ltd repress - long awaited re-issue of the classic, hard-to-find op-art ep by drum n bass legend photek. originally released in 1996 and featuring photek s first foray into techno and science fiction future-jazz - this re-issue has been meticulously remastered for it s rebirth twenty years later.

following on from his long awaited album ku:palm in november of last year, we now see its lead track pyramid get a vinyl release on photeks own label, photek productions. the eastern instrumentation and spacey beats may not be apt for every dance floor, but for fans of modus operandi era photek, pyramid is an essential tune. on the flip we have oshun, another track from ku:palm this time remixed by beneath, a producer that began making waves last year with a series of 12 inches on his own label, no symbols and a cracking mix for fact mag. he has gone on to release the illusions ep on dusk & blackdowns keysound recordings, as well as a 12 inch on pinchs influential tectonic recordings. mixing the darkest elements of funky, dub and syncopated grime with a distinctly uk edge, beneaths complex layered beats result in a truly unique sound that is a perfect matched to remix fellow experimentalist photek. a young producer that clearly knows his shit, beneath is a breath of fresh air.

a time machine appeared to us recently in a cloud of smoke and a giant portal of light. out of the portal a smoking piece of futuristic metal emerged and fell onto our floor. closer examination revealed it to be a time capsule sent from the future. a message from the year 2043, it contained diagrams of futuristic machines from what looks to have been the studio sessions of the recordings presented here. here is what we found, a 2 track ep (plus remixes) from artists from the future. recordings made 21 years from now but from artists who you may have already heard of today.

photek stands mercilessly on the edge. a sonic scientist, pushing both his sounds and fans expectations to the outermost limits since 1994, he floods the footnotes of electronica like mp3s clutter up your hard drive. 2011 saw him drop a series of sounds that reflect the truest perception of him. driven by his years of studio discipline, sharpened by an acute awareness that he will be received by the heads that know him well and ears that dont know him at all. destination tomorrow: photeks decorated past and diligent work ethic leads us here. the new music you have heard from photek in 2011 is yet another chapter in a life spent overdosing on sonic nuances and boundary testing. in the past 12 months his new material has been remixed by the brightestyoung stars of dance music - boddika, falty dl, addison groove and breach to name a few. in turn, photek has remixed for the likes of moby, jess mills, distance, ray lamontagne and was part of daft punks tron remixed package - for which he has been nominated for a grammy. his newly re-launched label, photek productions, has this year released the >avalanche ep< which garnered international support from tastemakers such as benji b, gilles peterson, skream, annie mac, zane lowe and more, and the >aviator ep<.

two collaborations between two highly respected producers. photeks >closer< marked the 50th release on pinchs tectonic last year, and some time in the studio together has produced these standout tracks. acid reign first appeared in january on pinchs fabriclive mix compilation, his dubplate version described by fact mag as >a slow-burning half-stepper with a twisted acid melody fighting for air in an oil spill, as claustrophobic as you like, basically<. m25fm appears on photeks instalment to the highly respected dj kicks compilation series, its another acid-tinged track, taking us into much deeper territory.

jess mills is on everyones lips at the moment as she sets the barrier high with her single >vulture< – which is actually out today. having worked alongside digital soundboy main-man, james breakage, providing the vocals for his track, >fighting fire<. breakage has returned the favour by producing >vultures<. theres a moody photek re-edit on the flip, if you know what rupert parkes is capable of then you wont give this one a miss. limited to 250 vinyl.

every tune of the 12- is deeply inspired by the origins of the mid 90s melodic jungle & d n b movement, namely by the greats of that era: peshay, source direct, ltj bukem and photek. ray & karl have worked together on a number of projects over the last year, the most recent one being a split 12- on the other planet of lyon. while ray has been connected to the lo-fi house scene and acts like baltra, dj boring and dj seinfeld, karl has been more low-key, producing music that s relaxed and organic, mainly inspired by naature and the musical movement around frits wentink and max graef. for this release they worked closely together, decided to stray off their usual paths and combined their different styles to form a well-rounded record.

the debut vinyl release from label supervoid records, out august 21st, 2017, has already made some waves, with two of its three tracks finding their way onto several prominent mixes, including ben sims -run it red- and resident advisor s 513th podcast, performed by markus suckut. the release has also been given the nod by other heavy-hitters, including members of the droid behavior crew and a berghain resident. label owner and artist dustmite has been remixed by audio injection and long ago, distance. his track bare appeared on photek s dj kicks.

after a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what ldr stands for ? new, original music from hardworking, young artists. after the success of datas >blowpipe< on ld5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like metalheadz, critical, revolution and tempa, data brings us a grimy gem in the form of >liberty city blues<. incident from hungary and paul sg from austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent knowledge magazine cover cd mix.
>liberty city blues< is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early photek or source direct. from the outset the tune just bubbles with menace and keeps on building and evolving throughout. a pure bass-heavy slice of proper jungle.
>autumn drops< is a soulful roller that shows that this crew are ones to watch in 2010. full of melancholy, icy vibes and a subtle basslinethat gets right under your skin, this track is a firm favourite for this year.

the fourth and final sampler for the way of the samurai represents the full stylistic diversity of the label samurai music. hobzee & zyon base were asked to design a tune specifically for this project and when 1000 paper cranes arrived in the inbox it was obvious they had a very firm grasp on the sound the label was looking for. fluid, gliding vibes and a subtle sexy vocal ease the tune into its rhythm. the breaks and bass provide a step reminiscent of photek to the eastern sonics that unwind themselves around the rhythm.

final song goes to the very heart of musics spiritual dimension by asking a number of musicians to select their ideal last song, either to serenade their final moments or to memorialize them after the fact. the participating artists deserve to be commended for their openness: theyre responding to one of the most personal questions one could ask. (several of those approached declined to take part- taboos are taboos, after all.)
