chicago producer savile returns to his home base, argot, for his second release of 2016 -- share power. here, savile skirts the bleeding edge of american dance music, proving without a doubt that he s mastered his own minimal sound. lean, hypnotic, and syncopated. share power is an ode to collaboration, kindness, and making space, distilled through his vision for midwestern house and techno.
share power is dedicated to two parties savile played in ohio during 2015 -- in training in cleveland and midwest fresh in columbus. on -three hours in the meat sink,- savile wrests maximum impact from the barest elements — a sparse, moaning bassline is the track s backbone, upon which rippling synth, hypnotic hi-hats, and a carefully placed call to arms roll out in stride.
flip the record over for -effort won t betray you,- where explosive chord stabs fill a sharp, syncopated skeleton of percussion — that s all there is, and that s all there needs to be.

pocket money returns for their third release and they are back with what could easily be their strongest output yet. just hitting the ripe old age of one, and a couple of releases in, this label has found its stride nicely and starting to turn heads in the scene. taking the spotlight for the deep basics ep is the producer keepin soul, who may only have a handful of releases to his name but puts himself in the spotlight with this deep and meaningful pocket money release. this is a beautifully dusty sounding record, it opens up doing exactly what it says on the tin deep basics and doing them well. this a1 is all about hypnotic grooves undulating against the drive of crisp, warm and exciting percussive grooves.

youth isn’t usually associated with wisdom, or depth or complexity for that matter. most 22 year-olds are still figuring out how a washing machine works but in the case of howes (the solo project of manchester-based john howes) he’s making electronic music that is operating on innovative and experimental levels one might expect from a hardened career musician hitting their stride. having released a more house-oriented 12” on melodic a couple of years ago, his debut album proper is a record that is as expressive as it is cohesive. it’s a release that floats between nocturnal stillness and insomniac driven intensity. the shift, howes says, “comes from the forced and narrow nature of a lot of electronic music. most modern electronic music to me is too safe in terms of ambition, sound design and intention.”
