bolivian - born dj s, producers and duo animal print ( aka lecter and marco cuba ) are covering a wide spectrum of sonic and artistic possibilities, from the minimalist, bouncy original mix of -kites for august,- elegantly playing with a mixture of uplifting and dark vibes, to the extremely reduced and highly effective thunders, the relentless, almost epic red moon, and the percussive, hypnotic by orion each track can be appropriate for a different situation, but in the end they are all aiming for the same goal: to create an absorbing soundtrack for unifying experiences on the dance floor.

for the first reference, sounds of the city is happy to welcome the mysterious spirit of the black 808, responsible for one of the hottest pieces of wax in 2013 for eargasmic recordings in chicago. invasion of the black bass is also following the eargasmic record in terms of style. it s warm in every way and infectious. let s get invaded with invasion of the black bass and invasion of the black house. both tracks share the same chords grid, one could be a reinterpretation of the other. both are very warm and melodic. frenzy in firenze on the other side demonstrates sb8s skills for groovy tools and more dj oriented tunes.

darkel is the solo project of jean-benoît dunckel, who is also known as half of the french duo air. his first solo album came out in 2006, at the same time as charlotte gainsbourgs 5:55 album that he produced alongside with his acolyte from air. as well as participating to mythical soundtracks with air (virgin suicides, lost in translation, marie antoinette, quartier lointain, pioneer), jean-benoît composed the score of bee, je mappelle hmm, and also the quirky film cyprien but always in a very organic and solar electronic spirit.

on the first release for mannella on his own imprint, the ice is broken by generous strings and subdued synths. revisiting “space candyman” with his distinctive stamp, marieu blows up every emotion in a swirl of high spirited techno. the b side displays all the intensity of this release, starting by the pure beat of the original mix. lucretio s remix is a mighty vision of “letters from mars” with a dogged bustle of reverberated drums and filtered chords. consider a tree for a moment: we just see and enjoy its beauty, but it must develop its roots under the ground to bloom all its beauty and grows up strong. in much the same way, jt series sinks his particular sound in a ground covered music grove. so, the fruits of our tree, are a collection of sounds thought out of the box. mannella, that runs this berlin based label, never stop explores the vast world ingrained in his machines. a sensorial techno contaminated by the most varied influences.

the australian dj, producer and musician jad lee likes to have several irons in the fire all at the same time. for instance hes a member of mitzi (along charles murdoch and dominiqe bird), one half of the pan-pacific indiepop duo twiggy lashes and a solo artist known as jad & the ladyboy. under this moniker he releases music which can be described as soulful house with plenty of disco influences. for never come back down jad had singer mark borgazzi in his studio to cut a precious, groovy two-stepper into a genuine pop diamond. in order not to get only radio airplay, but also to be played out in gloomy underground clubs with extra fat subwoofers yannick provides his homicidal sexfactmix. with its untamed bassline and a milling-machine like synthesizer this feels like an unchecked punch to the gut. there will be blood on the dancefloor!

paul cottams ruff draft label enjoyed a great first year in 2014, delivering white-hot material from the man himself, lk and romansoff, amongst others. for the imprints first missive of 2015, cottam has recruited cardiff-based rising star chesus, who previously impressed via releases on local talk, 4 lux and catapult. theres naturally much to admire, from the acid-era electronics, delicate synth strings and shimmering chords of opener orbicular, to the dj gregory-ish stabs, wonky electronics and dense, organic-sounding percussion of wyw. bristol-based producer owain k - best known for his hook-ups with jamie anderson on dessous - lends a hand on let it happen, a rather fine slice of warm, immersive, balearic deep house goodness seemingly inspired by the vangelis classic of the same nam

the music strahil velchev alias kink creates for the 12-inch format is as playful and fanciful as it is functional and precise. his first outing for running back is no exception. inspired by the hardware of the same name, his cloud generator ep makes the most use of that. computer nerd symphonies and cyberpunk melodies for clubs, roofless raves and virtual racing games. wilhelm reich and william gibson would enjoy this. oh, and there is a breakbeat mix on here as well.

hardmon london is back with its fourth release, signed by the mysterious jay green. the concept is still the same: the achieved sound as most important element and obviously, it goes without saying, forget using a computer if you want to join the hardmoon london crew.

hot on the heels of introducing a new chilean talent to the mos ranks with its last release, the dutch label starts another international affair for its mos deep offshoot: romanian andrew red hand. andrew, who has been called the romanian underground resistance, has a long history of djing and making detroit inspired techno and electro and across four tracks here, his analogue house with crisp drums and searing acid all burst out of the speakers and into your affections.

midgar is proud to introduce a newcomer for the third release. a great debut for the maltese cloned, delivering not less than 4 cuts with sapphire 1990 e.p. the record, way more straightforward and groove centered than the previous midgar outputs, opens with sapphire 1990, track that sounds like very nostalgic memories from a timeless rave. thanks to a genuine simplicity and the great arrangement of its elements, this first cut has the perfect characteristics to become a dancefloor anthem. on the same side, a live out-take from cloned’s repertory, the pendulum swinging synth-lines which dominate pretty direct rhythmics filled with hi-hats and claps over a costant background noise. belgassem as the first cut on the b side, is an absolutely heavy one for the label’s standards, made of deep kickin’ drums and haunting voices empowered by a really strong and obsessive acid-line. closing the vinyl, the slow (and again really acidic) submerging is like a lysergic vessel headed to more comfortable dimensions, where groovy drums are embraced by very bright heavenly pads. sudden death is instead a chilled-out broken beat interrupted by confused speeches and detroitish pads, resulting as a modern ritual of ascension towards higher spheres. corel drives the release to the end, recalling most of its main features: a restless run through misty soundscapes along a path studded of bells and overwhelming, sharp hi-hats.

the km editions series, admirably helmed by the mysterious keyboard masher, has always been one of the more interesting re-edit/rework labels. past installments have touched on krautrock, disco, balearica, funk, italo and what can only be described as electronic oddities. this sixth volume offers up three more impressively remixed, overdubbed and reedited gems. theres naturally much to admire, not least the omd style woozy synth-pop of stolen shapes (stealing rework), which should tickle the fancy of anyone of a balearic disposition. the same can be said about the immersive, sun-kissed pianos and shuffling grooves of -astral playground. there s also a chunk of silly but, perversely, rather good french cod-reggae in the shape of le cod-, arguably our pick of a strong bunch.

wenn bonobo am 28. november 2014 im legendären londoner alexandra palace auftritt, kommt die epische und wegweisende tour zu seinem letzten album *the north borders* zu ihrem ende. dann haben simon green und seine band über 290.000 kilometer zurückgelegt und 175 shows vor insgesamt über 2 millionen menschen in 18 monaten auf 3 kontinenten in 30 ländern gespielt! aus diesem anlass wird ein live-album als 2x12 lp + mp3 veröffentlicht - eine vollständige (und wundervolle) aufzeichnung der *the north borders*-show.

in the late 60s early 70s many american soldiers where stationed all over germany. among those where musicians who played in several army bands like the east of underground who recorded a now sought after album after they had won the special services entertainment showband contest held in frankfurt in 1971. nobody knows which other bands participated in this contest, maybe also the soul explosion which were stationed in augsburg, upper bavaria. around the same time, a man named charles held opened a club in augsburg town called tarantel. furthermore he was running a record label of the same name on which he released a handful of 7inch singles from different, local bands, mainly not funky at all though. the soul explosions release remains the only one in the field of american soul & funk music. the band recorded a fantabulous double sider, one deep funk side with a soulful ballad on the flip which makes both hardcore funk and soul collectors happy. unfortunately there is no more information available about the band, only that they even performed live at the tarantel club.

listen to this if you like max graef, boo williams or anything on chiwax, atjazz, dam swindle or fantastic man. were really happy to get andy on heist after his successful collab with his buddy max graef on the jungle ep back in 2013. he delivers a great 4-track ep that ranges from the synth-arp love affair of ‘the same for me, to the heavily sampled disco jam ‘epsilon girls. check out ‘hermano and ‘merkin for a dreamy old school chicago vibe, both done with a great sense of history and an added touch andys modern production and sampling skills. sincerely yours, lars & maarten
