sharif laffrey can charm the snake out of any basket. this is his first offering for the esp institute. side as tangier is a long drawn-out exercise, an endurance test of the highest order. over the span of some thirteen minutes, elements bob and weave intermittently and layers overlap haphazardly the type of exciting dynamic that s born out of restrictio as if putting down a live jam without enough hands to work the console, yet sharif perseveres. as touch and go as this arrangement may be, there is something that undoubtedly glues it all in place the combination of his massive rolling 16th-note bassline and his tough-as-nails drumkit is so good that, upon first listen, we spat out our tea and insisted on its release. on side b, everything is nice carries on with loose arrangement, dirty production and layers of inexplicable spoken word samples (a sharif calling card by now) but this time we re lead to a melancholy place, the blue comedown to side as antagonistic trial. with his esp institute debut, sharif leaves you mentally unhinged, as if youve smoked something interesting and arrived bewildered in some saharan labyrinth. these two songs will guide you through the medina to score the black meat.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. c powers was raised in atlanta, georgia, usa. he lives in savannah, georgia. he is resident dj for performance art drag collective house of gunt. he has also been resident dj at clubnights cape fear in savannah, hunger in atlanta and no pain in pop in london. he works in a library and is cat dad to peppers, bucchi, and baby d. his releases include the oysters ep for proper trax in 2015 and the up neck ep for cgi records in 2014. he produced the single crow for the group 18+ (from their album trust) as well as songs on their album collect. fitness check shows c powers s experience as a dj as well as his growth as a producer. from the drum programs to the arrangements, it s obvious that the ep was written and produced by someone who can work a dancefloor. on wysh, which he says is an exit reaction to morose and morbid- techno, subliminal speech and warped vocal stabs transition from centered to alert. on fresco he dices and scatters a song over loops of itself, a technique he calls -a grey area between sampling and editing,i break it up into bits, resequence that shit then stuff that shit back into the track.js may get even more service from the wysh key beats and fresco beatapella versions, which give jacking rhythm tracks and sub-bass extra room to do their thing. the heavily dubbed ask less kick beats, lighter on drums but with a booming bassline, may prove useful as a set-opener or closer. the ep has been mastered for club play by helmut erler at dubplates & mastering, berlin.

dj support comes from ben ufo, jon k and hodge. semtek returns with his first work since 2012, when he contributed 12inches to world unknown, awkward movements and in plain sight. in the meantime the cambridge-born, bristol-based producer and dj has been hard at work running his label don t be afraid, bringing through talent including mr beatnick and mgun. bad teeth consists of nothing more complicated than two complementary tracks for the dancefloor, inspired by bleep n bass, jungle and two-step. the title track rolls moody synths, metallic stabs and offbeat drums into a rugged uk house joint. jon of worcester twists similar elements around a broken groove, cutting between drum machine and breakbeats. both tracks feature rolling basslines tuned for maximum soundsystem pressure.

dj support from brackles and peverelist. samrai is a founding member of swing ting, a dj and production squad behind club nights of the same name in manchester. they have two 12inches to their name on fat city (head gone and creepin) as well as remixes for mosca, murlo and beneath. riddim trax is samrais first solo release. his riddims are deceptively simple fusions taking in a spectrum of soundsystem influences and uk dance music, including dancehall, soca, afrobeats and uk garage. the ep opens with the summery let it ride, featuring swing ting mc mr fox s vocal in classic singjay mode. instrumental version responsibility riddim follows, before the b-side plunges into more rugged territory with problematic riddim and the brutal concrete riddim.

beneaths early productions first surfaced on the wifey show on deja vu fm. releases followed through his own no symbols label, dj pinch s tectonic and blackdowns keysound. he is widely acclaimed for his originality, in synthesising the dread soundscapes of 2004-2006 dubstep with the rolling tempo of uk funky and echoes of the bleep n bass subgenre of uk house and techno. this debut for niche n bump (orchestrated by a member of the wifey crew) showcases his most uncompromising work, mixing wild, off-kilter bass with mutating, otherworldly tones. swing ting are a manchester dj and production duo behind the city s energetic club nights of the same name. known for injecting up-to-the-minute uk music with bashment-inspired energy, here their remix ably advances that mission. armed with breaking glass, dub sirens and enhanced bass pressure it blasts bellz into a sleek shape for peak-time dancefloors, resembling their 2011 overhall of mosca s tilt shift for fat city.
