jaunt records 10 year celebrations are spanning a series of 12inches that feature a broad spectrum of artists searching for the ultimate deep techno fix. the four contenders that occupy this sea release all have their own agenda, but they sit together perfectly. hiver weaves illustrious pads in between nimble electro drums and bubbling acid bass, while artefakt creates eerie, fractured acid meanderings to send a shiver down your spine. hinode does some deft break choppage to create a dreamy trip for the up all night crew, and then region rolls the record out on an emotive tip while keeping the rhythm section pumped up for the floor.

african scream contest’ is the third release by the analog africa label. the project initially took off in august 2005 when label owner and vinyl collector samy ben redjeb arrived in cotonou, benin, “without any special expectations, just hoping to lay my hands on few good records - what i found in the process cannot really be described in words-. this first trip was followed by eight more to the region. thirty months and few thousand records later analog africa proudly presents this 14-track compilation. redjeb conducted 16 interviews in various cities in benin and togo with artists, producers and sound engineers to reconstruct the history of the 70s music scene for the 44 pages booklet which also features many rare photographs directly received from the artists. delve into the forgotten raw and psychedelic afro sounds from 70s benin and togo and experience the african scream contest. very, very limited copies in, and this might notcome in anymore.... tip!

newcomer region takes no time to get his credentials across, and this debut ep is all you could possibly ask for from an artist making their way up the food chain. coming though on the young jaunt label, region dishes out some seriously magnificent dub techno lashings here, with the opener -subline- being something of rough gem, the remix comes from lies-associate voiski, and the frenchman strips the whole thing down to a deeper, murkier tone that we ve come to associate him to. -borders-, on the b-side, is a supremely deep and meditative house track with a touch of the shed in it, and main man basic soul unit drops his version of the tune, a broken beat assemblage with that same dubwise feel that wraps the groove of the original cut.

iperborea (in english hyperborea) is a legendary land, home of the also mythical people of the hyperboreans. in the myths of greek religion, the hyperboreans were a people who lived in a distant land to the north of greece. this region was a perfect country, illuminated by the shining sun for six months of the year. the ep opens with the track -nuda veritas-, characterized by sound textures that recall an aquatic and evanescent environment, giving the track a charge of mystery and the unknown. then the journey goes to -iperborea-, which gives the album its title, there are strong references to the power of the sun and the mythical people of the hyperboreans. the first is given by the constant presence of a modulated niose that simulates the solar wind, that is a flow of particles emitted by the sun. on the other hand, the reference to the mythical people is made through a pressing and epic groove, and by the contrast of these two elements with a pad/stab synth that transits in the middle of the track. the latter outlines a dreamlike and suspended atmosphere that praises this distant and legendary land that was iperborea (hyperborea). among with these original tracks, the ep also containes remixes by scope and laertes. laertes’ rexmis is focused on soft and gentle mysterious mood while scope’s one is more focused on mysterious but powerful which makes audience imagine somewhat aspects of a destructive god. together they are making a perfect pair match for this ep>

catch recordings return with their 13th release, this time from dj najaora. hes an emerging talent from the ever growing techno region in georgia who s mature, fully formed sound is showcased here across three innovative left-field techno & electro tracks. the excellent night dreamers takes the a1 spot. its an analogue electro cut throughout. with forceful broken drums accompanied by electric lead lines that provide a powerful energy for the dance floor. space call is a more cerebral and less dance floor affair that has you day dreaming amongst the meandering pads and classic detroit electro vibes. a soft acid line runs throughout, while the whole cuts creates nostalgia of old warp records last of all simulaq which takes the b-side has wide and vast rubber kicks alongside booming bass. making this side a merge of bass and electro. trippy stabs and dark energy pervades the whole thing, making it track for the late hours. while 13 is an unlucky number for some, this certainly doesn t seem to be the case for catch recordings.

duat (pronounced do-aht) was the realm of the dead in ancient egyptian mythology. the deity osiris was believed to be the lord of the underworld since he personified rebirth and life after death, being the first mummy as depicted in the osiris myth. the underworld was also the resi-dence of various other gods along with osiris. the duat was the region through which the sun god re traveled from west to east each night, and it was where he battled apep, who embodied the primordial chaos which the sun had to defeat in order to rise each morning and bring order back to the earth. it was also the place where people’s souls went after death for judgement, though that was not the full extent of the afterlife. burial chambers formed touching-points be-tween the mundane world and the duat, and the akh, the effectiveness of the dead, could use tombs to travel back and forth from the duat.

the 3rd release on alma negra records is dedicated to the music of eritrea, a small (in african terms, that is) country nestled in between sudan and ethopia on the south end of the red sea. drawing from its native spiritual roots as well as the christian and islamic influences of conquering factions, this multiethnical country is home to an amazingly diverse plethora of cultures and musical styles. on this ep, we are happy to showcase the music of the saho people from the region of zula, which is located in between the coastal lowlands close to the dahlak archipelago. the word saho roughly translates (translated?) as nomad, pointing towards a lifestyle where tradition and culture is being passed on orally over generations. the exact source for these edits of the saho sound are thus lost to the murky depths of history, as they are based on traditional folksongs

ayuune sule brings the soul into kologo power. in kumasi, the second city of ghana and capitol of the ashanti region, ayuune sule is the main kologo star. the most famous kologo player these days in the whole of ghana and abroad is king ayisoba. together with king ayisoba, guy one, atongo zimba and sambo, he represents the generation that broke kologo music outside of the north east region of ghana. in europe we know ayuune sule as a member of king ayisoba’s band and as a solo artist who often opens up for his shows.

rather than rely on their usual full band, live performance, one-room live single recording session, the making of ‘dragonz’ was a departure for the apples. a multi-studio project spanning three continents, they assembled new instrumental tracks based on loops created in the studio and presented them to a wide-ranging selection of vocal collaborators to complete the picture with, and applied this method to the capturing of longstanding live favourites as well. the concept of a “vocal album” was implemented on non-vocalist songs as well, treating the omnipresent turntables’ sample work not as the central element to the band, but rather its frontman. though containing disparate influences, guests and production methods, ‘dragonz’ is undeniably apples, might be their most focused lp to date, and it is certainly their most middle-eastern. elements of the region’s indigenous genres have always been present in the band’s work, but never has their influence been as pronounced.

acclaimed malian musician sidi touré returns with his fourth album, toubalbero. named after the large traditional drum used to gather people in the malian region of gao, toubalbero is a danceable, dynamic, and despite the region’s signifcant political challenges, joyous album. the double 12 inch comes in a gatefold sleeve with download code included.

for our second ep, we are shifting from manila, philippines, to our other home city, bangkok, the thai kingdom’s capital. hailing from here is dott, one of three founders of more rice, a truly home grown bangkok electronic producer, dj and the talent behind mah noi ep. dott already has a number of releases under his belt and is now a regular on the asian circuit, playing gigs around the region. at 26 years old this is quite impres- sive and we are very proud to be releasing his first pressed record under more rice.
mah noi ep embodies dott’s sound, which is deep, driven and moody, whilst keeping an organic twist throughout and clearly inspired by his home country, the key to setting the release apart and making it tasty for more rice. the careful and precise placement of vintage thai samples gives it that extra flavour and mystery that can engulf the listeners and dancers, whilst the remix by eric volta truly transports you to another dimension.

for the past 15 years the tanzanian megalopolis of dar es salaam has had one of the most exciting underground electronic music scenes in east africa. a constellation of micro-scenes from mchiriku, sebene and segere all the way to its latest mutation of singeli that finally after years of lurking in the underground has exploded into the mainstream and taken over bongo flava as the music of choice amongst tanzania s youth. born in the sprawling working class neighborhoods of tandale and manzese, singeli s signature sound consists of fast paced frantic loops interlocking with each other, with influences from zanzibars tarab music all the way to south african afro-house coupled with mc s who often spit satirical lyrics about the challenges facing tanzania s youth, from police corruption to the complications of dating girls when you are broke. if there is one studio that stands out amongst the hundreds that dot dar es salaam s musical landscape it is sisso records. centered around producers, bwax, sisso, bampa pana and yung keyz morento and mc s dogo niga and makavelli, they were early pioneers of the singeli sound. whilst some singeli artists have begun fusing their music with more traditional tanzanian hip hop, sisso have remained uncompromising in their sound, always raw, fast with a punk diy aesthetic that can at times verge on noise and gabber, to produce a spell binding music that is like no other sound system culture in the region.

for this album, ebo joined forces with 12-piece band ‘the pelikans’ — from the cape coast region of ghana — led by bessa simmona, with rhythm guitarist fifi orleans lindsay. a genuine ‘holy-grail’ of ghanaian music and one of ebo’s most saught-after.
the album was released on the small abookyi label. named after a nightclub they played in called pelikans, and sung in english and fante, this was the first album where ebo sang on tracks, such as the classic ‘come along’, on which he also plays keyboard. this song clearly defined a new direction in highlife and has become a ghanaian funk anthem. ‘come along’ formed the basis of sadat x’s ‘remember that’ hip hop jam from 2011.

tafi allstars is a collaborative recording project between optimo music artists thomas lea clarke (mr tc) and conal blake (whilst) and members of the tafi cultural institute of tafi atome, ghana. after having previously visited tafi atome to take part in the music of the volta region study tours that are organised by tci in collaboration with green door studio, clarke and blake secured funding from creative scotland to travel back to tafi in november 2016 to record a mini-album of tracks that blend the rhythms and melodies of traditional borborbor and agbadza drumming forms and ewe songwriting with electronic instrumentation and dub recording techniques.

repress - without dl code - susso, aka bassist / producer huw bennett, creates music inspired by, and directly sampling, the magnificent sounds of the mandinka people, recorded during a recent trip to gambia. initially travelling with the aim of gaining perspective as a musician and to discover a new world of music first hand, huw found himself humbled by such a welcoming community of artists, mostly belonging to the celebrated susso and kuyateh griot families.
the tracks are composed entirely from original source material, field recordings and huw’s talents as a multi-instrumentalist, performing tuned percussion from the region including the mandinka balafon, kutiringding drum, aswell drawing on his skill as a professional upright / electric bassist. the music produced has a contemporary electronic sound, whilst still paying homage to a traditional gambian aesthetic. keira (meaning peace) guides the listener through huw’s journey up the river gambia, being welcomed into remote dusty villages, where your people are the most important thing in life

all source material recorded in gran paradiso, july 2015 engineered at odd phasing and echoes, amsterdam nl photography bjnilsen bjnilsen is a composer and sound artist based in amsterdam. his work primarily focuses on the sounds of nature and how they affect humans. recent work has explored the urban acoustic realm and industrial geography in the arctic region of norway and russia. his original scores and soundtracks have featured in theatre, dance performances and film. celebrating 27 years as a recording artist massif trophies is the first solo release for editions mego. in 2015 he set off on a month long hiking trip in gran paradiso to explore the acoustic environments in the alpine landscape. drawn to the monotonous and physical effort that mountains and high altitudes contributes, this became one of the main inspirations for the album, reflecting upon the perception of the landscape during several hours of physical difficulty, let alone rapid weather changes, horizontal thunderstorms and rock avalanches. it is also about the scope of details and perception of the path and the myth of the mountain as the accursed or sacred place. the five pieces contains narratives based on experiences and recordings from the trip.

ltd repress !! sloboda reissue of this rare gem from the heydays of adelaide techno. originally released as a one-sided vinyl in 1999, the record fell into obscurity largely due to a great number of damaged copies being discarded. recovered from the original dat recording, outer rim has been carefully re-mastered and cut inside-out with reference to the original pressing.

second installment of spanish imprint de profundiis, this time signed by madrid s duo uanamani in which they tell us a musical story about the mysterious underground labyrinth of hawara. a gigantic ancient construction underneath a necropolis in the region of el fayum, egypt. quoted by many chroniclers of antiquity, is believed to be a monument of colossal dimensions, and probably the key that would prove the existence of an unknown precedent civilization with a few vestiges around the area.
the record is focused around 4 subterranean tracks which alternate between intense moments of epic mythology and more ambiental and introspective passages, with sound artifacts found in the various secret chambers and pharaonic tombs. a journey with analogic vs digital rhythms, dreamy pads, minimalistic and ritual details, enigmatic drones, mummified keys and synths submerged in millennial history and archaic poetry. an experience for the intrepid travelers of the past and future times.

related artists red axes, lena willikens, khidja, autarkic, boot & tax key selling points il est vilaine arent from brittany, but they sure are tricksters. the francophiles among you might have caught on to the corny pun in their name (beating a certain presidential candidate to the punch all while turning the name of the pastoral ile-et-vilaine region into, literally, hes a nasty woman) but the real takeaway is that these born-and-bred parisians dont take themselves too seriously especially in an era in which there is much too much of that happening.

though quality techno is regularly associated with the colder climates of berlin and detroit, the recent developments happening on the iberian peninsula have been hard to ignore. one of the region’s more interesting and consistent producers in this decade has been maceo plex, owner of the ellum audio label. armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of signature club sounds, and with an ability to investigate ‘darker’ side of modern life (a tendency that can be heard especially well on past plex-produced tracks like “conjure balearia”), plex has located the “goldilocks zone” between funk liberation and mechanical control. mastering this balancing act is a skill that separates the best producers from the legions of also-rans: it shines through in his back catalog and is back in full force for his new “tesseract” ep on ellum.

death waltz is thrilled to announce an lp/dvd combo of abdullah, a short film released by ne er do well films, for record store day 2017. it’s a dark tale concerning the largely unknown underbelly of the city. abdullah is a lonely man, a turkish mini-cab driver in london who has been forgotten - by the city, by society, and by his own community. when abdullah picks up a new fare one night - a troubled young man who finally takes notice of him - things take a dark turn. as the two men make an undeniable connection, the question becomes clear: can abdullah change his fate or is he destined to be swallowed by his own loneliness?

visions congo is yet another moniker from discrepant’s head honcho, goncalo f cardoso, taking africa as a starting point to evoke the memories and re-imagined experiences of his 6-month stay there in 2015.
most of the recordings and compositions were done in the great lakes of africa region of uganda, congo (drc), tanzania as well as the island of zanzibar.

for its ninth release, italian label spazio disponible looks to countryman marco shuttle for a first full length. systhema comes three years after his last album on his own eerie label and finds him again focussing on an absorbing ambient techno style across eight enthralling cuts. shuttle layers sound in subtle ways and has a meticulous attention to detail that results in a cinematic techno style that is cavernous and hypnotizing. always operating in a region where ambient, techno and heady soundtracks become one, with this album marco shuttle once again confirms he is one of the finest sonic sculptors out there.

before he was nigeria’s self-proclaimed mr lover boy, felix lebarty was an upcoming musician in the country’s edo-delta region. his big brother, aigbe, was a legendary highlife bandleader, but felix paid his dues playing guitar with thony shorby nwenyi and the collection of stars, along with fellow star mighty flames bassist, willy nfor. perversely, girls for sale was released after lover boy, the slick disco album that cemented his place in nigerian music history. it is a collection of tracks lebarty made early in his career, when his music was rawer and his pickup lines less sophisticated and less practised.

10th release on fasrat is the debut record of mr yo so hailing from the west pomerania region of poland (same as his label mate das komplex), rafal reich is an experienced musician. from playing piano in modern jazz groups to woodwinds in a brass band and synths in his home studio, his music displays rare sensibility and an ear for lovely melodies. delicious brings together six tracks recorded during last few years, from dreamy new age-ish soundtracks to proper balearic sunrise/sunset anthems, with obvious echoes of 70s lords of synth. cheesy, yes, but its this kind of rich, mature, delicious cheese we all like, dont we?

it’s the forgotten place. lying between the mountains of northwest tunisia and the algerian border, the bargou valley and the village named after it lie isolated, away from the world. it’s poor, barren country, but standing apart, bargou has developed its own culture that had never been documented until nidhal yahyaoui began the task. born in the valley, he grew up hearing his parents and family sing the songs that belong to the region, and he was determined that the music and traditions shouldn’t slip away into obscurity. with targ, the album he’s made with his band bargou 08, yahyaoui has perfectly fused the past and the present to place bargou on the map.

cougouyou ist ein plattenladen in perpignan, südfrankreich, sowie ein sublabel von staubgold. auf diesem veröffentlicht markus dettmer limitierte 7’’es mit regionalbezug. gewöhnlich kommen südfranzösische bzw. katalonische bands mit exklusiven neuen stücken zum zug. -lettre À monsieur le chef de gare de la tour de carol- macht davon eine doppelte ausnahme, denn weder stammt die 1939 geborene avantgarde-musikerin, autorin und schauspielerin brigitte fontaine aus der region, noch ist ihr musique-concrète-stück neu. es erschien bereits 1969 auf dem album -comme À la radio- und collagiert verfremdete tonfetzen des bahnhofsvorstehers von latour-de-carol, einem auf 1200 meter höhe gelegenen Örtchens in den pyrenäen. die single wird durch zwei tracks des in perpignan ansässigen minimalkomponisten monsieurdurand ergänzt. seine beiden stücke -un mauvais champignon- und -la nausée (extrait)- stehen ebenfalls der musique concrète nahe und basieren auf field recordings.
