what initially started as idea for a dj-duo project quickly turned into a new production outlet for german producer david hanke. he is well known for his northern jazz, funk and afrofunk productions under various monikers ever since his first release back in 2008. the most recognized surely is his renegades of jazz-alias.
after starting to fully embrace the afrofunk vibe with his 2016-released renegades of jazz album moyo wangu as well as two dem juju poets singles in the same year it’s now about time to release “liberated thoughts” - the longplay debut for dem juju poets.
having spent an influential part of his childhood in arusha, tanzania and engrained the music of east africa, his sound combines these influences with modern, more club-orientated electronic afrofunk productions which defines the core sound of dem juju poets.
with “liberated thoughts” hanke refines his afrofunk vision for 2017 informed by his experience as a dj in venues all over europe which naturally led to a more floor functional production approach.

it really feels like we (aka mad mats & tooli) have been around way longer than 5 1/2 years with local talk, but it s really true what they say, time flies when you re having fun! from what started as a somewhat simple and almost primitive urge to create a small house imprint has now grown into a much bigger affair. we really tried hard to keep the label from getting stuck in any genre (remember 90s house?) and to always keep the local talk relevant, curious, diverse and with a healthy dose of underground mentality. from our very first release with bassfort s excellent moon shadow in the summer of 2011, we had a crystal clear vision of what local talk should represent...house music in any way, shape or form! over the years we released soulful, disco, jack, afro, vocal, deep, jazz, tech, latin, old school, acid, uk, berlin, new jersey, detroit and of course chicago inspired house music. if it made us bump...we put it out! this brings us up to today and about +80 releases later. we thought about how we best could sum up these first 5 1/2 years and immediately the image of blaze s classic album 25 years later popped up. besides the fact that it s an amazing album cover it also a good representation when different musical genres fuse together. it s not strictly a house album but just as well a r&b, reggae and soul album. this fusion and variation of house sounds is something that we ve tried to capture on our 5 1/2 years later compilation, split into two parts. on part 2 you ll find a high energy disco rub from parisian s3a, a truly deep and soulful vocal jam from boddhi satva & sly johnson, a deep uk garage production from smbd (aka simbad), a dark and electronic affair from toto chiavetta (yoruba) and finally a musical acid number with that magical bristol touch from newcomer marcel lune. all in all we think we got most angles covered and hopefully this album will make you spread that chalk on the dance floor and get down...local talk style

new lands, released in 1997, was album proper no 3, described by pearce as “phase two” of the fsa project. it found pearce operating alone and finally realising the guitar sound that had been in his head all along. “something like ar kane’s god-like up home!,” he revealed in an interview at the time. it was a stark and often challenging listen (pearce stated in one interview that it was originally going to be called fuck you!), yet utterly beguiling.

for his 2nd ep on the parisian label ondulé recordings, dj un*deux decided to surprise us. with -tool for fools-, his hip hop background is talking......with -two for bass- that s the dark side of dj un*deux, the kind of track you keep preciously for the peak time when you need a jumpin bassline... and finaly with -groovy vapes-, this is a pure soul cut that ends the trip.

loft records returns after a fruitful year to kick-start 2017 with three infectious cuts from rising irish talent hammer. the belfast-born producer is well known for his lauded releases on feel my bicep (in collaboration with the label founders) as well as optimo music but production isn t his only facet. hammer has shared dj booths with the likes of hunee, sasha, midland, craig richards and nd_baumecker, whether at his residency at sub club or at his many gigs throughout europe. with loft recordings reflecting on a prosperous 2016, including a class two track release from isaac tichauer, followed by a chart topping remix package featuring hackman, dorsia, lancelot and bicep, hammer s innovative contribution to the imprint looks to follow suit. soaring pads and intricate drums form the overall aesthetic of canna but as the track progresses serene melodies and subtle snare rolls come together to form a harmonious eruption of synths. manaka then shifts to syncopated percussion and spectral nuances before man ray delivers distorted atmospherics and twisted chord sequences to conclude the package.

the first release from new vinyl only label cherub records. the ‘figure of state’ ep features four tracks: two original cuts from london upstart william earl in analogue work out mode. doppelate’s remix of the ‘figure of state’ on the a-side is an down-tempo, atmospheric trip whilst pépe’s remix of ‘stokey waltz’ takes us into blissfully uplifting, arpeggiated territory.

freda & jackson’s msh002 is the second offering from sydney’s moonshoe records and their first ep on the label as a duo. in 2016 the two beat-makers burst onto the scene and further-introduced the label with a pair of singles, persius & sumluv to a warm response at home and abroad. msh002, although predominantly house-cuts, sees the pair draw largely on their hip-hop influences with a heavy use of sample chops and and raw percussion. the 5-track maintains an emotional undertone of sadness from front-to-back while each tune holds up as a stand-alone journey.

bror records presents its third instalment with a split 12-inch record with two original tracks. delivered from the west coast of sweden, city of gothenburg.
arkajo (genius of time / aniara recordings) returns for the a side offering with the highly effective five minute break workout “vamp”. a track initially presented as part of arkajo’s live set now finally sees the light of day as part of this vinyl. on the flip, bror presents the debut of dj lily, who comes through with the atmospheric techno trip “folia”.

folamour was responsible for one of the dreamiest, most colourful deep house records of recent times - the brilliant shakkei ep on all city so hopes are naturally high for this excursion on the producer s recently launched fhuo records. he kicks off proceedings with the thrillingly addictive very first touch, where dreamy pads and looped party samples cluster around a snappy, jazz-fuelled house groove, before ratcheting the energy levels up a notch or two via the rubbery slap bass, driving drum machine beats and warm rhodes chords of alerte a babylon. in between, you ll find pravis l estaque, a stomping deep house floor-burner blessed with some seriously good, jammed-out electric piano solos.

the fourth release on bjarki and johnny chrome silver’s bbbbbb records, comes hot on the heels of the first. two and three are limited run, vinyl only, hand stamped releases to be sought out from your local dealer. bjarki returns as cucumb45 with the 5-track ep ‘something weirdcore’. on the surface there are elements of jungle, breakbeat, techno and rave, but to say this spans genres would be an understatement – it defies them. the title track instantly commands attention with breaks samples offset against indecipherable robotic groans and melancholic chords, but a sudden change of drum pattern shows this is more than a reprieve of known territory – it’s a voyage away from the limits of tempo and genre. this theme is explored throughout the ep by way of unnerving stripped back techno (akureyri), electro with subtle inflections of dancehall (comatack) and even a big beat/dub influenced jam (music for advertising). as cucumb45 plays with genres as we know them, so he does with the emotional resonance of the release. frequently switching from euphoric to anxious, each track is a testament to his incredible attention to detail. simply put, this is music for those who hate to be labelled.

22.02.85 is the new album from bastien keb. initially conceived as a concept album about a stripper lost in the city (like a straight-to-video follow up to showgirls), 22.02.85 has a distinctly nocturnal edge to it. the city at night, lost in a crowd, abandoned petrol stations, empty kebab shops, broken florescent lights. like a half-forgotten dream, familiar yet unnerving. he says all the songs are all about girls apart from two about a big lug. you may catch a phrase here and there but the context is all in the feel: there s a melancholy edge, but i don t wanna depress people. sad but hopeful? if that s possible.

“mirror test” conjures that rare mood between darkness and elation, contemplation and celebration, and drives it home with an infectious, jacking rhythm section which recalls the late-80s ny club music of boyd jarvis and paul simpson, and labels like easy street and fourth floor, but imbues the sound with a toughness and precision only possible today. analog synth figures, glassy and angular, ricochet around the track, trading jabs with funky snare work and robotic, stabby chord patterns to create a hook-laden machine groove which demands repeated listening.
the record’s b-side feature, “replace yourself,” is the subtler, dreamier, more futuristic of the two. unmistakably urban with its swinging, bottom-heavy groove and strange, architectural chord work, it seduces and transports. “replace yourself” dares you to do exactly that.

lynn williams may not be someone you have heard of but her pedigree is strong. her father was hank ballard (of king and james brown fame) and her mother was 60s miami radio personality and dance group leader vanilla miss boom boom williams. lynn cut 5 excellent 7inches for various henry stone owned miami labels in the 70s here we present her two most collectable. the first it takes two is a smokey deepfunk killer. on the flip dont be surprised is one of miamis best ever deep soul records period, a dark serious ballad pulled off with amazing emotion considering her young years at the time of recording.
