard either very, very late at night or in the early hours of the morning and are some of the defining sounds of new yorks underground night-clubs in the formative parts of the 1990s. a true underground house record, over 20+ years old and still sounding as fresh and current as ever, file 1 is now available again for 2015, re-mastered and re-pressed with the permission of and in conjunction with the burrell brothers / nu-groove records, new york city.

gravious (real name alastair jackson) is a dubstep and electronic music producer based in glasgow. his early releases came via the hotflush label, and its scuba sub-label. more recent releases have come through highpoint lowlife, davey jones, saigon and broken bubble. now gravious offers halocyan his most ambitious work to date, the *rolling thunder ep*. the eps title track begins with glassy, plinking synths that segway into a rollicking, stuttering beat. pitched up vocals lend a 90s throwback vibe to this fun, uplifting number. hotly tipped new york producer octo octa (100% silk) cools down the original with loads of house flavor and his own pristine melodies. on the b-side, *release*, is a towering, glacial epic pushed along by a lurching, pulsating bassline and sensual, shifting vocals. closing out the record is *sulaco squares*, a taut, careful arrangement packed to the brim with colorful melodies and arpeggios.

jack dixon follows a string of critically acclaimed releases for apollo (r&s), take and losing suki (hypercolour) with his debut outing for hotflush. influenced by the sparse atmospherics of wolfgang voigt, the playful intricacy of autechre beats and the off-kilter grooves of uk garage, the berlin-based producer is unconstrained by genre or place, pioneering a modern, progressive sound that has already garnered him a glowing reputation. in turns colourful, ambient, melodic and driving, his new ep feels right at home on scubas label. beginning with a deceptively clean and minimal rhythm, >e< slowly gives way to lush glacial drones, skittering beats and huge euphoric drops to form a bold production that sits somewhere between the early morning techno dancefloors of berlin and the murky sweatbox raves of late-night south london. on the flip, he delivers the soulfully taut >find shelter<. warped vocals weave in and out of an insistent, jazzy house groove, backed by a tapestry of glitches, vinyl crackle and live drum flourishes. it all leads to one of the most delirious and ecstatic drops you will hear this year.

steve bug drops a new outstanding 12inch on his own highly prolific poker flat recordings. those grooves is the perfect primer for his upcoming album (due out in autumn 2012), and sees the man in fine form - masterfully in control of his sound and producing tracks with a depth of dancefloor knowledge most other producers would die for. those grooves, the lead track locks into its exquisitely crafted groove early on, holding a taut balance between its individual elements. mid way through its 10 minutes, bug drops the tempo and lets the groove breath, before bringing it all back home - an audacious late night club weapon. the flip side is no less dramatic – tell me why creeps up, evolving slowing but surely – before an edgy, freaked out bass line drops over the crisp drums. a true peak time burner with enough energy and tension to smash any floor.

martin landskys outstanding form continues with his latest release on poker flat recordings–his first outing on steve bugs label since his stunning contribution to the‚jack is back ep earlier this year. with over 10 years of association with the label, landsky is a poker flat mainstay - and with this release, its not hard to see why.the composer is an atmospheric tech-house work out that kicks off with a tight and funky groove, and then expands into an off-kilter dancefloor bomb, with nagging synth lines weaving their way through the taut, finely- tuned production. on the flip,moodmusic main-man sasse adds a dubbier take on the track, pushing the drums up in the mix and teasing out the acidic riffs to full effect. expertly building the tension, the track resolves itself in an epic breakdown.
