in 2006, tim arndt released the first near the parenthesis album “go out and see”. arndt had intended to follow up that release with a more beatless ambient album, where percussion was left to the side and composition took center stage. a shelved idea that we now get the benefit of a full ten years later. this new album helical is the realization of arndt s stripped down ambient concept. helical features arndt’s characteristic experimental modem classical instrumentation and compositional style, but slows things down and stretches them out. the focus on the organic is clear, but moments of ethereal breath weave in and out and prevent the album from becoming too self aware. helical, as a loose reference to the geometric structure of our very dna and it contains themes that are driven by a recent discovery of arndt’s past and ancestry. the release seamlessly stitches all of these concepts together and marks an unique release and new direction for arndt’s near the parenthesis.

mirko takes his vision to the next level, producing two tracks that defy any convention in todays often monotonous and stagnating music market: * undo* minimalistic intro leads on to a bunch of spooky vocals looped throughout the whole piece, squelchy synth melodies and percussive stabs all around, while * solaris* atmospheric, bright and ethereal pads make for a more than 12 minutes long trip of blissed out magic.

technosoul .03 comes from blazej malinowski, who has previously released on swedish phorma and canadian silent season amongst others. “mika” and “open closed open” might serve as blazej s sound signature – deeply rooted, hypnotic techno with a trance edge, which works both on the dancefloor and in comfort of one s home. remix number one comes from the legendary british dj and producer steve bicknell, whose take on “mika” is raw and very dense at once – it serves as the most brutal piece of music on the release. remix number two comes from “the mad ukrainian” stanislav tolkachev, whose vision strikes as a real surprise. instead of his usual beats stampede, he has provided the record with a beautiful, ethereal offbeat techno: this won t probably work as a peak time monster, but with a proper audience, it will have a mesmerizing effect!

taking a brief detour from his normal abrasive distorted sound, pinion showcases his broad spectrum as an artist with the desire ep. the title track, desire (half measure),starts out of the gate with a thunderous half beat 808 coupled with a swinging hihat pattern that slowly works ethereal vocal slices into the forefront, accompanied with a modulating synth pad that evolves into a defining melody. the sister track, desire (full measure), has very similar characteristics as the original, but allowing a little more edge for the dancefloor to build on. the third original track, recollection shifts gears quite drastically with a 135 bpm stormer with enough soul and melody to make the uncharacteristically fast tempo seem inconsequential. last, comes kyle geiger on remix duties to round out the ep with a housier take on desire, but still enough bite to fit nicely into any techno set.

altered moods recordings makes its first artist foray into asia, more specifically, it sets its sights on nagano, japan, where it finds a fertile and quickly expanding underground scene and one of its key players, yoshiki tsuchiya, also known as miruga. miruga has made a big splash in his relatively short arc as an underground artist. he came out strong in 2012 with human tube on anton zaps bellwether ethereal sound label after a full-length digital album on logos recordings two years prior.

damien lynch is a gentleman youve met in a past life. emerging with this debut, he steps nicely into a home at the esp institute. on side a, we‘re invited to the heights, a transcendent state where the negative space between the notes is equally as important as his lush instrumentation. damiens build-up of warm analogue machines twinkle and stab, leading way to a memorable hook, a squelching chord melody full of live nuance and energy. on side b, safe house plays out a similar theme in terms of arrangement, however, the ethereal space damien creates with the kalimba and driving arpeggios elevates us to an even higher plane, where his lead floats gracefully across the stereo spectrum, blanketing the fast-paced rhythms with a calming sense of purity. were serious when we say that these two songs will guide you toward enlightenment.

opener equilibrium two from buitendijk is a perfectly streamlined and serene bit of spaced out, hypnotic techno. gentle synth pulses roam about the airwaves, left and right, up and down, as ethereal pads glow behind. it s heady dancing music, whilst liem s contact is also perfectly aimed at both head and heel. it is full of lick synth pulses that bubble and boil as watery droplets and ticking hits also colour the most subliminal groove. closer this is all you need is a more textured, frazzled cut with frosty lines and rickety pads working you into a trance. rich drums and clever bass filtration add dynamics and tension and so like everything else here the end result is hugely captivating.

a seminal, bold and instantly nostalgic lp, midnight wave showcases imres immense ability to craft vivid landscapes of ethereal sound, infused with layers and years of emotional content. here is a body of crackling, warm ambient and techno with a vast, cinematic scope. a sonic portrait of an alienated moment in london, told using industrial visceral tools and visualised through the cutting figure of a lonely individual boarding the 5am night bus home.

moscow label grow continues in fine creative form, seemingly not sticking to a motive or trend but rather concentrating on the strength of character within the music it releases. for the labels eighth release the artist is berlin based the marx trukker, who over the last 10 years has been developing his very distinct sound and recent output on labels like pluie/noir, the untold stories, and most recently noorden, have all been especially impressive. now on grow comes the 4 track vinyl * heavens crackling*, from the title one is expecting something awesome, and the album does not disappoint, right from the off, the first track: * a time well spent*, begins with celestial tones ringing out and the performance develops with great synth work, enlightened and very enlivening, spring is in step and something is beginning. the record continues at such a level throughout, overflowing with rich tones, warmth, and raw sounding percussion. in the second track, * all the boating still a tide to go*, deep warm bass and strings reverberate, as if amidst a hot harbours summer, then the ethereal synths return as magical breezes of cooling wind on a june day. on the bside comes the title track * heavens crackling*, the tone has cooled, there is an autumnal vibe, extended tones of an eerie but reassuring nature provide the ground, from under which a molten bass flows playfully. the final track, * i do anything but its so cold*, as the title would suggest, again time has passed, gone are the warm relaxed echoes of the the opening tracks, winter has come, and a strong percussive energy becomes the driving force of an especially deep and more introverted last track. in heavens crackling there is an uncanny understanding of time passing and representation of being, its present in the patience and performance within every track, and the effect of the album, which seems, like the seasons, to naturally come full circle, is for the listener indeed to experience a time well spent. top marks for the marx trukker!

resolutely electronic, ambient and experimental with a techno key, küjuu delivers an exploration jerked and pulled about, meeting distance universes behind melodic songs found in first titles. percussions and harmonic beats makes travelling alongside a tumultuous path and at the same time, melancholic and & deep. sincerity and compositional skill, this ep takes mystery under an overpowering and rough deep bass made listening and elastic, propelling an evocative and ethereal line.

mosco fell asleep in tel aviv and awoke days later in berlin. this is his first offering for the esp institute. on side a, akachi plows straight in with its relentless rolling bassline, a thick blanket enveloping any and all breathing room. an array of squelches and atonal pads struggle to rise above the trudging rhythm, while live percussion slides in and out of frenzy. on the flipside, nobody else shows us moscos more ethereal side. beautifully programmed drums draw us in as the accentuated hi-hats and claves elegantly pierce rhythmic synth work, until finally were carried away by mystic keys layering in heavenly glissandos. these two songs will make you thirst for potent potions.

charolastras are a group of experimental electronic musicians with a keen interest in ancient rituals involving dance. in many cultures from the past, music and dance were closely tied with shamanism, spirituality and even combat. these traditions continue today in some parts of the world where music isnt solely for entertainment, as is often the case in our modern western society. the group s goal is to spread a message of peace and unity with their music. this intention is evident in the blissful ethereal textures used in their mellifluous productions. but their sound can also have a harder edge that evokes conflict, not calm. this is all by design because, as charolastras like to point out, sometimes you have to fight for peace .

the anticipated second release from los angeles/seattle imprint slumdiscs comes in the form of a 12 inch from two artists who have each had a prolific year, refining their respective takes on dark electronics. side a features three tracks from italian producer morkebla (where to now?/reckno). he utilizes ethereal synths to create vast, mind expanding soundscapes just as suited for club use as they are for deep meditation. side b is provided by portland artist best available technology (astro:dynamics/working nights). contained within is an experiment in variations and reductions that rewards close listeners with a glimpse into the slow decay of self-contained sonic ecosystems. *go slumming* marks the first full length collaboration between the two artists and showcases the best of their respective styles.

new to the stay underground it pays gang, the eighth release on the label comes from none other than octo octa! you know him from his prolific run on 100% silk, and more recently for his ep on gerd jansons running back label at the top of the year. the man from brooklyn serves up 4 slices of that u.s. experimental house sound we love so much. on the a side, we have two versions of octo octa’s melancholic title track, requiem for the body. both as good as the other, it’s gonna be split for a lot of listeners on which is better. while both versions share certain elements, the second plays down the long keys of the first versions in favour of some stabby chord patterns. either way, proper 4 a.m. business!on the flip, we get a bit more ethereal with times two (loose version). simple yet effective, this one has a lot of atmosphere with those delayed vocal cuts over that late 80s bassline. closing out the record is when home. this one is a bit of a stomper at first until it brings in the lighter synth elements halfway through. someone, somewhere will have an epiphany listening to this track. if its you reading this, send in the results on the back of a postcard. all in all, another killer release that feels straight at home in the stay underground it pays catalogue

operator tracey delves into the world of weirdo acid on the a1. gloomy digi-strings float over over inflated kick drums and bouncey percussion, choice vocal samples punctuate this unusual yet super infectious, squelchy hardware workout. perseus trax drags the machines out and launches an arpeggiated, ethereal assault. progressive melodies and choking hi hats smash into one another whilst a booming 707 kick rattles the bass bins, prime time floor fodder.
