200 copies , the label bunte kuh presents its first ep, beambender, which delights with tracks from deep house to tech house. the ep was created in collaboration with the artist debal sommer, who convinced so far with his releases on copycow and tonkind. the tracks by the zurich dj make the crowd dance and hearts beat faster. the remix on the ep is by the duo kuriose naturale, known from the label ritter butzke.

bryan hervieu s d3 elements makes a welcome return to the music fold after a longish break, and who better to pick up the reins than trinidadian deep. northern li kicks things off, and from the first note and beat, you just know that trini has brought the spiritual and percussive deepness that he is known for. this track is 6 minutes of bliss, with swirling pads and beautiful melodies running throughout. over to the b side and it s thunder claps and the spoken word of liza zayas that starts off in the beginning. liza s voice sits perfectly alongside the caribbean textures, and the driving drums that trinidadian deep is known for. bryan s labels have long been a go to for lovers of quality and sophistication and this new one is no different.

art pop meets mongolian throat singing, blade runner meets walter carlos (clockwork orange), tom dissevelt and kid baltan (bowie’s favourite band) meet tame impala. the fifth album from marsmobil has been hailed by many as their best yet. with closer ties to “minx” (2006) than the last two albums, “fairytales of the supersurvivor” returns to marsmobil’s signature strength of wondrously brilliant songs (“and the fishes in the ocean”, “shadows of the inner light”) that blend off-the-wall cinemascope sounds with dazzling beats and punchy, powerful hooks to create uniquely distinctive art pop anthems. as always with marsmobil, roberto di gioia writes, plays, sings and programs everything himself. here, as on “minx”, he’s brought in support from a fabulous singer – the very wonderful amber lin, who contributes vocals on four songs. all the cover illustrations are also by di gioia.

master of minimal wave sonics alessandro parisi has spread his full-bodied synth wares around such esteemed labels as slow motion, charlois, giallo disco, lux rec and more besides, and now he slides up to vivod with an ep of noirish fantasies you ll be hard pushed to resist. -crossfire- is the more uptempo cut, but -ravens- paints a more vivid picture of retro-fetishistic club music in dangerous places. -praying sages- goes all out on the soundtrack vibe, but not before it s been remixed by mick wills, who casually threads a driving techno undercarriage into the track to create a strangely transcendental slab of cathedral-ready body music.

bliq continues its quest to mine the deepest shades of techno with this release from iakovos, who had previously appeared on the label as lowjac and in the formidable duo deemonlover. this is sharply focused mind music layered with subtle detail and rich textures perfectly honed for hazy hours at the far reaches of the party. -singers- melds hypnotic pads with gossamer-light threads of breakbeat and warm synth pulses, while -evil flower- pushes a tougher rhythmic agenda without losing the ethereal atmosphere. -adidas people- rides on a surging kick drum pattern, but leaves ample room for a distant drone, and then -hackney tower- heads into edgier territory with all manner of obtuse angles and unnerving sound effects pivoting around the insistent drum core of the track.

this is the second release from athens isigude records and features 2 fresh, respectful mixes of the track “bar reckless”. the lyrics recall a dialogue between her and a monk whom she met at the bar and asked “what are you doing here old man? this is no place for a saint to be”. on remixing duties we have rising greek producer zaq who takes the greek folk epirotic rhythm deep into a truly aegean balearic beat on the a-side while on the flip side he brings some dubby acidic beats.

louie vega re-ignites the disco classic “dance (disco heat)” by sylvester grammy awarding winning producer & 5 time grammy nominated louie vega continues to send dance floors into a peak hour frenzy with his remixes of disco classics on nervous records. the inspiration to delve into masters from this era began when he started remixing masters from the sam records catalogue, which is owned by nervous records, and with whom louie has a long history going back to nervous early 90’s origins. louie is that unique producer who has had success in multiple genres of music including house, r&b, & freestyle and he has brought that talent to help re-ignite new york disco classics like vicky d’s -this beat is mine- and convertion’s -let’s do it- featuring leroy burgess, as well as charting topping disco hits from john davis & the monster orchestra -bourgie bourgie- & -up jumped the devil-. this time, louie put his focus on a track outside of the sam records catalogue, and one that was an international disco hit that also crossed over to becoming a 1978 pop hit, namely sylvester / dance (disco heat). using elements from the 1978 version and combining them with his own original musical and percussion contributions, along with new vocal performances from renowned singer cindy mizelle, louie has refashioned and reignited this 39 year-old production into a 2018 club anthem.

as ever, the next project on opilec music is one with a rich back story this time paying homage to a very specific disco scene of the early 80s: it finds label boss i-robots turning out one of his brilliant reconstructions, namely of a classic and cult track by one hit wonders ahzz. this track was first released on land of hits, a label run by peter brown (who also wrote -material girl- for madonna) and michael campbell and has now been officially licensed for this reissue by opilec music. the track, new york s movin was huge on the new york disco scene and was played by the likes of david mancuso at the loft, larry levan at the paradise garage and by nicky siano at studio 54, but continued to be a big hit with modern new york tastemakers kenny dope, dj spinna, danny krivit and his body & soul party crew well into the 90s, as well as with stars like motor city drum ensemble and bulljun. i-robots is a notorious producer and record collector with a vast understanding of the history of house and disco and his version combines an original vocal and instrumental version into something really magical. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take i) is a jangling, organic and lose limbed disco number with a funky drum line, soul in its bones and plenty of lovably rough percussion, clicks and drums. a retro and impassioned vocal line adds flair to the track at the midpoint just before that groove kicks once more. this version is featured on the new i-robots - reconstructions 2007-2017 10th year anniversary release. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take ii) is then just as emotive and outgoing but after the break has more of a focus on funk. this is a huge party starting track filled with feel good vibes and once again proves opilec music work on only the most special projects.

carl gari is a group of three from munich: jonas yamer, till funke and jonas friedlich. they released their well received and idiosyncratic debut (npr mentioned it as one of the 50 best albums in 2016) on the trilogy tapes, for which they collaborated with egyptian singer and spoken word artist abdullah miniawy. for the second release on permanent vacation they perfected their unique blend of psychedelic ingredients, dubbed out drums, drony sounds and a general hazyness. the mystic chants of abdullah, who is also featured on two tracks, weave themselves into the bands lively sound texture. apart from that carl gari showcase the diversity of their analogue driven and melodic approach to electronic music through four beautifully detailed tracks.

blurt are perhaps the act who have played live at optimo more than any other. active for close to 40 years they are one of the uk’s all time great acts, phenomenal live and on record and supremely underrated. blurt mainman ted milton is a living legend. now in his 70s but more vibrant on stage than most artists 50 years his junior, he is a man of many talents, artist, poet, musician, performer…. in 1984 he released a solo 12”, “love is like a viol&#275,nce”, a no doubt accidental dancefloor gem completely out of kilter with any other music of the era that now makes total sense in 2017. dubbed-out stabs, programmed rhythm, trademark sax squeals and a more subdued than normal vocal that is strangely reminiscent of vincent price. thee definition of a cult classic and much in demand, side a of this 12” presents the a and b side (the equally outre “it’s only recently that stalins have begun to roost”) of this mighty 12” on one side of vinyl.

2018 repress ,how much do you really know about nina kraviz? shes a russian techno dj, an accomplished producer, one of dance musics breakthrough names of the last five years. true enough, but theres so much more to her story than that. shes one of electronic musics most interesting characters, someone who has stuck to her musical guns since day one, someone who has wide-ranging roots that run deep in the past, yet shes also the embodiment of the future. her signature sound is a raw blend of house and techno with a very acidic feel. if that feels very now, kraviz has a lot to do with it, which is why she was asked to mix the latest instalment of !k7s landmark dj kicks series.

for house heads of a certain persuasion, dj duke is a name that resonates for all the right reasons. the u.s. veteran has been responsible for some of the 90’s most seminal moments, chiefly through tracks such as 12 minutes to do it (under his pleasure dome alias), party time and the prosumer-endorsed deep house classic, heard. he returns here courtesy of emerging imprint solo werks, who host his latest ep, green pastures. a momentous house-led workout, it compounds duke’s reputation as a producer of considerable panache while also acting as an auspicious start to life for the dublin based label. the title track is a grainy, old-school cut that bears all the hallmarks of a dusty analogue-jam and harks back to the days of vintage chicago with the sort of zest you’d expect from a man of duke’s credentials. the other original, skyscapes, is packed to the brim with industrial motifs and is characterised by the sort of effortlessly catchy baseline with which duke has made his name. mysterious and ethereal, it takes the listener on an uncompromising and throughly captivating house journey from the off. on the flip side, we have two stunning remixes, the first of which arrives from new jersey don, ruben candelario aka nicuri. a long-time favourite of nyc-based producers a la joey anderson, nicuri turns green pastures into a dreamy, acid-led space, adding layers of suspense and a glittering vocal intto the mix as he goes. last but not least are dublin-based producers slowburn, who serve up a stunning version of skyscapes. a carefully construed voyage into the deep, it caps off a fine ep with some aplomb.

mother of mars is the latest evolution of vito & druzzi, two new yorkers who have provided the 21st century with some of its most innovative dance music. the duo first came to fame as the rhythmic backbone of the rapture, nyc pioneers who found global fame with their angular post-punk and howling disco. since then vito & druzzi have had a prolific career as remixers and producers, producing leftfield disco killers for a range of labels including warp and throne of blood. seed 2 sky their first release as mother of mars sees the duo fuse live krautrock drums with pulsating synth loops, creating two epics of space and rhythm that owe a debt to 70s kosmische pioneers like tangerine dream.

the third outing for modern manners emerges on the back of two very strong 12inches that introduced this anonymous outfit to the world. timeless vibe continues where the last release left off, building up a wonderfully cosmic bed of processed melody under which casual hand played percussion and warm bass notes can linger. azzahar too keeps things pleasantly soporific with its gentle pace and lilting guitar refrains, and then middle east manners rounds this excellent trio of eps out with a beautifully realised swirl of sounds that find focus once a kick drum starts pulsing and the percussion starts building. quite who modern manners are is a mystery at this stage, but across these three 12inches they ve certainly made their presence felt in the softest, most laid back of ways.

rumble records present a reissue of serge gainsbourg s du jazz dans le ravin, originally released in 1966. gainsbourg, the original bad boy of french pop, the man who updated the french chanson and made it hip again infusing it with the youth culture of the late 50s and 60s, ruled by jazz, drugs, and free love. very different from his celebrated later works, the music captured on this vinyl edition finds gainsbourg mixing traditional chanson and big-band jazz rather than the avant garde pop that went on to define his career outside of france. this record presents a revealing insight into the early years of this iconic figure.

for the 4th, neo violence have kept things closer to home, concentrating on fresh european talent for the fourth instalment in the nvs series.
on the a side, two londoners deejay astral & jeals, both well known for previous output on labels such as lobster theremin and shall not fade, combine with moscow’s rising dx2ov. the b side is occupied by a good frenchman from bordeaux, jus jam, who made his first public steps on 124 recordings and his own khasia hills.

balance recording is happy to introduce you to the presencs ok kiko navvaro. this album cut out ep that has been getting great play by the like of kerri chandler and chez damier. i can show you the way, is a very strong track and .a floor filler, while tracks like -black is black- is also getting strong dance floor feed back, while the track -everything happens for a reason, is becoming a house and techno anthem at some festival this past summer. this project is surely for those who like great music and want to keep their house music collection alive.

a teacher by trade, dr mary sullivan bain recorded her musical works to be used as an educational and motivational tool in the miami-dade public school system she taught in. the single was recorded at miami sound recordings, south florida and released in small numbers as a self-published 12 pressing for educational purposes. copies of ‘do you know black history did not circulate much further than floridas public school libraries and the vaults of some local radio stations when it was released in 1985. produced with no label constraints, mary worked alongside her friend and vocalist herman attaway. she would give him the words and the melody and together they translated her ideas into song. if one wanted to categorise it theyd have to put a copy in a few different boxes … 808s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. the production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the south side. whilst the categories are blurred whats clear is that the musicians who made this thought outside of the box.

red laser ceo il bosco selects four manctalo nukes that rock the label s manchester party on a regular basis. the manchester dj and producer carefully edits these rare or ignored tracks with the help of the another well-known local who only wishes to be known as the bat. play that song is like the smiths decided to have a go at boogie and creates an amazing mix of indie electro funk that shouldn t work but does. a little happiness has had the big italo collectors around europe searching frantically for the original of this lost gem since the track was aired on red laser s soundcloud. who will find it first? pac manc is an amazing dreamy slice of electro boogie ripe for the dancefloor and finishing the ep in style is the heavy drum led afro funk of shotgun rules again, with a synth bassline so big you could see it from mars. this one will live in dj bags for some time. limited to 150. hand stamped in textured grey card sleeves.

played by ricardo villalobos - its time for the next release on long-running paris label bass culture and owner d julz has invited a crack team of talented individuals to deliver the magic to this latest instalment in the label s release schedule. this extra special remix package features contributions from the legendary dj skull, along with sebo k, henrik bergqvist and romanian mp. the bossman s own 2015 ep houdini is the subject of this exquisite bunch of reworks, giving the whole release a fresh lick of paint from a group of artists handpicked by d julz to get to work on his productions. the title track houdini is first in line, with the mighty dj skull on remix duty. the chi-town legend has been a favourite of d julz since the early nineties when he was releasing on labels such as djax-up-beats. the funk-imbued workout he creates from the original production is superb and a testament to someone who has been involved in music for three decades and still going strong. keeping dj skulls remix company on the a-side is sebo k with his take on serendipity. following on from his outstanding ep brock wild, sebo returns to bass culture with another taught dance floor cut, full of swing and groove, pushed along with a strong, insistent energy. on the flipside the deep sultry flavours continue to bubble up. two more dynamic artists bring their unique touch to bass culture and the first is the romanian wonderkid mp (mihai popescu), who has previously released on the sub-label bass culture limited. his reinterpretation of serendipity is deep, nuanced and quirky with a simmering atmosphere throughout.last but certainly not least is the swedish maestro henrik bergqvist. waiting 4 visa gets a kick in its step, with mysterious cosmic fx layered over a mesmerising bassline and a collection of bleeps and chirps that really bring the remix to life. and there it is, four superb new mixes of three great tracks... enjoy!

sterns edits returns after the sell-out success of its debut edition with another two catalogue reworks from ben gomori. this time he turns his attention to burkina faso s much-loved taxi-driver-turned-singer, amadou balaké. balaké ( porcupine in mandinka) is burkina faso s proudest musical export, and in 2013 he recorded his final album before passing away: in conclusion. the record saw him revisit some of his most popular tracks from his remarkable 50-year career, backed by an eight-piece burkinabé band who took the country s traditional sounds and brought them into a contemporary light. gomori retains the essence of the original recordings which were mostly captured in one take and marries them to vigorous afro-house stylings. bar konon mousso (musicien c est pas quelqu un) in which balaké tells of a bar lady being unimpressed by his profession, gets a gentle push towards the modern dancefloor, its wonderful sax lines resplendent. massa kamba is taken for a drive down the more traditional route, with commanding drums bolstering the original grooves and a marvelous triple harmony brass section at its core. balakes freewheeling style suits the hypnotic feel of the edits to a tee. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and london s ben gomori.

as huntleys + palmers events has drawn to a close, 2018 will see a big focus in releasing some brilliant new music and introducing some amazing new artists. first up is wheelman straight out of glasgow and fresh off the back of his debut for our studio barnhus buddies. to our shame, it took a kornel kovacs trip to rubadub to bring to our attention a real talent who was under our now the whole time! hed even been to a bunch of our parties and wed never made the connection. righting this wrong, we promptly hit him up for music to include on a clyde built compilation and they were so good, we designated the bulk of these tracks to this release 5 absolute belters!
