rainer veil are liam morley and dan valentine, two friends who met while studying contemporary music in the north of england. the pair began improvising and making drones in a dark basement before incorporating a broader palette and forming rainer veil as an ongoing concern last year. *struck* is their first ep and debut for modern love, following an appearance at the label boiler room takeover in august 2012.

ltd 2021 repress - back in the early 90s dave coker, justin bailey and laurant webb set up a music production studio a stones throw away from the famous cutty sark in greenwich, along with dave deptford pine as one the founders of the aforementioned studio. they called themselves strangeweather, worked on different dance music styles and formed the fabulously awesome, but slightly ill fated band wubble u. around the same time justin struck up a friendship with nathan coles, a then madly enthusiastic young dj who was starting to make a name for himself on the thriving underground house scene. nathan introduced justin to terry francis and the rest of the crew and collectively the formed housey doings. they released two records on the bush subsidiary imprint green grass and as if by magic tech house was officially born. fast forward a couple of years and the boys replaced the s with a ‘z and struck out on their own. this is a re-release of the first record on the label they named after the now legendary club night wiggle. two sides of proper, uk style tech house - a sound thats been copied, plagiarized and endlessly imitated. but never bettered

when i first stumbled across mix tapes out of hamburgs seminal front club (with klaus stockhausen and boris dlugosch at the helm) during the glorious and carefree early days of the popularized internet, there were certain tracks on them that struck a chord. in fact there was one specifically, i couldnt stop listening to. the mixture of an infectious bass line, a super sharp snare, music and harmony vocal snippets, happy claps and synths lines that evoked pictures of a convertible going down a coastline, and - to top it all off - a tribal chant, was irresistible. after some intensive track-id-hunting pre-shazam, i found out that the heaven-sent hymn was music by an act called syncbeat. originally released in 1984 during the craze that was called uk electro via street sounds resp. streetwave and later licensed to german omnivore zyx records. a joint venture between the electro-funk mastermind,dj pioneer and edit maestro greg wilson as well as manchester musicians martin jackson & andy connell, it is exactly that type of dance track that eludes any classification - as you can see from my description above. or to cite greg wilson himself from one of his essays on the subject of uk electro: the track that received the best response was music by syncbeat, which was full of good vibes and could have easily been re-vamped down the line as a house track.

some time around 20 years ago, the artist known as dub surgeon made an absorbing album of beautiful dub infused with ambiance, found sounds and horizontal rhythms. the lost future was recorded at the former amsterdam film academy where dub surgeon. the recording engineer for the project was ricardo villalobos. dub surgeon and ricardo villalobos then mastered it together, putting it through several vintage mixers and recording it to 2 inch tape. then, tragedy struck: a storm surged and ignited a fire that ravaged the studio. the master copy was thought to have been lost forever. dub surgeon stopped making music and disappeared into the shadows after just two eps on future dub in 2002/3. but one day 15 years later, totally out of the blue, he received a demo of the lost future. pay attention to this, it said. attached was a demo version of the long lost album and now, finally, it has a perfect and impossibly poetic home on dubais ark to ashes, which is named in homage to the story of lee scratch perry burning down his black ark studio to rid it of demons. sounding as fresh as ever, the lost future is an authentic dub experience with a story as special as the music itself.

a chance encounter at university during the acid house summer of ’88 and subsequent bonding over baby ford’s “oochy koochy” established a life-long friendship between leicester lads, jimi o’callaghan and al green. inspired by the sounds of detroit, early ny house like murk and masters at work and the emerging uk sounds of lfo, orbital and aphex twin, the pair began djing and making music as the wild geese. their first ep, “the wild geese ep”, was released in 1994 on their own giddy goose recordings imprint. the guys pressed 500 copies and, with jimi’s connections made interning with pete tong’s ffrr, sold copies direct to london shops. the record sported packaging designed to look like an american 12” and an accompanying press release attributed the ep to a fictitious dj duo hailing from wisconsin. rave reviews followed and a distribution deal was struck with vital uk, who produced and sold another 500 copies worldwide. another ep followed a year later. sadly, plans for a third ep on the label never materialized, but the pair remain close to this day. 24 years later we are honored to reintroduce this genre-defying, uniquely forward-thinking ep to today’s dance floors.

an ardent heart is a focused techno mini album that brings forward stefan goldmann’s most dancefloor-centered material in a decade. the tracks push and pull relentlessly. despite their linear appeal, there is an intricately balanced interplay between the heavy-handed kicks, the bouncy bass accents and the sizzling, yet clear-cut details whipped up by the rallying drums. the peculiar, seemingly “vocalised” mode of synthesis is maybe the most unifying sonic characteristic of the six tracks and one coda. formant shaping, vowel filters and airstream perturbations let a wide range of sounding elements speak in the tongues of a cybernetic babylon. layered polymetric patterns perforate the aural plane with alien scripts. clearly structured, yet opaque messages that seem to have traveled for aeons emanate from the red-hot circuitry. they spill into a network of delays, channeled down into labyrinthine corridors, enveloped in electrostatic noise. most tracks build on chance patterns evoked with hardware sequencers and freeform modulation sources. the resulting synthetic systems are as cohesive as they exhibit vast internal variation and range. thus balancing simplicity and complexity right in the middle, the results are just as immediately gripping as they can feed sustained attention. a wide palette of distortion and overtones mark the contours of individual elements that seem to have near-physical qualities – as if there were metallic strings, thick membranes, a resonating sphere, all struck by electric mallets, caused to vibrate by mechanical bows and sung by silicone lips.

casey tucker is on a roll at the moment, and his infectious brand of uplifting, full-fat machine soul seems to have struck a chord in many places (not least via his reissues on for those that knoe). after appearing on love notes back in 2015, tuckers back on the label with another salvo of colourful, charming and utterly magnificent house jams shot through with the inventive programming of techno. alternative faction is many things a bubbly acid track, a swooning deep house cut and a sassy broken beat affair and yet feels utterly smooth in its execution. that time of year has plenty of motor city soul feeding into its composition, not least in the gorgeous synth strings, and new mission gets busy in the swing with all kinds of bouncing melodies and rhythms.

hiroshi watanabe does not hold back on threshold of eternity ep. the leonids strings is a deeply emotional and delicate string arrangement that leaves the listener beauty struck and in awe. into the memory is a dance floor banger which holds true to watanabe s exquisite skill as a techno producer. the release contains a beautiful balance between groove and beauty which is rarely present in a techno record. the cover photography is a photo by watanabe himself of his hometown tokyo.

the second of march’s trio of killer polytechnic youth 45s is a mighty extended piece of slow building berlin school-esque electronica extended over 2 sides of a 33rpm disk, recorded by adam leonard, initially from a batch of 18 tracks recorded at varying times over the last six years.
“entkommen” is his first release for the label here, and both artist and label rather liked the idea of one extended track across two sides of a 45, whereby the listener must flip the disc at a half way point to continue the piece. it struck us as increasingly unusual and works a treat here...
adam has amassed a number of acclaimed releases in varying styles, and across a number of esteemed labels over the years. last year’s full band release “invaderband” being shortlisted for a northern ireland music prize 2017 and was 6music recommended. not to mention previous releases in collaboration with the owl service and p.g six.
his electronic home recordings are all well worth investigating and polytechnic youth proudly releases the first fruits of those sessions right here. a numbered, limited edition vinyl only 7” hand numbered to 250 copies.

the tiefschwarz boys have just struck musical gold with their latest offering for souvenir, a fresh ep delivered by the electro trailblazer named bolz bolz (germanys andreas bolz) whos done more for underground music than you probably realize. practice paris is a 4-track ep which dives into the murky, broken beat and techno tinted territory mr. bolz has honed to perfection - with each track tried and tested from the souvenir crew to stunning result.

east man is a new project from anthoney hart and its material predates his previous work as basic rhythm. his unique take on grime reduces the sound to its steely fundamentals, bringing in influences from dancehall, drum and bass and techno to gird the voices of the mcs he works with. his own name for this hardcore continuum mongrel is hi tek.
anthoney struck a friendship with the academic and theorist paul gilroy, who wrote the album introduction below, after starting personal research on representations of working class and mixed race families. he asked paul for some help after coming across his work via stuart hall, paul’s mentor. their discussions and friendship developed, and it dawned on anthoney that his research and the east man album had some synergy, so he asked paul to write a piece conveying that.

fausto messina is a veteran dj and producer from treviso, a small town on the plain between the gulf of venice and the alps. fausto has been releasing music for more than 10 years and pica pica is his debut e.p. on cadenza. in the track named pica pica a recurrent evocative voluminous chord is convoyed by a classy powerful kick drum and an organic symphony of fluffy percussions and metallic bonks, with a triumphant layer of dense whistles and shimmering cymbals. the extremely intense vibrant rhythms of idiophono contrast with the gentle reverberating harmonies of an ensemble of struck idiophones, angelically flowing in the background of the track. the smooth magnetic flux of planets ballet concludes the e.p. with high style. this jacky stride over a stack of steamy synthesisers and bubbly bleeps is a golden tune for a quivering late-night dance-floor.

uk techno veteran kirk degiorgio takes on the future/past guise once more for an exquisite 4 tracker on the belgian de:tuned label. kirk struck gold during a recent dig through some of his old dat tapes and unearthed 2 previously unreleased gems: a finished version of his widely acclaimed 90s classic “hyperspace” described by kirk as the real hyperspace and “cosmos”, a rough uptempo percussive workout, proper crunch future/past sound.
the dat tapes also revealed a couple of tracks that were only ever released on cd: “try 2004 funk mix 2” (from the historic 1993 “applied rhythmic technology” compilation) and “locator” (from the sublime “objets d’art 92-95” compilation). the cds have become rare and wanted items, and so kirk and de:tuned decided to finally press these tracks on wax.
all tracks were mastered straight off the original dat tapes by matt colton to guarantee that extra crisp sound quality. this release will be available on 180 gr vinyl.

next up on asking for trouble after selling out the album and re-pressing comes a four track remix ep for radioactive man’s luxury sky garden album. life-time friend of radioactive man and control tower partner dexorcist aka simon brown is first up to deliver his take on ‘sonic portal’ on the a side. his style has always been uncompromising and as a music lover and dj he s been a major influence on tenniswood’s style and taste for a long time. dexorcist turns in a detroit influenced banger which goes deep. ben pest then follows with his own take of the same track. a member of funk band pest, purveyor of wonky techno, music tech teacher and hardware enthusiast ben has also released on jerome hill’s don t’ label, i love acid and horror boogie to name a few. his take on ‘sonic portal’ is as genre bending and weighted as you’d expect. over on the b side pain struck stanley dumb remix ‘blast furnace’ - a fast and furious electro track which was released as a digital bonus to the album. they work it into a breakneck speed techno number. taste the amphetamine! completing the package biggabush (aka glyn bush) brings his dub influence to the mix. bush of rockers hi-fi connected with radioactive man during a mastering session asking to do the mix after hearing the record. the results are impressive and provide a welcome tempo and vibe change to the ep with its deep and dubby elements.

i have tried to recount this most peculiar of musical cases many times before but with each attempt some strange ailment has struck me dumb. i feel that if i put fingers to keyboard i might at least be able to help other revellers, less fortunate than myself to share my wicked fate...

reissue of a classic! the label: tk records in essence represents the city of miami when it came to soul/r&b and the early stages of disco. in 1974, george mccrae gave the label its first no. 1 disco hit with rock your baby. a little more than a year after mccrae s hit, the record label struck gold with kc & the sunshine band with five 1 songs on the billboard hot 100. needless to say at the height of the genreÆs cultural domination tk did pretty well.
