he remoulded the garage template of the original into something more immediate, replacing the swung off-beats of the original with driving forward-rhythms and a clarity of purpose that takes absolutely nothing away from the musical impact of the original. this circulated on mp3 and we smiled and danced.
unexpectedly, in 2010 jb returned to >heartbreaker< for a different interpretation. this time around a more haunting approach was the order of the day with cross-fading strings creating a soulful, otherworldly atmosphere. the drop this time also swapped sub bass for punchy 808s. a tantalising further alternative that pointed the way to this vinyl release.

on the flip we have an the mysterious friends in lo places… an rnb/neo soul melter that harks back to blackbeards edit hey day and acts as a nice reminder as to why the name still rings true to many a soul aficionado.

translation recordings returns to vinyl with a pair remixes from two scene veterans, selected to provide a fresh perspective on the digital catalogue. up first, seba applies his signature style to furi angas >when our world jaded<, where twinkling hi-hats and dreamy pads drift into meticulously chopped breaks, spliced drum edits, and warm bass tones with enough low-end to rattle your chest. as the track progresses, a filtered reese surges in and out of the arrangement for added bite. on the flip, survival revisits slider & exposes jazzy >hooked< and rolls out a soulful remix with heavy, shuffling drums, deep sub treatment, and a techno midrange that complements the tracks more subtle melodic elements to deliver a refreshing and energetic tune for the summer.

manila fine vinyls is the label project created by edo arengi (shadow sync) back in 2010 to bring out that soulful side of techno we all love. unlike some freaks you can hear around nowadays, the manila fine vinyls productions have their roots in the original detroit sound: no frills, no virtual mockeries, just the full and deep analog sound that goes straight to your heart. music is a matter of substance, not of decorations! this second release includes two brand new tunes produced at the barricade, edos studio located in the heart of berlin. more feelings, with its electric piano chords and the moog bass line, is a well balanced blend of a fat groove and sweet azmospheres. techno with a little touch romanticism! i want to believe, a deeper tune built around a powerful, hypnotising sh-101 line with a delightful slide, is opened by touching string chords and grows as the various percussive elements are added creating a thicker rhythmic texture. its unsophisticated music, its the original spirit of techno.

something so personal which features vocals from rain phoenix comes from a collection of unfinished unreleased tracks and is a smooth soulful track. on the flip, what is false gets an extraordinary remix from machinedrum. another great installment of the 4 seasons series.

fantastic remastered reissue of the original solar sound 12 inch release of nightlife, a stone-cold rare groove classic from blackbyrds guitarist barney blair perry. an absolute gem of a record that has become one of the holy grails of the scene going for mega bucks on the rare occasions copies surface on ebay, discogs etc. recorded back in 1978, nightlife is simply stunning - with phat bass and a wonderfully soulful groove that never fails to ignite the dancefloor and superb guitar work from the masterful mr perry. if that wasnt enough, the flipside features the equally beautiful deep fusion sounds of >virgo princess<. quality music and an essential purchase

seiji – the much-lauded and respected producer from west london – returns with the penultimate part of his 2010-launched seiji series. having successfully explored a career path thats established him as a founding member of broken beat originators bugz in the attic, a key artist for the seminal jungle/d n b label reinforced, a downbeat solo artist for sonar kollectiv and a producer and co-writer for the brilliant roisin murphy, in 2011 seiji is a man focused squarely on the dancefloor. the seiji series is just one part of that with seiji stripping things right back, identifying each release with a simple number and putting all his energy into creating music that he truly believes in. a merging of sounds and influences that have always been with him, but have never sounded so right – encapsulating everything thats exciting about the underground uk scene at the moment. as with the previous two releases, seiji 4 is a double a-side focusing on the current uk house sound, a bit soulful, a bit funky a bit jacking, with two solid heavy grooves that are going to work on any house dance floor. no other has a really soulful vocal sample, a rolling reese bass riff and percussive uk house beats. easy is more of an infectious skippy house groove with a chunky bass hook and deep techno pads

the fried tofu crew follow up their excellent first course with another tasty selection! on the a-side sweet soulful voices catch you from the first try on. but dont be hasty, or you will burn your tongue. this is hot and far from being a dessert. after the first impression of sweetness, you will feel the spicy taste coming through. we all love that slight burning on the lips, making you really feel the feel. the first cut on the b-side digs even deeper into sweetness. somehow everything seems to be so lovely, each time this one is played out. its clear that even the ruff guys cant resist the taste of honey. real sweet and spicy, thats how its got to be. things are straightened out on the final cut, which finishes off the meal with a raw funk jam. the extended guitar groove gets back to the basics. sometimes few essential things, combined in the right way, can be all you need. a typical mistake when preparing a meal is to add too many different spices.

james blake returns to the label that gave him his debut release with two brand new sub heavy club tracks. hemlock were responsible for his air and the lack thereof single back in 2009. neither >order< or >pan< have appeared on blakes soulful, electronic self-titled album from this year, the new material sees the return of blake into the more sparse, experimental and wobbling bass heavy sound of his earlier work
