its always been tricky predicting what firecracker recordings will release next, though few would have expected an ep of freestyle, darkside drum machine jazz and percussive drone from berceuse heroique, nous and bedouin regular healing force project. sounding like early 23 skidoo replayed on drum machines and samplers, theres much to admire about the hectic rhythms, foreboding textures and dusty samples at the heart of gravitational lensing. its unclassifiable and completely out there, paranoid, dense and intense, with the fizzing drums, mangled horns and metallic percussion hits of random walks just edging out the experimental jungle-jazz madness of apophenia in the top tracks stakes.

back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history melodiya, many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called magnitizdat (short of magnetic tape release). it began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. in the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj s mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. plus seven records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.

rezzett are arguably one of the trilogy tapes goto acts. the london duo has previously released a trio of impressive, off-kilter eps of fuzzy house and techno jams for will bankheads much-loved imprint. happily, zik zak is every bit as essential as their previous material, expertly blurring the boundaries between techno, experimental electronics, and distorted hardcore. while the drowsy-but-sweaty hey hugo all sampled vocal yelps, sweeping chords and clattering percussion is probably the most obviously ear-catching of the four cuts, theres plenty to get excited about elsewhere. check, for example, the intricate electronics and eyes-closed loveliness of the title track, and the fluid melodiousness of opener afyon or, for that matter, the comforting bliss of ep closer noklue.

2015 has been a busy year for soul intent. relocating from nottingham to bromley, releasing -the fruit club ep- on lossless in march, his -wanna fight ep- dropped on klute s commercial suicide in august, the sci-fi themed -replicant- marked lossless music s first digital only release in october and his -late night sleaze ep- has been awarded mixmag s dnb tune of the month (nov 15 issue). on top of all this alex is about to launch two (yes two!!) sub-labels for lossless music. the first of these is exkursions. exkursions will cater for the deeper, more experimental side of dnb & electronic music. though concentrating it s tempo focus around the 170 mark exkursions will also be taking explorations down into slower soundscapes. the first release is a 3 tracker from soul intent and the tracks have already turned the heads of respected selectors including doc scott, presha, loxy and logistics. we won t say much for than that, we ll let the music do the talking.

ive been involved in two or three major genres that are very different from each other, says vaughn robert squire from canada, better known as prison garde, who is making his true romance debut with our trep009. about his melody ep, he says: its gospel-influenced house stuff. its in line with the last couple records that i put out, but i feel like its a little more mature and that the quality of the recording is a lot higher than anything else ive done as prison garde. i recorded it at the phi centre in montreal - its a beautiful cultural center in the old port. ango and i locked ourselves in there and did a live record on an ssl in a big room.
