die entstehung von “and the anonymous nobody” hat einige jahre gedauert. es war der wunsch der band ein sample-basiertes album aufzunehmen im stile von “3 feet high and rising”. um zum ziel zu gelangen, nahmen de la soul über 300 stunden musik in den verschiedensten stilen auf - von bossa nova über soul, hiphop, funk, disco bis zu reggae - und erschufen so ihr eigenes arsenal an instrumental-alben, aus denen sie samplen konnten.

the soft rocks collective feature twice on the upstart black rox label with two heavily tribal remixes for a so far unknown artist. the soft rocks take on *filaw* is wrapped in horns and jungle sounds - not too far off a 1970s brian jackson and gil scott heron collaboration. on the flip is a possible talking heads reference in *once in a life time*, which gathers mesmeric african drums and percussion, grooving in harmony to ritualistic chant. a mohican david byrne perhaps?

the one-two kick drum beat that starts “in the dark of the night” functions as a bit of a tease. instead of merely establishing the languid pace of the track, it has the power of suggestion, and its stark nakedness raises the question of what will happen after the music fully launches. a few seconds later, a punch-drunk, flanging keyboard is the first clue that the listener is in for an off-kilter ride, the sauntering bassline that next appears adds a springy, funk bounce. but it’s the tripped-out, multi-tracked vocals of fernando miranda rios, aka michoacan, the producer behind this slow reveal, that give the song its peculiar, space-yvibe. it’s like david byrne with funk aspirations and a vaguely cosmic feel. the b-side remix, courtesy of italy’s clap rules, feels like more of a re-build. the song has been taken apart and put back together with brand new parts. instead of more relaxed, dazed funk at the core, it’s a glittery, disco-ball splattered track with glossy keys all around.
