march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

with their feet firmly positioned on dutch soil, the heads and hearts of dam swindle are nonetheless rooted deep into the soul of the motor city, and this ep of finely crafted grooves on jimmy posters and huxleys fledgling saints & sonnets imprint is as brilliant a reflection of their obsession as you could expect. >the wrap around< combines a killer vocal hook with a silky line, but its the bassline that marks it out, coming in with a thudding bassline that twists itself into all manner of unfiltered goodness at the halfway point. >pain tomorrow< meanwhile prefers to let its skipping percussion do the talking with a bumping chord led groove that would put mcde to shame. the ep is rounded off with a killer remix of the title track from deleusions of grandeurs pattern select, turning in a sparse reworking which transforms the light original into a throbbing piece of basement house.

one of the labels that caught our eye in the last months was lonesome hero. here their third release and its another quality one. a more then solid house track that kicks off with an intoxicating metalic bassline that hypnotically segues into the rasundas staple groove-heavy drums, with an achingly timeless piano peppered all over the top. on the flip-side, the boys over at campaign of love handle the remix duties. by tracking it out a bit, col have roughed up the original with a combination of strings and 909 snares, while keeping the spirit of the original mix alive with a snippet of its massive bassline.

as a new year starts naked & ashamed kick off their adventures in club land with a release from new artist james washington.in the nite klub is the a side, a powerhouse groover fit for peak time use whilst flip sides sweet utilises a tribal groove with a simple melody for an overall hypnotic feel.

second release on the wonderful supafrico records digs up and dusts off four more mega-rare nuggets of superb afro funk. first up is the excellent afro disco groove of kabbalas ashewo ara, a lost gem originally released back in 82 on tiny uk independent red flame and now featuring highly on many collectors wants lists. next is buaris im ready, a chunk of pure dancefloor dynamite with a driving disco groove and great funky synths, taken from the ghanian singer and percussionists awesome 1979 disco soccer lp. on the flip we get the mega-rare and totally essential body & soul, a magnificent 10 minute mid-tempo afro workout recorded in 1980 by nigerian funkster william onyeabor. last up is a great extended edit of the ashantis brilliant funky bubbler everybodys groove with its floor-filling groove and wicked vocals. these lovingly remastered rarities sound better than ever making this ep a must for anyone with a taste for those incredible funky afro grooves.

nice price deal !!! dro carey from sydney has been making waves for a while now, as both an audio and visual artist and journey with the heavy crystallises a disconnected ambiguity that defines its own melodic path like a red carpet slowly unravelling, only to be seen to have been cut up and slashed beyond recognition.

martin landskys outstanding form continues with his latest release on poker flat recordings–his first outing on steve bugs label since his stunning contribution to the‚jack is back ep earlier this year. with over 10 years of association with the label, landsky is a poker flat mainstay - and with this release, its not hard to see why.the composer is an atmospheric tech-house work out that kicks off with a tight and funky groove, and then expands into an off-kilter dancefloor bomb, with nagging synth lines weaving their way through the taut, finely- tuned production. on the flip,moodmusic main-man sasse adds a dubbier take on the track, pushing the drums up in the mix and teasing out the acidic riffs to full effect. expertly building the tension, the track resolves itself in an epic breakdown.

hotflush presents the debut 12 inch from belgian newcomer locked groove aka tim van de meutter. the young producer delivers three hypnotizing and genre bending tracks that expertly weave the sounds of berghain, soulful house and uk garage into a single crushing package. the >rooted< ep draws you in with the title track, bouncing along to an acid baseline, then moves onto >drowning<, a moody techno track that was included on scubas dj-kicks mix compilation, filled with drum and ambient samples taken from field recordings. lastly, >change<, a production that smartly melds classic house grooves with industrial techno, demonstrates locked grooves rhythmic finesse and long-term promise as an artist.

the tracks blend the best of booth producers, rachmads detroit influence shaped with lauxs dynamic style. the title track viking, is led by a synth that sweeps in an almost hyperventilating rhythm that raising the track with a series of industrial ticks and clicks that flavour the german, dutch and detroit mix. a dark bassline leads the track into its climax where glitchy synths squeak and stretch before the track drops. carlos is a track that bounces with groove. morse-like rhythmic bleeps carry the track cementing the individuality that is created in the ep. awash with sweeping sounds, the track gains a smoother feeling of deep techno demostrating their delicacy. 7tine is a juggernaut with a dark, heavy rhythm, showing the industrial power of the pairs production. flanged distortion scratching like fingernails give the track a tense edge, while simple yet powerful synths steer the ep into an eerie conclusion.
