in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are…

nerolis quest for unique sounds this time leads to shannon harris of urbanicity. his rare previous releases being a favourite here at the neroli headquarter. the chicago artist delivers an spacey electric version of his classic kinetic energy, while on the other side he goes real spiritual with the incredible suite that is into the light. you will be entranced by charles stepneys grand daughter brandice manuels divine voice and then brought back to funk in a way that once again proves shannons originality.

those who have been following the cosmology series from its inception will no doubt be familiar with the ad hoc release schedule and will perhaps have grown accustomed to the diverse range of styles that their eps encompass. each one has trodden a different path in the pursuit of updating pivotal dancefloor memories and cosmology volume four is the most ambitious reworking to date. the choice for this instalments source material is a topical one as the influence here comes from herman sonny blount, better known as the free jazz pioneer sun ra.

subspecies is here to stay. the spanish label repeat the formula of its first release: spanish and international artists, three original tracks and one remix. this is the volume 2 of the north gate series. the ep includes a special track produced by tomohiko sagae & h. paul exclusively for this release called different species, a great industrial track by delusions (ballistic) and the remix by kike pravda (senoid) of the original produced by demon.i/o. like the earlier release, it is published in special 180 gram vinyl.

what better way to follow up andy meechams (chicken lips / emperor machine) huge gino fontaine originals than a duo of remixes from balearic chieftains pete herbert & stratus as one half of reverso 68 alongside phil mison, and in his own right pete has been behind a ton of mesmerising sunrise and sunset workouts, and he’s more than delivered here - crisp and club ready percussion, those stark punk-funkin’ guitars and his trademark synth work all conspire to cook up a storm on the floor martin jenkins and mat anthonys stratus outfit (remember their superb *spring tide ep* on aficionado last year ?) take a pop at the sublime konkondo on the flip and what a masterpiece it is ! a ten minute, utterly absorbing and expertly evolving piece, which flips the darker elements of the original into a mesmerising, cinematic, early 90s style balearic epic.

sandwell districts rrose launches a new label with a follow up to >motormouth variations<, last years unlikely collaboration with legendary improviser and synthesizer pioneer bob ostertag (named one of 2011s top 50 albums by the wire magazine).
for the debut release on eaux, rrose searched through ostertags cassette archives to discover a lost gem of studio improvisation from 1977. >the surgeon general< sees the barely post-teen bob ostertag exploring feedback techniques with an early buchla modular synthesizer, tape delay, flute and violin. the results are uncharacteristically moody, spacious, and well ahead of their time. on the flip, rrose provides two new revisions. >no child left behind< is a noisy and hypnotic acid-laden beast designed for dancefloor damage, while >her insides laid bare< takes the original into murky subaquatic territory. look for much more to come from rrose and eaux in the coming months.

ronald burrell s second release as equation on nu-groove is as deep as it gets. we re talking late night nyc back room deepness, often imitated but never bettered. -i ll say a prayer 4 u- is the lead track here, a sublime longing synth groove with a nagging bassline and crisp rimshots, a total -under the radar- anthem straight out of new york city circa 1991 and engineered by the equally as legendary bobby konders, a real undercover gem. the other two cuts on the ep drive further into the night, -domm domm, yeah mm hmm- is another dope basement groove, rocking some classic burrell flavours, and -my life- is a real down-tempo piece that reappropriates the roy ayers classic -my life in the sunshine- while giving it a real -100 bpm house- swing, don t snooze... all in all this is another classic release from the nu-groove vaults, re-mastered and re-pressed here for the first time in conjunction with nu-groove records and the burrell brothers. essential.
