dark entries are honored to reissue the 4th full-length from carolyn fok / cyrnai, an asian-american female solo artist from the bay area. in 1990 ‘to subtle-drive’ was re-released with 2 songs from the 1988 release and 4 new compositions. this reissue adds 5 bonus tracks recorded during the same period spread across a double lp set. each copy includes a double sided insert with lyrics, photos and notes by carolyn. all songs have been remastered by george horn at fantasy studios. old-soul beat tracks on cassette with time and techno-guilotine songs.

folks, here is tilly jam number four, served by till von sein with a striking can’t stop, won’t stop attitude. as if the first three fourtrackers were just heating things up, he’s firing out another ensemble of four to bring serious exercise to the floor. “say say say”, the opening title track of this ep checks many trademarks its originator is known and praised for. an explicitly soulful affair, even flexing some g-funk muscles here and there. crackling vinyl noise in the background, warm and thick bass footing, a bassline doing the filterhouse-routine and a sample heavy arrangement that even gets a boost-up after half of its running time. then there is “shadrach”. go do some exegesis if interested where that name stems from. we can assure you, this jazz-infused build-up including nervous hi-hat patterns, a boldly bass groove, a frenzy drum-solo, inciting chants and a horn section scaling things up, stems directly from peaktime heaven. and on b1, “impala” is taking up the thread of this rather outgoing vibe, tvs is going for with this set of tunes. find an energetic beat providing the ground work for filtered adlibs that kinda nail what comes to mind when this track gets mixed in. “whoo-hoo-hoo” – that’s right. just add some subtle percussive lining and let a saxophone take over and you’ll have another trigger for floor-ecstasy at hand. cooling things off a little bit it’s “baden powell dr” as closing cut. tilly is winding up the melancholy-meter on this one, reversing elements and by adding pianochords and synth-pads, infusing an overall mood of wind-whistling summertime-sadness

the 4th edition in the acclaimed sterns edits series sees curator ben gomori open up the sterns music catalogue to other keen re-editors with brownswood / worldwide genius smbd (aka simbad) the first to step up to the plate. nigeria s segun adewale is sometimes referred to as the crown prince of jùjú music, but in the 1980s he developed a sound all of his own, which he called yo-pop. a mixture of jùjú, funk, reggae, afrobeat and jazz, its vibrant melange can be heard on his 1986 record ojo je , where both these originals are taken from. smbd delivers too superb flips of the title track a gritty funk-fuelled disco version with live bass, and a deliciously deep dub-house version. gomori, meanwhile, takes the haunting atewo-lara ka tepa mo se for an extended hypnotic, tribal trip. the stunning artwork comes from kofi ankobra, the son of radical white south africans who grew up in ghana and studied art at oshogbo, nigeria the place adewale himself was born. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and londons ben gomori.

the 4th meters album marked their departure from josie records and was released on the reprise label in 1972. cabbage alley once again proved that the meters were one of the finest, rawest funk groups around. hailing from the soggy streets of new orleans, the meters essentially invented the second line groove, influencing funk music like no other artist (ok, aside from a singer by the name of james brown). these cats are essentially one unified rhythm section, with expertly timed drum breaks, bass driven grooves, bluesy chicken scratch guitars and southern singalong choruses.

after the successful mind trip ep, pulse msc releases its 4th release, a 4 track ep by matthieu faubourg with a stunning remix by the almighty black loops. with multiple kinds of sounds and influences, scenario is a beautiful dedication to lebanon. the french producer was inspired by a trip there and has created these 4 pieces. the result is wonderful, colorful and conducive to the imagination. expect to be strayed until you find your way. hope is another important theme in that musical journey, well symbolized in the sentimental tune yaret (which means -i hope in lebanese arabic).

after profound synthesis, fundamental sounds return to the game with another special ep, warrios of xian. the first emperor of china built the xian warriors because he thought that those warriors could re-incarnate and return to life in this world or another. this record embodies that transcendental spirit, taking the ethos of that old chicago sound and letting it live on through the new word of some of its modern natives and far flung global brothers. at its centre is the dance floor.
