mihigh & lizz teamed up, creating a clearly defined narrative on the launch of the 12-inches melodrom label, where the close, sometimes ambiguous details are incredible. the ep is loaded with the style of both producers: it combines mihigh’s minimalist sound with a strong attention to stylistic details and lizz’s trademark groove.

the pale and the colourful is the first album of internazionale presented on vinyl by posh isolation after a near flood of limited tape releases both through his own remarkable janushoved label and through posh isolation. the pale and the colourful is a logical summary of internazionales work up to this point and is the prime example of the sensual synthetic meditations he has come to be known for.
the clear pop sensibility to his compositions are clouded with noises and ambiguous field recordings and it is somehow hard to really figure out if the music intends to lift us up or hold us down. what is certain is that no internazionale release up to this point reaches the level of this new album.

fort romeau returns with his first 12inch of 2018 following a string of releases on live at robert johnson, running back and ghostly international as well as appearances on compilations from rush hour, cocoon, and mule musiq. on the a side, pablo unfurls with swirling arpeggios which build to a euphoric crescendo while the more heady terracotta explores polyphonic syncopated fm sequences and ambiguous chord progressions.

for this release metrist delves into a set of carefully constructed and deeply rhythmic but ear-grabbingly idiosyncratic, mixed fidelity dancefloor-geared oddities. the first three tracks are united, in a fashion, by the artist’s skill at programming a series of drum tracks that set a definite tone for the productions. within a quite partisan field of often microscopic generic variety, largely pinned down to the tempo and timbre of electronic drums, here metrist has pursued a tricky-to-define path. the bounce of new jack swing is twisted amongst stripped back polyrhythms, equal parts groove and glitch seasoned by some futuristic acid filters that create a constantly shifting aura of space and textural nuance around the individual drum hits. quite often arrhythmic interjections punctuate these ‘grooves’, be it the sawing bursts of noise and snarled, incoherent vocals on ‘an soaep’, the non-language and playful, bubbling bass surrounding the half time feel of ‘on golden seize’ that builds to something approximating an industrial take on uk funky or the brash sub-wobbles that intrude ‘pantomimer tongue’s juddering knife-scraping-on-a-balloon stutters. ‘caaacel the horze’ closes the record in a less weighty style, with crunchy arpeggios running on a synth that sounds like it’s picking up interference from a radio channel, as snatches of moaned vocals allude to a deeply ambiguous yet chilling narrative behind the music. thudding kicks intrude on the skittish melody but in a non-rhythmic way reminiscent of someone trying desperately to snatch your attention by banging on the adjacent wall. gauzy melodic textures in the background provide a calming counterpoint to the uneasy qualities of the composition

having spent seven years in his adopted home of london steadily crafting a hazy, ambiguous identity that fuses ambient onto drone and techno, tom hang (aka lobster theremin boss jimmy asquith) finally steps up to the plate with “to be held in a non position” - a melded one-take lp that explores extended themes of isolation, loneliness, personal loss, disconnection and reconnection with reality and (self)-identity.
through his long-lost label tidy bedroom - on which “to be held in a non position” will be released - tom hang engages in a more introspective path, exploring sonic territories that find an echo with dislocated past experiences, pushing physical and psychic boundaries to get at the crux of intimacy.

since his first release in 1997, hanna has been a body of art with the agenda of putting ambiguous chord structures and harmonies into an electronic music envelope. the more popular works lying in the deep house and techno genre. the apron release called the never end, opens and closes with ambient pieces without drums or percussion with strange titles being and when which are improper adjectives or nouns that symbolize the ambiguity of the chords and beauty of the sound. the other 4 pieces nudge previous unique hanna minerva that makes this a special and impressive release.

joining our label for the 4th release are dan andrei and kozo, under their collaboration named ak41, a fructuous project that offers three highly complex tracks.
on the a side you can find “icebreaker” solely, an eccentric sound with a steady bassline, percussive kicks, tripping shakers and a thoughtful, mysterious melody that touches all the frequencies of your body. turning to the b side we find “swingenious”, a groovier interpretation produced by a combination of spacey feelings and sophisticated instruments that will move every bone on the dancefloor. closing the ep is “in memoriam”, a melancholic version that is not short of an aggressive bassline, ambiguous vocals and deep introspects, all aligned to disconnect you from the reality of routine.

after a quick 4 years hiatus, filled with releases on innervisions, maeve and a couple of remixes, aera is finally back on his own aleph music imprint with 3 unique tracks. a1. two planets is the most obvious track of the ep. an exercise in outsider trance, a pulsating, polyrhythmic synth propels the track forward, the intricate 707 pattern keeps a steady pace, while background strings provide all the drama. b1. stylistically reminiscent of aeras first releases on aleph music, black glitz is the deepest track of the bunch. floating on a cloud of dreamy pads and voices, that arpeggio makes you realise immediately who you are dealing with. b2. maskull is a rather ambiguous little tune. somewhat rough around the edges, sparkling in the darkness of late nights, dwelling in voices and fog, this is the one for the heads.

for the first release on raw m.t.’s jinn records imprint, japanese producer yoshinori hayashi continues his left-field electronic experiments debuted last year on going good with a visually-evocative voyage through ambiguous collages of distorted broken-beat tropes and far-east soundscapes. on the flip, dj sotofett provides a stunning 12 min-long oriental reverie to get things even deeper.

supernova takes the pace right on light up : tweaked pads and a tripping bass with an irresistible, effortless pause and re-start. tingog by basti grub shuffling a tribal vibe enhanced with fine atmospherics and piano melodies. bimas presents breakstone : an high quality deep-tech track influenced by ambient-house with ambiguous rhythmical and sweet voices. flair by malatoid offers listeners an hypnotic trip between an actual tech-house and 90s house sonorities.

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.

the new release from help presents works from various help-releated artists. another release from the arhus-imprint that doesn’t directly state club-proof, but still, this one wouldn t mind having a spin or two by your local dance pusher.the opening track is by central, a ripe house tune with both melodies and good-vibes - probably the closest this young man has come to making an anthem. next up is the four piece group maizena with an ambiguous rhythmical ambient-house jam from the area of denmark with the least rainfall. on the b-side you’ll find a raw and to the point recording of dj sports and c.k joining ph 1 in his throwback techno-studio in the suburbs of arhus. next up is the long awaited debut from manmade deejay, who has been cooking a floating rhythm jam for this 5 course meal of modern danish cuisine. last but not least amsterdam-based kaap joined central on a fine day at rubber studios to create this dreamy and galloping ride. all in all this genuine piece of wax is filled with local devotion and love from the help-crew. thanks for the support!

throughout the ages man has been obsessed with the idea of the dead coming back to us, either through the power of faith, magic and/or science, or as (horror) arousing visitations from beyond the grave. but cold hands like these neednt be physical: an ambiguous childhood memory, a few burning phrases from a book, or a short but powerful patchwork of tones and rhythms can also come back and haunt you when you least expect it. ritual malmö 02 consists of three such works that have haunted us for some time now, beseeching us to share them like cursed japanese vhs-tapes. who we are is not important - this is forever yours now.

delving further into what makes this reverent vancouver trio tick, 1800hs reveal a deeper, smoother side to their production that still packs a punch, whilst exploring more tender themes. twitching, rhythmic acid lines flicker over water-tight drums on *dreamer*, crystal synths rise out of the raw depths on *heldled*, and *drained* ends the proceedings on a melancholic yet emotionally ambiguous note, floating through seas of illuminating pads and steadily drifting towards the horizon.

returning to his original home for this ep, it represents yet another left turn on the ukkonen musical path. the man himself says: *once again i want to change direction a little, whilst still keeping all the things i love in there - the polyrhythms, phasing loops, ambiguous timings and so on* however this set sees the tempo looser than before. we are not sure if post-techno actually ever happened, but maybe post-discotronica is, er, in the post. anyway, we liked the tracks so much that we once again went the extra mile with the physical product - a clear and white marbled thing of beauty, cut to 10 inch size in a 12 inch pressing.

roberto bosco has selected in recent months kinys music, to better prepare his first 12 inch, consisting of four tracks, named *damaged memory*. the track *unknown* (a1) leads off the dance of the release on last drop records imprint. it is a proper exploration in an unknown sonic territory to most of the people, and also a difficult element to make out for those who are novice to the visionary component in the musical poetic of kiny. the track starts with rounds of recurring sirens, almost deafening, framed by dark and ghostly noises. something not easily identifiable, ambiguous and unknown, as the title itself says, is perceptible in its sound. all this helps to shape a bad presage that fades away into the mystery.

after appearances on idle hands and brstl, rhythmic theory returns to their own imprint to further explore gritty textures and mysterious moods within house and techno frameworks. where theory001 featured the somewhat soothing, melancholic tones of >echo vibe< and >omega syndrome<, this second installment comes caked in sonic muck and abrasive attitude.its not all dark and foreboding, as the graceful filter-swept key refrain of >siren song< will attest, but it takes a barrage of rasping hats and bludgeoning kicks and toms before such niceties can be foisted upon our ears. while there is an optimistic lilt to the particular notes the melody calls out, in the midst of such machismo percussion it cant help but feel emotionally ambiguous, continuing the tone set out in the first rhythmic theory releases.there is no such confusion over b side cut >genesis< from the apocalyptic boom of the opening kick to the rapid gun fire of the snare this is a track that wants to inflict damage. at the midway point the searing beat melts away as a wash of delay-riddled speech knocks you from your centre of gravity, only for the drums to come whipping back in to pick up the slack. even the sole synth note that rears its head is devoid of compassion, pulsing a creepy, robotic intonation through the clamour.

feverish new eaux release, limited white vinyl 1st edition, printed disco bag. although rroses alma mater record label sandwell district may now be defunct, the actively ambiguous american producer shows no signs of slowing down. after launching his own experimental techno label eaux earlier this year and making true-to-name appearances dressed as a sophisticated, chic female, rrose has continued to pursue elusiveness while ironically garnering an enthusiastic following amongst techno purists. without a doubt, the release of > wedge of chastity< will further reinforce the sonic niche that the eaux label has carved out for itself.
