ncql annouces himself in no uncertain fashion with the anthemic strings of >the framed dreams of loki<. the track nods to dj premier, prefuse 73 and classic metalheadz d&b hidden agenda style and theres a subtle (!) reference to a certain classic 90s rave tune in there aswell. it sounds like a mess – its anything but! this is uplifting breakbeat at its very best. its not often a tune gets played twice by bailey on his bbc 1xtra show in the space of a month, so this must be something special. the flipside has a similar organic & uplifting aesthetic. a strutting break is the base for a deluge of warmth in the shape of synths, strings, flutes, harp and vocals – an unusual sound palette for a drum & bass track these days but refreshing to hear. dj flight thought so and has aired it on one of her next chapter rinse fm broadcasts.

kokeshi changes the tempo this time offering two tunes from russias bulb. >tenderness< comes with an 80s vangelis vibe that offers the emotional aesthetic that kokeshi is known for. with its non 2 step beats it wont be recognisable as drum n bass despite having the same tempo as most d n b tunes. for the djs, catch the flip side which offers a dance-floor friendly yet uber deep feel from the d n b tune >heartless<

the time has now come for eklektisch to unveil release number 006 and a debut from melohman & javi bora (20:20 / upon you). staying true to the label s ethos, the pair harnessed the warmth of the summer and with flurry of piano chords, created another feel good dancefloor anthem in >you love you<.

token is 5 years old. i never planned to do anything special for this occasion. however, when i received these 2 new tracks from phase, all just fell into place. this release pretty much sums up what token stands for since day one. both tracks are fierce pieces of relentless yet deep techno, in-your-face yet very subtle rhythms, all credited to phases detailed drum programming, keen sense of atmospherics & sound processing.

kowton and tom dicicco, residing in bristol and manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. kowtons seems to come from house, perhaps also electro and garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. toms music is techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 bpm. with these distinctive styles the idea of a split ep might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each others originals on the other. tom diciccos original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. kowtons is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along. on the other side of the record, kowtons remix of toms original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. toms remix of kowton rounds off the ep with a return to stab driven techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing.

>hold on< has been given the inimitable touch of deep house master marcus worgull. a classically trained musician like kabuki, he has stripped the track and used jennas vocals stabs to create a exquisite minimal groove to stunning effects. rising drum and bass star eveson has been given >generation x< to remix, and his <ode to a rave generation< is exactly what it is: keeping the haunting synth loop throughout, slowing the track down to finally go back to a rave-friendly 140 bpm with vintage breaks, and making the most of paul st hilaires colourful voice. the result is as awesome as skreams recent >burning up<.
