before boogie funk had a resurgence in 2012, ruckazoid was dropping rare funk albums in 2004. his demos were floating around la, but it wasn’t until 2009 that breakbot remixed ruckazoid’s original “life’s fantasy”, which was later released in 2011 as an original track titled “fantasy” on ed banger records. fantasy became a breakout hit scoring a #1 single on itunes. in 2013 when daft punk released “get lucky” featuring pharrell, funk was officially back in the mainstream. those in the know knew breakbot & ruckazoid helped rekindle the funk flame worldwide. after all, the label ed banger is headed by busy p, and busy p managed daft punk. suprinsingly, ruckazoid did not tour with breakbot, opting to stay in the studio to record more albums. amazing lover being one of these albums, with love game becoming the lead track.

youthstar joined camo & krooked in 2011 for their “cross the line” and “zeitgeist” tours. at the same time, he began to work closely with chinese man. invited for special shows at the beginning, they continued to work more and more closely together and has now become the official rapper/mc of the group.

next up on aus music is the welcome return of a good friend and label regular - the ever ascendant marquis hawkes. having released 4 eps on aus thus far, he makes his return in the form of a blazing, floor-focused 2 track ep which sits neatly with previous outings on the label. ‘the basement is burning’ takes it’s name from a near-fateful experience stemming from an electrical fire in hawkes’ home which culminated in him and his family being evacuated from a 5th floor balcony. having ensured the safety of his family, he made a dash across berlin to make a 10am live show, a few days later with the power back on ‘the basement is burning’ was born. the title track kicks off with splashy, live drum samples that are armoured with electronic layers before a feel-good piano lick glides into the mix. bursting synths are introduced before ducking strings chords bring the track to an ecstatic conclusion. ‘tower block boogie’ then tumbles short funk samples through bold drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout.

situationism brings you a deep soulful house release by bittersuite and andre espeut. ‘these thoughts sees bittersuite take the undeniably soulful vocals of andre espeut & melts them over a delicious deep house groove, warmed with chords & brought to the boil by a jazz funk fuelled live bass line. julian sanza brings his unique production style with this deeper edged, conga driven remix, building a truly hypnotic boogie experience, taking the vocals cleverly into a more dubstyle vibe. situation take things a little more straight up deep soul house with sharp beats over a real fat old school synth bassline covered with the deepest chords, warm synths & of course andre. dan d3 delivers a moving house dub remix that hauntingly draws you into its infectious filter heavy trancelike groove …built for late night shenanigans.

(vinyl includes download code) in 2013 he dropped a classic with ivan ave called breathe on kingunderground records. warmth is his debut solo album following a long line of singles, collaborative albums, cassettes and load of independently released projects. the album has 16 tracks made from jazz, soul and boogie samples with gritty drums and a dash of synth stabs, mixed by fred and mastered at strype audio in oslo by christian obermayer. the title track warmth is the last track on the album and was sampled from a live recording off one of fred’s favourite jazz records that is always on heavy rotation at the crib. guests at the table include med (stones throw), mndsgn (stones throw), ivan ave, (jakarta), moruf, koreatown oddity (stones throw), chester watson and more.

released in 1983, guy cuevas 12inch single -obsession- is probably one of the best french disco-boogie records, enriched by jean-paul goude s artwork for the cover. the a-sides nassau mix by fran?ois k is a sensual and airy journey, while the b-side s london mix offers a more realistic approach that will please the more classic-listening disco enthusiasts. huge tip!!
