detroit, 1993. the burden brothers, known for their octave one project and 430west record label, start a new sub label called direct beat. it was created to release the techno electro sounds of inner city detroit. in 1995 the label was in full effect and released music produced by friends such as tommy hamilton, keith tucker, mad mike banks, will web and them self.
now 15 years later we know that direct beat was one of the big influences on how electro and techno is today. together with underground resistance, axis, m-plant in detroit and some like minded people in europe and artists such as drexciya, aphex twin, autechre and dopplereffekt it changed the way people looked at techno... it broke away from the dominant 4/4 kick and brought back the funk and emotion that disappeared once house and techno became popular and mainstream music in the early 90s.

the particular view on a musical future might have been considerably different when olaf hilgenfeld (berlin) met iftah gabbai (jerusalem) for first sessions in 2004. the piano player hilgenfeld used the accordion that time mainly, whilst gabbai was using all instruments available, a computer was among those more by chance. only one year later the duo skinnerbox played regularly on such uplifting, innovative off-partys that came up in the new techno generation again.
that was just the beginning. skinnerbox have developed a purely electronically composed and performed music (partly featuring vocals by elle_p) – that is not based on loops but improvised techno inspired house and minimal house. the roles in the duo are clearly settled: olaf hilgenfeld – moog synthesizer, iftah gabbai – hardware drum machines, max/msp und ableton live.
all these distinct impacts and effects can be heard on their various releases from the last two years, but far better in their live sets. skinnerbox are an experience, taking you on expedition with paralyzing minimal, breaking house, hard-edged techno-jazz, and ambient electronica futurism.

on the a-side you find the title track, which takes in influences from detroit techno circa the age of ur to north african hooks. the filter sweep towards the end, which serves as the drop/break, is a master-class in restrained modulation that is bound to ignite any dance floor. on the b-side we find >25 west 38th st.< a slightly more reserved affair opening with the sound of the ocean air, then swiftly diving into a bass driven groove, which features lush strings and a piano-led top line creating a track that is as atmospheric as it is rhythmic. the ep itself takes influence from the b-side on two levels, the most immediate being the title of the track, which is the address of the old nu groove records offices. this is peter kruders homage to a time when dance music served as a momentary escape, an opportunity to make those around happy. it also brings peters relationship with gigolo records full circle, having begun in 2004 with his >nu groove< remix of hells >listen to the hiss<.

john tejada was marooned in los angeles in the summer of 82. a strange place to grow up coming from vienna austria. even stranger considering the lack of techno there in the 90s. in a land of glowsticks and desert parties, tejada stuck to his love and development of his own unique electronic sound. fast forward to 2007 when detroit area native josh humphrey was also marooned in los angeles. it didnt take long for the two to meet and connect the cables on their modulars into a system twice as big. the result is marooned, palettes newest collaboration between john tejada and josh humphrey. the trio of songs reveal three sides to the duos work. the title track, marooned, joins humphreys modular synth work with tejadas beats and soothing pads, the result being a slice of beat-driven melodic techno created in a city where such sounds are rarely heard. melodiac continues from there with a lighter mood, with humphreys modular melodies and tejadas signature stabs and rhythms. rounding out the three is concrete safari, which largely focuses on humphreys modular fm synth work that slowly evolves into a cluster of tribal sounds, modular birds and grainy goodness. humphreys knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. he currently works with la based big city music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers. it is also a place tejada frequents to test most of his gear

without much need for introduction, archipel welcomes the talent of minus niederflur who bring with them the darkly blinding >lumen ep<. a lumen is a unit used to measure the perceived power of light and this ep is most definitely very powerful and certainly can be perceived as such. this is where the line between something as intangible as light is crossed and becomes tangible as one would feel an intense and warming heat which goes so far as to manifest itself as something with mass. title track >lumen< is the focused, convex lens, knife edge point of light which focuses a small portion of the suns energy so densely it could initiate many a blaze. >masse< is as dense as the most solid of gems and radiates dark light like heavy water and is sure to corrupt any geiger counter within its radioactive reach while >flor< stacks itself as high and wide as it can go, building further and further upon itself, and just as one would think it could build no further, it rotates itself back to within and further densifies, an inescapable sort of density of which one is eternally locked pleasurably within. >flucht< raises one into the blackest skies of night and flies hour after hour through blood orange clouds filled with the atmospherically scattered light from what was temporarily civilization below but is now just a memory shaded in the delight of being closed within the phosphorescence of late night fog.

creeping wave is xpansul and sweeter beat. three tracks of modern techno grooves. title cut is a monster gallop of bleeps and synth tweaks. strady bass assault! sweeter beat, aka roberto melero, is one of those djs that first started playing electronic sounds with an electro / techno root in madrid, he has played in some of the most important clubs in madrid, like voltereta or soma experimental club, and after nearly 20 years behind the decks, his sound is definitely influenced by the e.b.m. sound, funk, techno and electro from detroit to miami, and the good old rave spirit.

for more than 15 years now, steve bug is known for influential track somewhere in between house, techno and minimalism. with his very good sense for the energy of self-limitation, bug has set standards when it comes to the funk of modern sound geometry, especially with his imprint poker flat recordings. milestones such as >loverboy<, >monsterbaze< or >wet n dry< are now essential elements of the history of electronic dance music. only a few weeks after the release of his fourth album collaboratory, bug even tops that one with this 12 inch on cocoon: while look whos stalking obviously refers to steves close relation to the raw energy of u.s. house in between chicago trax and detroit, using driving hand claps, percussions and nasty vocals, the flipside zero balance could pass as a vision of how far you can reduce techhouse to the essence of a bass line. also here, short vocal loops - besides the fast-moving elements - complete a sensibility that makes bugs tracks such high quality music for a very long time now.

florian kruse and nils nürnberg need very little introduction these days but for those that have been asleep or living under a rock, a good start would be to check their recent output on fine labels such as nrk, om, moodmusic, dessous and our very own dieb, to name a very select few. their first combined effort on the label has resulted in the >suerte ep<, a tight collection of deep as hell, tech infused house numbers heavily characterized by their attention to groove and addictive, seductive chord progressions that have become a hallmark of their production prowess.
to add some spice to an already sterling and stylized package, we have enlisted our good friend (and also mood music alumnus) alexander maier, to remix the titular >suerte< where he adds his considerable musical vocabulary to the proceedings, peppering a very tasty arrangement with piano chord stabs and throbbing basslines resulting in a gorgeous, summery house re-interpretation that has to be heard to be believed!
as if this werent enough, fresh from an impressive debut on nils and florians save room records we have been lucky enough to secure a percussion led, funk infused remix of >achieving balance< from bright new boys on the block io who round things off nicely and add another dimension to the >suerte ep<.

produced the same year as the truly epic >explorer< lp, >yellow power< takes the highlights from >explorer< and gives them an eastern twist. the hard to find / undiscovered >yellow power< was written and produced in germany by multi-instrumentalist tony carey (rainbow / planet p project) under his yellow power guise. originally released in 1982 this beautifully airbrushed japanese concept album contains 10 tracks of german electronica and cosmic disco / synth pop instrumentals. opening with >hai samurai<, which has been recently re edited by pilooski, this album voyages from spaced-out electro-disco gems such as >megawar<, >peking duck<, >tojo< and >radio tokyo< to cosmic / balearic oddities such as >queen of scots<, >blue fusion< and >dynamite<

the wurst edits gang has inducted yet another ny disco acolyte to the fold, the inimitable irishman in new york, eamon harkin. known for wild dj sets not to mention his innovative bookings at such parties as sunday best and fun, harkins no stranger to dance music. no wonder the mans shared bills with such legends as afrika bambaataa, juan atkins, grandmaster flash, the egyptian lover, and kevin saunderson. on his debut single, the man heads straight into peaktime territory with the sinister sounds of john boy, where synth toms jump out of the shadows only to punctuate an incredibly propulsive groove. innit takes a decidedly different turn down edits lane, rejuvenating an early 90s house gem in magnificently wurst fashion. extremely limited edition with handpainted covers
