get physical presents: cocada is a brand new compilation put together in cooperation with the brazil music conference, and is compiled and mixed by local and long time star leo janeiro. all bar one of the 14 tracks is exclusive, and all come from exciting brazilian talents, making for a great window into the scene. Ôcocada is a word that evokes strong childhood memories for all brazilians. it is a delicious coconut sweet which, says the label, is a little surprise in the middle of an ordinary day that makes you appreciate all the good things of brazil. as such, it is a perfect name for this selection which features tracks from big and emerging names alike. under the name cocada well be launching music and organizing workshops and parties, in order to bring greater visibility to the electronic music being produced in brazil and throughout latin america, says get physicals managing director roland leesker. our desire is to create an international platform both for emerging underground producers and well-known artists, a&r manager matt plessis adds. cocada is very sweet and we want to give the world an opportunity to taste some of those powerful delights that have been produced in brazil,. among the albums more established producers is hnqo, who runs the playperview label and has released on hot creations. his track Ôsorrow is a moody cut with a shapeshifting lead synth that brings a zoned out feel.

with their first collective release frahm and müller have built a world where modern classical and electronica collide creating an intoxicating and delicious collection of songs. primarily a pianist nils frahm provides evidence with 7fingers that he can effortlessly turn electric throwing in loops, samples and glitches to accompany and showcase müller on cello. anne müller, a renowned musician noted for her work with the wolf-ferrari-ensemble, phillip boa and recent tours with agnes obel, proves an amp musical partner for frahm.

berlin based pardon moi, consisting of james brook and thomas freudenthal, makes music that would fit perfect as a soundtrack for a ride in a ferrari gto convertible, or on a transatlantic flight on a concorde. unfortunately, vintage ferraris are ridiculously expensive and concords are taken out of flight but still the music creates an air of luxury and decadence for you to fill your lungs and air with. this 7inch release on hoga nord rekords is the first on the label but the duo have released material on nein records and vocoder electro.

asan has been making music for some time. he is geographically the closest artist to lampuka records, yet lamp004 has taken us the longest to complete thus far. we had hoped this to be asans debut release but we were pipped to the post whilst he was on his travels. gladly though we have what we think is a superfluous release…and well worth the wait. no remixes here, just four solid bangers.

did you ever hear about christian strobe? no? hardly surprising, cause its a brand new solo-project by christian schnall, one half of disco trash music (maximal electro) and spruce (dreamy shoegaze). the german guy is musically rooted in the 80ies and early 90ies and as christian strobe, he combines airy new wave pop, retro-futurism with a pinch of house. the original mix of >midnight call< is full of magic, desire and an airy atmosphere, but still a simple pop song. the nightdrive version is recommended for nightly rides with your ferrari testarossa through big city lights. the italo-disco-pop-masters from codebreaker gives the original a funky french taste and reknowned keenhouse conjured a good-feeling remix with lovley summer-piano-chords. midnight call? you could name it sunshine call! in a more and more digital environment, the warmth of the analog vhs-tape version gives you the relaxing mood you need. the placid >lonesome astronaut< completed the debut-ep and takes you to a cosmic trip though time and space. stay tuned for the upcoming full-length album called >heartworks< in autumn 2011.

there are few artists making seriously great music while not taking themselves too seriously: that difficult feat is one rarely attempted and even less often successfully carried out. benoit & sergio have seemingly effortlessly managed to pull off that contradictory trick, producing songs that sometimes seem like musical open letters: editorials narrated in the voices of unidentified, yet totally recognizable colorful characters, read aloud against a backdrop of beautifully lush, warm and sensuous electronic pop music. the unexpected juxtaposition of such pristine production and playful lyricism — first exhibited on 2009s highly praised <i>what ive lost</i> ep, which included the brilliantly sardonic single >full grown man< – exemplifies why benoit & sergio are one of the most unique and interesting outfits in dance music. its good news, then, that the washington, d.c./berlin-based outfits eagerly expected dfa debut maintains both the charm and expert craftsmanship of its predecessors. single >boy trouble< (the titular counterpoint to >full grown man<) launches the ep with all manner of reasons to take to the dancefloor: an exigent beat, a beckoning synthline, a bassline of understated funk. sergio lethargically sings about girls, making note of both their ups and the downsides, without the hindrance of subtlety. >i love girls/with legs like a ferrari< he states before noting (bemoaning?) the fact that >you need poetry to turn these girls on.< its a song for the best part of the night, full of compulsive rhythms and a climax that builds on sparkly synths. the accompanying remix from visionquest — the detroit-bred, berlin-based label led by producers seth troxler, ryan crosson, lee curtiss and shaun reeves — amps things up, making the beat a more prominent, driving and club banging force. the flipside features >full grown man< and >what ive lost<, which reveal themselves to be worth more than a few revisits.
