there is a new name on cargo edition, but by no means an unknown one. as a dj markus schatz has been on the move for years now, all the while maintaining his roots in the berlin club scene. markus started producing in 2004 and both his solo eps and collaborations with tom clark on highgrade records and opossum recordings last year clearly demonstrate that his talents go far beyond the turntables. and now for his first ep on cargo edition, markus takes a step further into the musical spectrum. drippin is a nimble house track accented with a note of funk and the smooth vocals of sean andino, giving the track a slight pop-appeal. in contrast flippin gives us a beautifully reduced form of house all driven by a powerful rolling bass line, a textbook example of less is more. as a perfect ending restart surprises with its smooth house arrangements and sophisticated deepness. a truly versatile ep from a truly versatile producer.

played by karotte !! as if the year 2009 hadnt been eventful enough for berlin label highgrade and its french counterpart freak n chic , both camps have found space in the program for another very special tour de force this november. based on the similar philosophies of label founders tom clark and dan ghenacia, the two labels utilize the skills of their existing artist rosters while continuing to discover new talents, and togheter, pay tribute to almost all the artists from both labels with this fresh musical collaboration.

for the second release on ki records we invited a very special and talented artist from japan to join our label. daisuke tanabe, who studied art in tokyo and london, has been producing music for the last 13 years. various releases on zero dbs fluid ounce label and an impressive amount of remixes for gilles peterson’s brownswood imprint have proven daisuke tanabes versatility and talent for modern experimental electronic music. as a live act and dj, he performed with gilles peterson, onra, tim exile, hudson mohawke and clark. we decided to dare a leap into a more experimental way by publishing his outstanding flowers on a wall. the four-track ep will be released in august 2009 (500 copies ww on limited vinyl), simultaneously to his first album on japans circulation records.

marcus homm provides the starting point with “transposer“: funky, impulsive and peppered with unusual sounds. next up, tom clark takes the helm with “ultimo” and steers a course towards the dancefloor peaktime! on the flip, asem shama and demir & seymen splash out. asem’s “erato“ rocks in exhilarating fashion, and the fresh new highgrade lads demir & seymen provide rolling percussion and powerful orchestral stabs on “ethnos“, which really give the dancefloor some legs.
