the second of two zentrum spinoffs is with us! as with the first, it comes loaded with four remixes. octo octa, vito & druzzi, cooper saver and turbotito, and lemonade all handed in top-notch reimaginings of tracks off jacques renault s debut lp, which came out just under a year ago, and they all somehow manage to be unique unto themselves while also sublimely bleeding into one another. octo octas rendering of mi casa samba serves as a propulsive beginning thats as dark and druggy as it is sharp and focused. vito & druzzis take on faith runs in a similar vein, but in a more stripped-back, drawn-out, and patient sort of way, it is nearly ten minutes long, so this is perhaps not a surprise. the b s remixes are brighter, sunnier, though that s not to say they re not bold. cooper saver and turbotito s redo of words has a certain funky swing to it that, paired with spacey synths and balearic bells and whistles, makes it ideal daytime disco fodder. the lemonade boys close the ep with their vibey take on faith. pads for days, a plump bass, and a focus on the original s sax make you wonder if the song itself somehow got stoned from a couple extra giant bong rips. a fitting way to end both the 12inch and the summer.

after showcasing the debut releases from the high on wye quintet (magic mountain high, soulphiction and steevio) and monoak, the freerotation label returns with a various artists 12” featuring four more artists intrinsically linked by the annual festival. anthony child, aka surgeon, has been a regular fixture since first appearing at freerotation in 2011. his recent exploration of modular synthesis and use of the buchla music easel has found a home in the ambient yurt at the festival, and equally has manifested in album projects such as 2015’s electronic recordings from maui jungle vol 1. “unconscious fearless determination” follows on from this more experimental, less dancefloor-focused side to child’s work, while still pulsing with the techno fundamentals that quickly defined him back in the mid ‘90s. duckett hails from north wales, and has been a key part of the freerotation fabric since the beginning of the event. after some releases on mindtours, mindyourhead and sthlmaudio back in the mid-‘00s, his music has started to reach a new audience through releases on untilmyheartstops and a clutch of lauded live performances. “breaks my heart when i remember that day” captures the alien synthesis and emotional heft that singles duckett out as such a remarkable artist. steevio is the co-founder of freerotation and mindtours records, responsible for a huge swathe of techno releases reaching back to the ‘90s. as well as his releases on mindtours, he has recently appeared on untilmyheartstops and in collaboration with pev on schmorgabsord, and is set to appear on russ gabriel’s new label rivers of groove. with its expressive swells of off-kilter melody and snaking drum lines, “pendulum” continues the thread of exploration steevio has been following on his journey into experimental modular techno. tom ellis has been prolifically issuing forth material in a soul-enriched space in between house, techno and funk for more than ten years. from running the acclaimed trimsound label to releasing albums and singles on telegraph, archipel, hartchef discos and more recently ethereal sound to name but a few, tom’s recorded work and immersive live performances continue to reach out to new moods and timbres. “as a take” finds tom at his most reflective, layering on dubby effects and organic instrumentation in a truly meditative end to the ep.

figure spc inevitably arrives at the alphabets last letter and therefore the end of what has been a most prosperous runtime and success story. already accountable for its first release a seven years ago, jeroen search has proven essential to the sublabels course with his many cornerstone contributions. this final, special extended release grants him the ample scope to tell the closing chapter in all proper detail. spread across two fully packed 12inches the dutch veteran producer wastes no time but lets his ever evolving array of machines do the talking.

everything i know and i will never know about you is a journey through electronica, deep-house and pop, driven by the endless and timeless sources of inspiration that are love and life. prior releases on powerhouses diynamic, get physical and third ear have pinpointed denites sound at the border of deep and tech-house but his long player debut is, sonically, a fresh new adventure. the spanish producer takes a developed and matured sound into deeper dimensions of self-reflection, exploring new sonori- ties while remaining loyal to his early influences with strong personal touches on drums and keys. everything i know and i will never know about you is a bold move for denite, who comes a step closer to achieving his artistic vision. tracks like when i go out and the art of letting go embody the albums innate dance-floor nature while songs like berlin see the spanish producer looking square towards new horizons and musical ambitions. club-friendly while staying geared towards the headphones, everything i know and i will never know about you reads like a bridge between two love stories with similar paths and mirroring endings. opening with the slow, pulsating sound of a heartbeat, it follows the universal cycle of the highs and lows of a relationship, closing on brighter promises and new potentialities.

one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!
