following contributions by dj deep and dj hell, tresor records are proud to present the third instalment in their kern mix-series, this time headed by berlin based producer objekt, his first release following his 2014 debut album flatland for pan. in keeping with the series mission of showcasing a more personal approach to mixing hertz describes his process as such, kern vol. 3 is made up of tracks that i know i will play and love for years to come. some of these records have been in my bag for years others are almost as new to me as they are to you. a handful are by lesser known artists whom i admire and who i think deserve wider recognition. planned, recorded, embellished, reworked, tweaked and chiselled away at over a period of 6 months, the mix was gradually carved out in a way that makes use of new and old techniques alike, presenting itself primarily as a dj mix but settling in a sweet spot between live recording and studio trickery. the tracklist spans styles, decades and bpms in an attempt to craft a mix thats unpredictable and compelling in equal measure Ð one that draws from the more adventurous corners of my club sets, but above all, one thats a pleasure to listen to.

jaki liebezeit, der masterdrummer, hatte seine freude an der tatsache, dass der trommelbau seit menschengedenken sich nicht wesentlich verändert hat. ob ein fell jetzt mit schnüren oder mit schrauben auf dem kessel gespannt wird, ob es ein natur- oder plastikfell ist - das prinzip bleibt dasselbe: beide umschließen einen hohlraum, ohne den es keinen klang gäbe (man stelle sich eine trommel vor, die innen drin mit lehm gefüllt wäre.) so ähnlich ist auch die rhythmus-auffassung. das Überflüssige fällt weg. dir leere mitte erscheint. das unsichtbare ist das entscheidende. alle stücke auf der zweiten ep von drums off chaos kreisen um diese leere mitte. im zentrum ist - nichts. hier geht es um abstrakte, groovende trommel-musik. die rhythmen sind so weit auf ihren elementaren kern reduziert, dass sie zwar eindeutig singulär, aber auch allgemeingütig verstanden werden können. es kommt etwas zum vorschein, das allgemeinen gesetzen wie gravitation, ergonomik und akustik folgt. „spiel, was die trommel will,“ war einer von jakis sätzen. das hat drums off chaos sich mit ihm zusammen zu herzen genommen. im zentrum stehen rhythmen, die auf einfachen zahlenverhälnissen gründen, um ihren reichtum aus sich selbst heraus zu entfalten.

omar di bongo ist ein audio-visuelles projekt, das video-feedback von hugo saugier mit zwei figuren der französischen underground-techno-szene verschmilzt: somaticae (in paradisum, tanzprocesz ...) bekannt für seinen dark cutting-techno, und c_c (small but hard, kvitnu ...) meister der feedbacks, und wilde analoge industrielle beats. ihre musik verbindet industrielle musik mit tribalen polyrhythmen und lässt uns in eine bestimmte art von psychedelia eintauchen, halluziniert oder demenziert. ihre produktionen bringen techno zu seinem kern zurück, der trance-dimension, die in vielen modernen musiken dieses genres oft vergessen wird.

die brandneue ep -have you been there, have you seen it-, die nun bei ninja tune erscheint, findet eine helena hauff in atemberaubender form vor, die vier geschmeidige, muskulöse und unverhohlen dunkle analoge exkursionen präsentiert, die sie in ihrem studio in hamburg aufgenommen hat. eine sehr respektierte produzentin zum einen, besteht andererseits der kern von helena hauffs persönlichkeit aus ihrer hingabe und ihrem offenbar angeborenen talent für das dj-handwerk. gefeiert für ihre fähigkeiten und ihre einzigartige auswahl, erlebte sie in den vergangenen zwei jahren einen kometenhaften aufstieg, u.a. mit einer bbc radio 1 residency, mit ihrem ersten bbc radio 1 essential mix oder mit dem jetzt schon legendären b2b-set auf dem diesjährigen sónar mit ben ufo. zudem zierte sie u.a. das cover von crack magazine, dj mag oder der zweiten ausgabe des deutschen bookazines vinyl stories.

es sind inzwischen vier jahre vergangen, seit dem die amerikanische hip hop-supergroup la coka nostra ihr letztes album veröffentlichte. nach dem ausstieg des ehemaligen house of pain-frontmannes everlast aus familiären gründen übernahm der ehemalige non phixion-frontmann ill bill das zepter. zum kern der gruppe gehören außerdem slaine, danny boy und dj lethal (beide ehemals house of pain). als gäste sind sick jacken, rite hook, q-uniq, sadie vada, vinnie paz (jedi mind tricks), apathy und skam2 geladen. für die beats sorgen dj lethal (house of pain / limp bizkit), statik selektah, marco polo, salam wreck und chumzilla.

zeit ist ein fließendes konzept in der welt von phoria. das trio im kern des englischen quintetts - trewin howard (gesang & produktion), jeb hardwick (gitarre & visuals) und ed sanderson (keyboard & vocals) - kennt sich bereits seit über zwanzig jahren, seit der grundschule, wo sie klassische gitarre, cello und violine lernten. nach jahren der musikalischen selbstfindung und des gemeinsamen Älterwerdens, wuchs daraus das selbstkreierte schalllabor namens -phoria-, dem sich tim douglas (bass & synths) und seryn burden (schlagzeug) anschlossen. etliche singles, gesammelt auf zwei eps, hat die band bisher veröffentlicht und zeigte dabei bereits ihr vorliebe für filmmusik und orchestralen post-rock sowie ausladende, auch visuell eindrucksvolle klanglandschaften. textlich befasst sich die band vor allem mit den tiefen der menschlichen psyche und ihrer auswirkung auf unser handeln. “volition” ist das debütalbum der band und erscheint jetzt bei humming records.

typisch für das label triangle: entfesselte beats, ausgefeilte soundscapes, abstrakte electronica. was das warp label vor jahren mit der veröffentlichung der werke von künstlern wie autechre startete, wird nun im geiste fortgeführt. da der amerikanische hip hop-markt gerade nach abstrakten beats sucht, sind die veröffentlichung von triangle auch jenseits von avantgarde-zirkeln sehr angesagt. brod ma mit *daze* machen jedenfalls keine gefangenen. bei *molten brownian motion* ist das rhythmusgeflecht dann derart verdichtet, bis nur noch beats das klangbild dominieren. bei *dim returns* ist eine wundersame melodieführung der kern der komposition. aufregend, elektronisch, elektrisierend!
