debut lp by fools

todd osborn returns to spectral sound in his osborne guise with his first release on on the label since 2013 s hold up (feat. joe goddard). fools finds osborn in his best self, as a shapeshifter bringing together strands of various genres. the title track is a lesson in house reduction, while -different- is a chunk of bassline-led techno. on the b-side, -back whenever- kicks off in proto-idm electro form, all melody and light, and -integrate- slows it down to a walking pace for a dash of synth funk.

wrapping up the summer with a bit of a 90s throwback number by st. david, &#8203,, * fools jam* . the ep opens with the titual track, a crunchy, crisp deep house burner, and moves on, with night lovers, into speedier, smoother floor-filling fodder that’s all wiggling, weaving pads and synth leads. the b is a little gentler and more contemplative, but no less melodious dream it (emphasi mix) is a playful yet gauzy piano-led tune that serenades the listener, and la luna (spiritual dub) is a tranquil ditty that serenely glides off into the distance. a calming, mellow conclusion to a particularly emotive 12inch.

for our next fina records release we welcome french native closed paradise… closed paradise has been on our radar for a while after hearing releases on fools & fables, kolour ltd & whiskey disco. his unique (and mainly vinyl only) productions have featured heavily in our sets over the last few years, if you are familiar with his vibe you’ll know his tracks have a certain french finesse, and these are no exception. so we are extremely happy to finally put this out and add closed paradise praise ep to the fina family.

helsinkis lauri saine is the storyteller for this, the third chapter of fools & fables. pleasingly his irresistible releases dont come along all that often, but when they do, they justifiably make serious waves. small remedies, takes us on a journey to a side of saine we seldom see. first things first, blush cuts a breezy, cheerful path through a warm analogue space, with the mid-tempo throb of sampled rhythms to keep you from drifting too far off course. casual wears altogether looser pants as we just bob to and fro in a hammock while rum-soaked session players jam away in a distant speakeasy. the tropical breeze blows free through leisure song too, as we begin to get the impression finland might actually be a small pacific island.

montreals shashu has quickly become a force on the beat scene with an inventive, muscular new take on dance music. after making waves with his debut fools gold ep thru da night earlier this year (an immediate dj favorite and bbc radio pick) he delivers an amped up sequel today in the form of pwrfnk, slapping futuristic, heavy bass over 80s-inspired midnight electro. this limited double 12 inch combines both eps and includes a fold-out poster.

sweet valley is nathan williams (wavves) and his brother kynan, two bongwater-soaked beat geniuses making rap instrumentals that feel like melted playstation games. mndr is a one-of-a-kind artist and songwriter versed in britney and breakcore in equal measure. put them all together with producer peter wade and dance 4 a dollar is the result, a darkly catchy cali masterpiece. sv chop up strip club 808s and woozy synths like they are reclaiming trip hop for the dj mustard era, while mndr explores the underbelly of radio songcraft, finding the creepiness inside champagne anthems and coating tales of teenage nihilists with rihanna-worthy ear candy. decay never sounded so sweet.
