lady blacktronika aka “the first lady of beatdown” brings three solid productions with all in vain ep, the next instalment on bass culture records. discovered on myspace by mike huckaby back in 2007, lady blacktronika’s sound brings a gritty edge from her street days, while simultaneously oozing a unique female sensitivity. making an impressive transition from the days when the dj boys wouldn’t let her play with their toys, she runs multiple labels, sound black recordings, sound kemystry and is co-creator of cocaine records, as well as releasing on deep explorer, skylax, underground quality and now bass culture. jumping straight in with learn me baby, the a side sets the tone with a deep and pounding, powerful groove. the title track takes it up a notch, the most incessant of the package, built for that peak-time dance floor fury. while the techno undertones remain, lord knows is a beautiful swirling house number that infuses the ears and body. the common denominator in all cases is the resonating voice of lady blacktronika herself, adding the human touch… a touch of soul.

violet poison is the dark, enigmatic and esoteric side-project of francesco baudazzi, already known as obtane, co-owner with giorgio gigli of the defunct techno label zooloft. the new project is focused on analogue proto-techno with influences from 70s italian progressive bands like goblin or ost composers like fabio frizzi and earlier downwards records from 1994-1995.

one of las smartest young voices says the la times…which the artist suspects, may just be a covert way of saying la is dumb. “open” mike eagle wouldnt terribly mind, being born and raised in chicago where the painful winters and his uppity grandparents kept him inside as a youth. he spent his formative years watching alternative music happen on mtv and hoping to one day be able to audition for the native tongues. as a young adult after graduating with a degree in psychology, he did the next best thing and moved to los angeles, joining the project blowed collective where he made music and toured with busdriver, aceyalone, abstract, nocando, and more. he has also gained notoriety in the world of comedy by being invited by professional funny people (paul f. tompkins, hannibal buress, matt besser/ucb) to rap at their shows. he would like to be raps kurt vonnegut but recognizes that he would first have to create something as iconic as the four-stroke illustration of an anus. he practices by releasing rap albums that delight, entertain, and confuse.

rndm (pronounced *random*) is a new musical group featuring pearl jam bassist jeff ament, singer-songwriter joseph arthur and drummer richard stuverud. in april of this year, joseph arthur joined jeff ament and drummer richard stuverud in montana for a jam session, which would give birth to rndm *acts*. within an hour on that first night in the studio, the trio had bashed into shape an ament song called *what you cant control*. and after four days with longtime pearl jam engineer brett eliason behind the boards, the group had nearly 20 finished tracks, which were eventually whittled down to to 12 for this album. the double vinyl comes in gatefold sleeve and contains a download code.

listening to the sound of konfetti klub ensemble creates associations of those sparkling drops that run down the side of an ice cold drink on hot summer days. it’s a very refreshing and delicious listening experience, it’s both stimulating and soothing. if you think the formula brass players + club groove is somewhat worn-out, you will be pleasantly surprised. pomelo comes with bouncy offbeat rhythms, and when the trombone hits in there’s clearly an air of balkan sound. however, around the middle of the track it turns into a joyful freestyle session. mollono.bass puts a bit more emphasis on beats, bass and pressure in his version, in other words: even a bit more emphasis on the dance floor. rotwein und sommerverbot gives a groovy hint why konfetti klub ensemble describe their sound as live brass house – it’s extremely jazzy and casual, a live session rather than a programmed arrangement. even more so schwankel, as it vibrates effortlessly between intricate musical deepness and sheer to-the-floor euphoria. last but not least there is a track exclusively for the digital release: stranddub – beach dub. let’s put it like that: there’s a damn good party happing at this beach.
