ross alexander payne has always been interested in the earth and its relationship to all in its vicinity, this includes earths place within the universe, and the presence upon earth of both natural and manmade systems and processes. drift and expansion are tracks designed to represent a view of earth from space. it was previously believed that the earth was expanding and thus the continental land masses were moving as a result of this process. modern scientific evidence does not support this idea, and the theory of plate tectonics is now almost universally accepted. this ep represents a view of the idea of these two disparate theories as if taken from the direct space around earth. ross explains in his words >everything i do, be it music related or otherwise, is driven by this fascination with the universe around me, the quest to discover this universe and the desire to expand my knowledge of all within it<

this music works by releasing carbon dioxide gas into a batter through an acid-base reaction, causing bubbles in the wet mixture to expand and thus leavening the mixture. it is used where the batter lacks the elastic structure to hold gas bubbles for more than a few minutes. because carbon dioxide is released at a faster rate through the acid-base reaction than through fermentation, music made by chemical leavening is called >quick compositions. the tracks are made up of an alkaline component, one or more acid salts, and an inert starch (cornstarch in most cases, though potato starch is also used).

part three of the cocoon 10inch series is all about the modern british techno scene, and the first hypnotic exclamation mark is set by yousef from liverpool. after collaborations with carl cox and x-press 2, >come home< - which can also be found on sven väths current ibiza review >the sound of the tenth season< - seems to become one of the most important tracks of the winter season 2009/2010: with a steadily rising crescendo, yousef is weaving around a >strings-meet-piano< motive with massive reverb that gives the tribal beats a deeper meaning and thus will be enchanting the clubs. the flip side belongs to london-based dj and producer tim green. he is releasing on labels such as four twenty, sci+tec and trapez for more than three years now and his co-production with emerson todd, >exercise<, even made it to cocoon compilation i. >lone time< lives on metal-like percussions that are loaded with adrenaline and once more prove the fact that modern techno cant go without tribal elements

smaul recordings should not be suggestive of being fed by productions of acid pauli, only. however, creative times need being used and martin gretschmann - aka console - member of the notwist - alias acid pauli has collected lots of material whilst the scarce time left last year. on smaul 07 he follows his self-weaved red thread of the year. acid pauli confides more & more in a certain house rhythm paired with these melancholic layered sound-synthesis, already well known by him. astonishing things emerge out of acid paulis musical waves, sometimes even scientially croon quite a bit. nymbiotic (a) comes relaxed but holds a great melody up in the sleeve - seasonly peppered. symbiotic (b) rests bit on minimal house, but acid pauli never relied on that genre. thus, this track does not remain as it seems after three minutes. glitches and sounds break it up to evolve a new symbiosis. symbiotic becomes more timeless in spite of siren-climax peaks and an obsessive string chorus fading in the end.

the particular view on a musical future might have been considerably different when olaf hilgenfeld (berlin) met iftah gabbai (jerusalem) for first sessions in 2004. the piano player hilgenfeld used the accordion that time mainly, whilst gabbai was using all instruments available, a computer was among those more by chance. only one year later the duo skinnerbox played regularly on such uplifting, innovative off-partys that came up in the new techno generation again.
that was just the beginning. skinnerbox have developed a purely electronically composed and performed music (partly featuring vocals by elle_p) – that is not based on loops but improvised techno inspired house and minimal house. the roles in the duo are clearly settled: olaf hilgenfeld – moog synthesizer, iftah gabbai – hardware drum machines, max/msp und ableton live.
all these distinct impacts and effects can be heard on their various releases from the last two years, but far better in their live sets. skinnerbox are an experience, taking you on expedition with paralyzing minimal, breaking house, hard-edged techno-jazz, and ambient electronica futurism.
it was a desire to eternalize this play- & colorful diversity, often just caused by the moment, as entire homogeneity. thus, they needed to leave temporarily their environmental techno and minimal house scapes. >king of spades and marmalades< – the result – is a jazz opus wrapped into a disco suitcase. it is a reminiscence as well as going far ahead of daily musical habits, shown not at least by the order of tracks, do not starting with a stunning hit of the album, but with 20 minutes of challenge.

a frog on the beach jumping between the electric strength of detroit sounds and the splendor of cinematic atmospheres, a frog on the beach is 100% pure techno refinement and thus as irresistible on dancefloors as for homelistening. marco passarani invites the listeners to a long and delightful odyssey, gradually traveling from electro sounds harshness to classy house enjoyments.

since the year 2000, belfastian dj and producer phil kieran is providing us with a constant flow of outstanding records and remixes – among them for novamute and soma – with his energetic sound from the capital of northern ireland. not least has he gotten awareness with his alloy mental project on fatboy slims label skint. his new maxi for cocoon designs two blueprints of uncompromising techno between tradition and modernity. whereas the post-acid sounding a side can be indeed called >wasps under a toy boat<, displaying ongoing >wasp sounds< which are shifted against each other, the break- and bass-orientated b side >tartan paint< sets new standards regarding the sound abstraction beyond popular expectational attitudes. and thus stays a highly functional dj weapon for intelligent techno bashes.

for the third time adam proll has released a 12 for cocoon recordings. and just like in the two predecessors, >hummel< and >adamantido<, the native pole is at the pulse of time and, with >flight 407<, creates a beautiful and dreamy summer tech house track, which seems to be made for the forthcoming open air season. warm, soft beats are as skillfully and elegantly used as trippy half time snares and thus make the a side sparkle of life. in contrast to this, >abbadon< is more something for the neverending after hours of this summer. the warm and deep detroit sound reminds of sunsets at the beach and is bringing back this special feeling to the dance floor - may it be in frankfurt, berlin or everywhere else.

for the new album, liars and prayers, thalia has expanded upon her touring band of the last few years of daniel coughlin (drums) and david curry (viola, trumpet) to fill out the sound with the bass and piano of winston braman (consonant, sherperdess, fuzzy) and mel lederman (victory at sea). liars and prayers is the masterwork of her thus far impressive career. her voice and songs have never been stronger and the full band and the recording by andrew schneider (unsane, cave in) allows her to combine the delicacy of the arrangements of her trio with the force that was her band come. the very moving body memory is a poignant example of this perfect synthesis.

joel mull, another representative of the swedish techno community, releases his current vision of what is to happen on the dancefloors. it is different from what his fans know from the early days. with his debut single on cocoon >harmonautic string<, joel mull sends us to a journey through the track which is smoothly airy-fairy and thus perfect to dive into the land of dreams after a wild party night. even when speeding up after a short break with the drums dominating – the track remains harmonic and is designed to dance into the sun in the early morning hours. the b-side appears spacy and melancholic, but again, mull is able to layer his music so deep and brillant that the basic mood is still vicious with the track still coming along in a magical and elegant way. >blossom< is exactly the right thing for a cold winter night and reminds of the b-side of beyers cocoon release

its almost 4 years to the day that jeff samuels >throatwobbler mangrove ep< was released on karloff #03, and even today the four world hits of the record are getting digged out by djs, when the minimalism needs to either groove or jack again. so now with >return of the throatwobbler< theres finally an appropriate follow-up by the man from seattle.. erm.. berlin, after he’s impressively run riot in the meantime, on labels like spectral, trapez, poker flat, frankie and logistic. the a-side >terso< is shuffling and twirling and bouncing in such a winsome way that not many can master like jeff samuel. almost like an electric ray - left and right and left, and without letting any tempting gimmicks take the mind off the straight path. appropriately enough, >the spook< on the b-side comes along a bit more spookily, with a bassline twisting into the brain, ripped up by miniatures of bleeps and chords just in the right moments, and thus leading the track to an agile, exhilarated climax

alessandro crimi comes here with an incredible dub techno monster. one of these timeless tracks that youll find yourself spinning in 30 years. huge drums, classic dance appealing analogue sounds along with the rattling bulldozerfeeling bassline. get your backpack and prepare for a deep journey! chaton on the other side is drying things out, keeping all the elements and thus delighting us with a stunning beat as well as hes ever mid 90s techno synths stabs that just drives anyone shaking. a deep reinterpretation aimed for the capital t for techno enthusiasts out there

who needs an obtrusively acting kickdrum, when the decent wobbling bassline of breezin does the job just as good. right nobody. or, at least peter grummich (shitkatapult/ spectral/kompakt) doesnt, whose proverbial deepness constantly gets the floors into rapturous body rolling. thus it was just a question of time to welcome this man to karloff, the label for everything thats different. here, all medium dated orientation to felt (rather than experienced) standards is gladly left to other persons of great hope, whilst enjoying the border crossing between dorky monkeyshine and serious spirit of adventure. consequently, quick thinking misbehaviour is also the attitude of the (for formal reasons called) b side, where the horizon gets canvassed for both weird and life affirming sounds, in grasp of the groove. summarizing dance music to breathe deeply.

brother, the second track of reeads album take what you need was conceived in collaboration with guillaume françois & johann querne. this track has an unusual pop rock touch quite different from rewind, reeads first track selected to be on the official compilation of the 2007 winter music conference. brother is just as diverting & enchanting as the album. it reflects the artists will to widen its musical spectrum focusing maybe a little less on the electronic influence of his music and going back to the essence of it. brother thus features a steady voice accompanied by a strait guitar & an efficient bass line. without a doubt, the single and ep will conquer its audience thanks the several remixes that will rejoice the electro music fans. reead >brother< produced by reead written by reead, guillaume françois & johann querne.

alejandro mosso, aka funzion, was born in mendoza, argentina in 1983. a student of guitar and music theory since he was 14, he started his solo minimal house/techno project >funzion< in 2003. his aim is to combine the production techniques of idm and clicks and cuts with the rhythmicalbforms of techno and microhouse. the result thus far has been a tricky, warm and energetic sound that has caught the attention of highly regarded labels such as telegraph, sushitech, and now alphahouse. funzions >stelle< ep consists of two warm, intricate, and percussive club stompers that showcase his grasp on complex rhythms and playful melodies. >random kisses< is a moody vocal excursion into the mountains of your imagination. a meandering track that suits open air parties as well as it does big dark discos, this is a spring season hit. >random love< starts out as a charming shuffley ballad, only to subtly morph into a looming synth rave monster, all the while keeping its playful and hypnotizing grip on the dancefloor. bomb alert!

just as magnified record grooves reveal dust constellations and lunar landscapes, so too does godblesscomputers third album. solchi is a deep search into previous moments in lorenzo nadas lifetime, influenced by the presence and power of music. his process began with the recovery of some old cassettes, mixtapes nearly forgotten, audio recording of voices from his childhood, and lots of dusty jazz, soul, and hip-hop records. as the starting point of this travel merge with its end, past and present combine to form gbcs current sound. warm electronic production rooted by grooving bass lines form the core of a kaleidoscope of sixteen tracks, colored by synthesizers, guitar echoes, scratches, samples, fading voices and kalimba. the album is a collection of sixteen stories, sixteen soundscapes, each of them gbcs tribute to the path taken thus far, an homage to his love for music. the recording and studio work took place over a year, with the adding and subtracting of many elements.

two years ago i played at studio 9 in vilnius, lithuania. the following day i missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend linus, who took me to the contemporary art centre. it was there i spotted a book named ÔrojusÕ, that linus told me translated as ÔparadiseÕ. the word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. a few days after returning home, i turned on to a national geographic documentary named Ôdesigned to danceÕ, explaining the courtship rituals of birds of paradise. as i watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birdsÕ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. this gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these birds of paradise and their habitat. thus, rojus. leon vynehall 2016
