chaka khan, born yvette marie stevens, is an american singer-songwriter whose career has spanned four decades, beginning in the 1970s as the frontwoman and focal point of the funk band rufus. often dubbed the queen of funk, khan has won ten grammys and has sold an estimated 70 million records worldwide.
*what cha gonna do for me* (1980) is arguably the best effort of the partnership with arif mardin. slowly but surely the two began to craft an even more successful and innovative sound. the album peaked at #3 in the r&b albums chart of 1981.

in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are…

polymath james leyland kirby must surely have one of the most confounding cvs in the business: he spent years taking the piss out of the music industry with anthems rallying against the (vv)mcps, he notoriously fell out with various well known record labels for reasons you ll just have to google, goaded aphex twin with a series of tributes and channelled his love of everything from falco (rock me amadeus), chris de burgh, frankie goes to hollywood and stockport karaoke nights into a stream of increasingly bizzare 7 s back in the early noughties. but at the same time he was responsible for releasing some of the very earliest material from boards of canada (hell interface: 1997), made a ruck of frankly groundbreaking industrial electronic records, brought new beat to the worlds attention and, in 1999, made his first album as the caretaker, a project that would go on to release some of the most loved ambient/ lynchian albums of recent times.

often overlooked in american techno history are the weird and wonderful flavours to have emanated from the mid-west over the years. no two finer exponents have there been than minnesotas paul birken and freddy fresh. their contributions date back to the early nineties when freddy was exploring the possibilities of extreme techno (via labels like labworks, experimental and his own analog) - an activity that paul took up a while later after debuting on woody mcbrides renegade communique label in 1996. teaming up for the first of two collaborations on this 12 inch, paul and freddy open with >the fate of thirty eight< - a belting slab of analogue techno, where machines shriek and squawk like possessed animals on the loose.

with his debut ep >swinger<, the multitalent from central germany now wants to conquer the club scene. as dj and event-manager he already has filled the dancefloors. now his songs should do likewise. inspired by the infamous clarinet-grooves of the roaring twenties and biting trombones >swinger< connects the organic sound of hand-played instruments with crunching techno beats.

ancient future is the second collaboration between visionary pianist ryuichi sakamoto and electronic pioneer christopher willits. built around a series of piano pieces that sakamoto sent to willits after the release of the duos first record together, 2008s ocean fire, the six tracks that make up ancient future are entirely instrumental—and yet, they speak about the very essence of what it means to be human. as a whole, ancient future functions as a piece about the creation, acceptance and completion of ones fate and all of lifes experiences, following a trajectory through inner conflict, resolution and, ultimately, acceptance.

after the two stunning tenenement yard albums on eye4eye, altered natives comes back on bosconi releasing another strong three tracker ep full of pagan and mythological inspiration called >the fates<. as the artist says, this ep was based on the moirae, the 3 greek/roman goddesses who controlled fate. the greek word moirae literally means a part or portion, and by extension ones portion in life or destiny. they controlled the metaphorical thread of life of every mortal from birth to death, so each track as be named for each one of them.

although relish compilation 3 marks the third compiled label round up for headmans relish recordings, it is a compilation only in form, it has been constructed out of new tracks very much in the guise of an album. in label terms it highlights the new artists that have been unearthed this year – jr seaton, andreas esu, hannalelauri, daniel avery, international, montevideo – and presents them alongside new tracks from headman.

when some collaborations occur, it feels like fate has been paying close attention, planning something special. on one hand: bugge wesseltoft, pianist, composer and pioneer of electronic jazz, on the other: henrik schwarz, one of the most sought after producers of electronic music who has remixed stars from michael jackson to ane brun. this combination may not seem as radical as once it might, as in the days before bugges new conception of jazz, but the results most certainly are: this does not feel like your typical electronic jazz outing. its a super-group in microcosm. wesseltoft comes from a jazz background and has moved towards electronic music. he started on the ecm label with jan garbarek, and later collaborated with club music legends like laurent garnier and francois kervorkian on stage. schwarz comes from the chicago/ detroit techno culture, and performs at music festivals and in clubs on all continents. he has been moving towards the jazz and improvisation

this man cant currently be stopped. following his releases through the 2nd season 2009 (>marvin” on compost, >smaul 06< & >smaul 07<) in january 2010 acid paulis >riverboat tour< came out. now, it seems he opens this years summer season with these two psychedelic thrilling tracks. even though he had been touring a lot with the notwist last year, acid pauli was pretty often an invited, musically refreshing guest in berlins minimal techno (what ever) scene. den mahlstrom rauf leaves no doubts about. great build up he does by keeping tension over five minutes to unlash finally the madness charge with a levitating reverse-ducking-compressed melody. den mahlstrom runter (a play on words of travelling on a boat and getting milled…) seems to be the return from the trip he gives on side a. it is the same track reworked. his musical drama goes faster but deeper under the cortex – but >how lucky a fate< deliverance comes at right time taking the track over to a known housy and deep realm.
