a little over six years ago, let s play house because, in earnest, with a 12-inch called indoor pool. fittingly, the track it revolved around was by runaway, the duo comprised of marcos cabral and jacques renault, and featured remixes by some tight friends of the imprint, beautiful swimmers, slow hands, and soft rocks. we thought it d be fun to celebrate our birthday for once, but not with something too obvious (e.g. a compilation) or too involved (e.g. a warehouse party blowout). what we came up with is this, a 10-inch that reflects a little of the past into the present. appropriately, it includes edits by two of the artists on that debut ep. runaway s is a dusted-off and remixed secret weapon from the act s early days while soft rock s is classic soft rocks, albeit from a more current vintage (it was recorded this year). both absolutely rock. a little twisted, a little tilted, a little tipsy, but, as always, tight and tidy. funny how, since 2009, everything has changed and nothing has changed at all for this label of ours.

the superb forbidden planet is a shiny early electro cut with a great funk bass line, a real instrumental groove and fantastic melodies that shimmer like a hot sun. it s filled with joy and sounds as fresh today as ever, the way it ducks and dives and offers real warmth. the francisco remix keeps the funk vibe but changes the groove to be a more chicago house style cut. as such it has a rasping bassline, big drums and coarse percussion that make you want to jack. the masterful ali renault—a go-to disco and synth specialist who runs cyber dance records, human shield record company and most recently his own vivod imprint—then turns out a hypnotic version that is more driven and direct for the dance floor, with robotic bass and epic reflective synth lines. it s a cinematic track with great analogue textures that goes back to the future. the last original is the excellent stay with me , a cosmic love song with breezy trumpets and dreamy disco vibes as well as soulful vocals. italo melodies and infectious percussion finish it off and make it an instant crowd pleaser.

do yourself a favour and dance across the floor when listening to the new jacob korn-record, aptly titled son of gx. the music is heavily based on the good old yamaha electone organ. the home organ for the world s gentlemen was modified by jacob himself and is now an integral part of his studio. as you ll hear it on the ep, it injects a decent dose of fun into jacob s vision of house music. at least, you will instantly notice that when listening to singlefinger chord, a track that conquers the floor with its disco elements. rumours say that jacob s cat toddled on his poor man s yamaha cs80 when producing cats on organs. if that s true, the cat provided an irresistible hook to an already slamming, italo-inspired track. son of gx is every bit as compelling as the first two tracks with its synth trumpet glory while the slighty darker fun blocks sustains us with heavy percussion works straight out of the yamaha electone organ. on top, you ll get a remix for singlefinger chord by new york s jacques renault (let s play house) as digital bonus.

ali renault s ever on-point vivod label welcomes uk techno stalwart tobias schmidt to the table for a return to a time when techno could be slamming, witty and downright fun at the same time. higher is loaded with funk, riding some kind of bassy lick with tightly wound drums and off-kilter synth warbles, but then -glass walls- ramps up the madness with a lead line that will stop people in their tracks before making them freak out with gusto. -pink milk- shows no let up in the energy, although the parping trumpet lines that lead the track give everything a jaunty, upbeat feel compared to the darkness of the a side. play people is a true tribute to the wonky techno scene schmidt came up with, all skronky swing and lopsided synths for all the true techno freaks out there.
