better strangers is the debut album by manchester based producer acre, set for release by tectonic recordings on 6th november 2015. the album follows eps on both tectonic and sister label cold recordings and visionists pan collaboration label codes. as influenced by rave & jungle, grime and techno as electronica, ambient and drone, his ep releases have been rhythm driven snapshots of other-worldliness spliced with dancefloor sensibilities. acre has sought to explore a wider variety of textures on better strangers to re-contextualise elements from uk bass music, bring them away from the dancefloor and open up new possibilities.

the fourth release on manchester-focused label ad hoc brings together a range of outernational grooves from some fast-rising talents. cervo is aligned with the banana hill parties, and also previously released on black acre and lumberjacks in hell. his -hesse groove- takes a mellow, spaced out approach to dusty machine-powered house, while taurtollo gets into a bongo-heavy jam for the eclectic warm up session. chambers -the gentleman- is a loose and smooth jazzy number that revolves around a few key samples to create its seductive vibe, and then yadava finishes the ep off with the free-roaming double bass exploration of -kadampa 125.-

sam vicary a.k.a hunrosa (meaning “to dream”) is an electronic music producer capturing the wild organic senses of his childhood and anchoring it with a darker 2am undercurrent. based in manchester, he is principally a bassist and currently a member of the cinematic orchestra, paper tiger and the dominic j marshall trio, as well as performing with manu delago, imogen heap, matthew halsall, anil sebastian and stuart macallum. his latest offering “ransome” is a heavily rhythmic journey, full of textured hand percussion and soaring strings, accompanied by the beautifully melodic vocals of alice higgins drifting overhead. the clap clap remix sees the black acre mainstay exploring expansive territories, polyrhythmic hand percussion and textured electronica perfectly intertwine, drenched in dub ambience, heightened by scattered arpeggios and swirling synths. the music is inspired by a coastal upbringing, represented in the music via field recordings, as well as being aided by visual stimulus throughout the writing process.

manchester native alex coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12”s for the likes of black acre, livity sound and bloc. with gamma ray burst, the next in his series of releases on london low-end specialists tempa, coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. with the record’s title track, coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track’s most intense moments. ‘ground zero’ revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin ‘alpha decay’ are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion. showing his diverse abilities, ‘phase two’ is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section before coulton maximises his expansive elements on the fog-tinged ‘ascent’. closing with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of ‘distant resonance’, alex coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.
