we are delighted to announce the wagon repair debut of montreal native stephen beaupre. one half of crackhaus, a long time collaboration with deadbeat, stephen has recently released solo material on labels from musique risque and ~scape, and put out his debut album on mutek’s own imprint in 2006. in honour of the great ancient persian empire, ‘achaemenid’ roams stridently with tight kick, clangorous melodic cascades and prodding rhythmic tones. ethereal string pads and moaning atmospherics imply conflict, narrated by catchy vocal passages from beyond the murky depths. a reverberant rhythmic synth line injects life into ‘lotus eaters’, with static vocal samples and penetrative melodic tones forming sonic structures around deep tom and rattled hat. grossly intoxicating, elements lull into a mellow haze before reanimating into a wildfire finale.

on their introductory minus ep, click box offers a refreshing return to a bygone era of classic instrumentals, full of experimentation and passion generated by that ongoing love affair between man and machine. berlin shades starts out in a jittery minimal fashion but soon dives much deeper as the tough electro bassline expands and contracts dragging the dancer to and fro. the cascading hook and in-your-face sci-fi synth motif add a sense of tongue-in-cheek drama to a dynamic arrangement that incorporates steep inclines, sharp drops and snaking pathways. as the short staccato bass riff gains momentum and the hook comes round for the second time you just know somethings lying in wait and the boys certainly dont disappoint. lost road is anything but a blind alley, kicking off with some low-slung interplay between a two-note bassline and a whiplash snare that dishes out a serious spanking. hi-hats fizz across the audio spectrum, cleverly pitching up and down before a drunken bass sequence ushers in the main section with its sliding, twisted synth distortions primed for surprise and immediate disorientation. once all the elements are in play, the fun really starts with so many objects of interest competing for attention. the arrangement is pulled and pushed to great effect extracting maximum effect from this tough little unit. more electro flavour to the fore as the loose, broken beat intro and robot sounds of some toys make for some slick moves on the dancefloor. the retro synth riffs and dark spiralling pads conjure up images of some early 80s lab full of computer kids in white coats twiddling knobs on huge mainframe monoliths. the bouncing bass and analogue belches make this a must for all retro-tastic electro-boogie fans. the theme continues over into voxer as rising filtered bass tones playout over another trademark click box drum pattern, this time doused in heavy reverb and delay. an array of analogue bleeps, screams and laser beams keep the motor ticking over.

the first single from her upcoming wagon repair debut album and her first release of 2009, dinky (aka alejandra iglesias) is ably following up on the momentum gathered from her 2008 album may be later on vakant. in a decade of releases on labels from cocoon and traum to carpark and crosstown rebels, dinky continues to cement her place amongst technos most enterprising producers with four new tracks. opener wind mesmerizes with repetitive keys looped over a straight kick. chirped tones pulse curiously amidst descending melodic chimes in a steadily evolving elemental journey that equally evokes reich and contemporaries (and new label mates) cobblestone jazz. outro establishes territory with intoxicating arpeggio melodies, while wet hair plunges us into submarine depths. dripping with resonance and reverb, sporadic metallic tones color a dense mix of murky pads and sharp beats. interrupted briefly by an epic symphonic interlude, wet hair continues its descent into deep and dark territories to close. the eps closer, butterfly floats with squeaked melodic tones and breathy vocals taking lead over a busy percussive base. saturated with a variety of sounds from indigenous samples to wobbly bass and deep detuned keys, butterfly takes us on a winding scenic route, disorienting and enchanting in equal measure.
