adham shaikh ist ein geschätzter ambient-, dub- und keyboarder-künstler aus vancouver, kanada, dessen tracks anfang bis mitte der 90er jahre ihren weg auf wegweisende labels wie instinct, dossier, interchill und sein eigenes label modulation elektronik gefunden haben.

diese sammlung enthält eine auswahl der wichtigsten frühen werke, die mit ascend beginnt, dessen spacige dub-atmosphäre zu den versteckten ambient-dub-perlen der 1990er jahre gehört. vapor vervollständigt die a-seite mit seinem wortreichen ausflug in organische und räumliche dub-atmosphäre. auf der b-seite befindet sich die über 16-minütige ätherische odyssee windgate 11:11, die seit über 25 jahren zu den favoriten der fans gehört. der 22-minütige spitzentrack namens oberon (greymatter), der sich auf der c-seite ausbreitet, stammt von seiner debüt-ep realignment seines labels modulation elektronik aus dem jahr 1993. der vielleicht proto-technischste track auf diesem album ist ein paradebeispiel für die freie ausdrucksweise der damaligen zeit im ambient-dub. der letzte track, der hier vorgestellt wird, trägt den gleichen titel wie adham shaikhs meistverehrtes und beliebtestes album journey to the sun.

“homoheterogeneity”, originally released in january 2015, is the debut album from raccoglimento parziale, the duo formed by andrea giachetti and stefano meucci (the clover, silent people). in eight dense tracks, the album builds piece by piece an arcane language, made up of electromechanical beats, powerful basses, digitized guitars and broken samples, assembled in a liquid and fluctuating atmosphere. “homoheterogeneity” is a microscope’s view, a revealing blow-up over a cloud of microsounds, sometimes digital, sometimes organic. it’s a discovery of new life forms, homo/heterogeneous to our eyes - and to our ears. delivered on vinyl 33 rpm and mastered by frank merritt at the carvery in london, the album boasts on the cover the experimental photographic work of sandro crisafi, who visually recreated in the darkroom the chemistry that connects these fluctuating sounds.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin’ records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called “fairy godmother of house” abigail adams, movin’s first output was ‘i’ve got the music’ by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up “jersey jams” that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin’ records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin’ records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve ‘lucky’ benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line “i love this place”. the ‘place of worship’ mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

it might not always be obvious, but music as escapism can serve as a radical social statement. what some may see as daydreaming or imagination of impossible realities, can constitute a sort of revolution of thought, the seed of a more human and sentient worldview. although on a first listen, high-level basis, it may seem as if the music contained in informa’s 10th release is a series of psychedelic, dystopian and otherworldly tools for escape, it might actually be a proposition for improvement, a route to self-discovery, a reflection on the true nature of our surroundings. although at no point in this release such high concepts are made explicit, there is a consistency in vision and methods present in the art created by the peers that label founder and owner deepbass has selected for this very special, celebratory release. encapsulating the product of eight minds, eight visions, in a common concept for evolution in unity.
