we are delighted to welcome egyptology to the hands in the dark family. the parisian duo, made up of stéphane laporte (domotic) and olivier lamm have been active since the late 90s in the french post-electronica/avant-pop scene. sur les autres mondes is inspired by a publication by french astronomer lucien rudaux (1937, larousse) in which he imagined the landscapes of other planets in our solar system through scientific descriptions. partly composed for a performance at the prestigious louvre museum in paris, the album is the band’s first full length output since 2012, and we can assure you that it has been worth the wait. their sharp ear for detail and the epic worlds evoked through the album make for an auditory voyage which is as graphic as the words inked by rudaux. the duo is bringing the 70s kosmiche genre back to life in a very fresh, bold way, offering a strong shot of pure analogue sound and a fantastic, melodic approach to synth-based ambient music.

akumandra is the mexican imprint of sainte vie. the label promotes the exceptional artists riding the sub current of multicultural electronic music and, after 3 years of sharing its music for free, it s about to release on vinyl for the first time. sainte vie s music is a prime summary of what it means to hear in a post-genre universe. as trends are quickly rendered obsolete, the accumulation of culture debris is becoming more significant in relation to the producer the ability to create a nostalgic blur through a composition of artifacts and interpretations. paying homage to this, estacion inmortal (sainte vie s first ep) produces the afterglow associated with an auditory epiphany. the combination of mellow interludes, earthy chord progressions and acoustic-synthetic equilibrium have the capacity to conquer both communal space and solitude.

label boss nachtbraker is finally making his solo debut on quartet series after a successful ep last year on heist recordings. widely known for exploring different sounds and angles with his productions, this record is the most club-orientated to date. intricate ghetto house with a slight french touch to straight up 4x4 with a pinch of jacking flavour would be an accurate description of this release. the use of 90s hip hop samples within this auditory concoction successfully highlights nachtbrakers excellent ear for detail and penchant for exciting, eclectic and downright weird changeovers. the main hitter taking over the full a side is the title track small towel people. an uplifting bass line accompanied by heated 909 percussion and a hypnotic thriving arp to seal the deal. on the flipside, youll find kippendijen on the b1. a heavyweight in the house category, some glimpses of early days jacking house and a little french touch on the filter. throw in a breakdown even houdini wouldnt be able to handle and youll find yourself putting this track on repeat. then when the needle hits the b2 groove, zomaar kicks off with an energetic mpc style breakbeat before morphing into a deep jam of lush chords and a thrusting 4x4 beat. the track closes after switching back to the first part of the record and ends in a sublimely deep and dubby breakbeat.

after releases by cez and ashac, high ends returns with an ep by thomas romain and his mother, famed free jazz pianist christine wodrascka. christine’s style is wholly unique: there are no barriers for her sonic exploration. sound matter, energy, forms, architecture and emotion all play a part in shaping the style of one the most unique musicians out there. with influences such as cecile taylor, terry riley or thelonious monk, no two wodrascka performances are the same. in his own irregular style, thomas adds a sense of swing to his mother’s improvisations. this fusion of acoustic and electronic creates wholly original experimental journeys which will delight the auditory senses of those listening.

a.r.c. soundtracks is the audio/visual project of k.craig and david armes. dereliction//mirror is the duoÕs third release, following on from a debut album, archive: volume one (little crackd rabbit) and a cassette release for sacred tapes, from a shattered beam. dereliction//mirror was created on-residency at salford s islington mill, home to gnod, sacred tapes and many other noise/experimental musicians and labels. it is an audio/visual piece that uses the semi-derelict attic spaces as both inspiration and source material. focussing on the notion of ruins and their potential for reappropriation, dereliction//mirror combines a dense, multi-layered sound-world with ritualistic visuals to create an immersive, hypnotic work. this new film and soundtrack takes us into a bleak auditory realm of post-industrial structures and traces the role of the body within these liminal spaces. strained harmonics and industrial, discordance mesh with veiled rhythms and spoken-word narrative to create a heavy, static energy to both sound and visuals.

the latest work from florian hecker a script for machine synthesis is an experimental auditory drama and a model of abstraction. a script for machine synthesis presents a complex simplicity that spirals in an unending manner as an audio image of the uncanny valley. it is the third chapter in the trilogy of text-sound pieces hecker has collaborated with the philosopher reza negarestani. a resynthesized voice outlines procedure as procedure itself unfolds. the suggestive encounter with a pink ice cube is a conceptual point of departure for a scene in which linguistic chimeras of descriptors are materialized through synthetic trophies, mental props and auditory objects. hecker presents a synthesis of the gap in the valley which we almost know. the motifs hecker has staged in the last decade, the text, the sound, the scent, the obelisk, the demon, the self, the other all appear throughout in a thorough, rigid and formal exploration. exeunt all human actors, a script for machine synthesis is an experiment in putting synthetic emptiness back into synthetic thought.
