in 1988, on the eve of a two decade civil war, somalia s authoritarian ruler siad barre launched punishing air strikes on the north of the country, known today as somaliland, in response to agitations for independence. the bombing leveled the entire city. barre targeted radio hargeisa to prevent any kind of central communication system that could organize a resistance. with the attack imminent, a few brave radio operators and dedicated vanguards of somali culture knew the archives, containing over half a century of somali music had to be preserved. thousands upon thousands of cassette tapes and master reels were quickly removed from the soon-to-be targeted buildings. they were dispersed to neighboring countries like djibouti and ethiopia, and buried deep under the ground to withstand even the most powerful airstrikes.

lovefingers heard the atmospherian years ago on milk beach settlers, a promo-only mix cd comprised solely of australian artists, mixed and released by seminal melbourne dj duo and good friends hey convict! its been a year or two since we featured a 12- single release from a new project. so hear at bearfunk we are really pleased to be releasing a cracker of a track. -gong bong-. it is from the caribbean house who are a new(ish) italian collective based around the core members of billy bogus & ferderico bologna. the original is one part slo-mo disco, one part psychedelic moondance and one part sci-fi horror movie. the track begins with swirling bass guitar and grinding synth before layering on a waft of sound effects and spooky keys. if the first two thirds of the track is a caterpillar then the last third is a butterfly as uplifting riffs and swirls of layered keys bring things to a crescendo. fellow italians the mushrooms project are up on remix duty first of all. they strip back the layers and concentrate on the growling bass and locked on pulsating synth. its back to the uk for the second remix where label honcho stevie kotey gets his percussion out for a drum, timpani and swing remix. stay tuned for more from the collective on bearfunk shortly.

bringing his signature sound to crosstown rebels, delightfully unconventional producer sis delivers his third release on the label, the blind side. hot on the heels of his boabab album on mobilee, rodriguez jr. delivers a stunning remix on the b-side. the blind side is set to soundtrack the summer, an incredibly infectious track with its exotic and intricate drum workouts and alluring vocal cuts. on the flip, rodriguez jr. brings in deep pads, uplifting melodic keys and a storming piano lines for a whole new take on the original. taking his artistic enthusiasm from his turkish father, sis grew up in berlin surrounded by music. following a series of releases on nick curly’s cecille, ricardo villalobos who loved his track trompeta so much that he released it on his boutique label picked up the german producer sei es drum in 2008. his success of trompeta led to an avalanche of recognition, groove magazine and ‘newcomer of the year’ by raveline mag named him both ‘producer of the year’. in 2011 sis launched his own label cocolino where he released his debut three-part album dejame. olivier mateu aka rodriguez jr. grew up in the south of france and moved to paris as a young adult and soon formed the electro group the youngsters. signed by laurent garnier to f communications, the duo released two albums and a string of successful singles. focusing on a different alias, rodriguez jr. gave olivier the freedom to run with his creativity, which can be seen in his acclaimed live shows.

the people in fog are back on sov! as smooth sky blue colour cat can represent, this ep has a smoother beat than the artists usual style. if you remember their previous ep with a darker colour, now the punching kick and identical house bass are gone and this ep is true showing off the producer s ability as a musician who can adapt to any kind of diversity. the first track last song has deep bass and atmospheric sounds, like a typical romanian loop, but after the long trippy beat when the piano sounds kick in, the atmosphere changes and brings back the emotion. the second track get funky is also truly hybrid version of house, while the combination of funky vocals and the endless hi-hat and shaker keep the groove tight and the deep down pad sounds mixed smoothly with the forest of beat make for a truly a unique character. the last track alright is a very joyful one, even though it uses a typical funky house vocal sample. its unique way of playing percussion and vocal keep the groove totally all-right

elizabeth merrick-jefferson is one of those artists who seem low-key. theres not a lot of information about her, if any, except for the existence of the first two records and a lone interview. one released in 2013 and the other in 2014. listening to either record tells you her music might be a lot of things, but low-key isnt one of them. powerful and colourful, direct, and with 313 references embedded in its dna, she pulls it off with style. elizabeths third record is no exception. it has found its home on our mothership label, burek. three happiness is tailor-made for the dance floor. it wont leave anyone with a pulse standing. playful synths, wonderful strings, and infectious groove make it impossible to ignore. knowledge revolution is layered and paced, painting a somewhat different picture. melancholy and a sense of mystery envelop this track, whose leitmotif vocal appears just frequently enough to provide insight into the title. the last track of this ep is fittingly titled noctilucent clouds. its a drumless track with a rhythmic main synth counterpointed by sounds which give off the impression of clouds shining through the darkness of winter nights. another amazing release from burek.

we hit you with the second single from jimpsters acclaimedsilent stars lp loaded with the good stuff! the album has received much love from djs and critics alike and its clear that after 25 years in the business jamie odell retains his reputation as one of the most talented and consistent electronic artists in the uk. as a&r and dj he also boasts a fine ear for emerging talent and here he hands over the reigns to two hotly tipped producers to rework his originals. first up we have the incredible peggy gou who takes on the sun comes up ft. jinadu.her speedy rise through the ranks over the past 12 months has been down to just a handful of brilliant eps on rekids and phonica and her skills as a club dj. the berlin based korean sits somewhere between detroit, london and berlin in sound and her dj sets are an assured, kinetic combination of dark, pulsing house and techno, broken beats and abstract compositions. her influences shine through on her remix which goes deep and musical whilst retaining an energetic drive for the dancefloor. perhaps the most mesmerizing, floor-focused track from the lp is up next, silent stars. an electronic tribal dance which builds to a speaker-wobbling sub-bass breakdown and wonderful chord section at the climax. next, a remix from west coast native urulu who came to jimpsters attention through his releases on lets play house, dirt crew and his own amadeus label. trying to describe his remix of where you areft. khalil anthony is no easy task, fusing elements of techno, broken beat and afro house, but check it out and if you can think of a suitable new sub genre to pigeonhole it with, let us know. closing the release we have the slow-burning, balearic-tinged beauty known as the sun comes up featuring jinadu on vocals. this is one to drop in the warm after-glow of a crazy night under the stars when tired legs and happy hearts crave a soulful groove to give them one last lift.

on thanksgiving 1989, kmart employee and audio enthusiast mark davis wandered behind the customer service desk to check out the store’s sound system, which looped muzak and top 40 plus ads and announcements under the banner of “kmrt, the kmart radio network.” when he found last month’s tape hadn’t been thrown out yet, he pocketed it and made a habit of doing this, collecting 56 tapes from 1989-1992. in september 2015, davis uploaded the tapes to archive.org with the humble intention of preserving them. but within a few weeks he became an internet celebrity among obscure media fans and supplemented the collection with reel-to-reel tapes from the 70s and 80s thanks to tom schwarzrock, who acquired them serendipitously along with a deck he purchased. the tapes are like a consumerist time capsule, a vaporwave trove of eerily familiar corporate ephemera extracted from its original context and purpose. similarly, attention kmart choppers is composed of pieces from this collection chopped up, resculpted, and mosaicked together by juicy the emissary, forming a new, distinctly contemporary sound while inheriting a haunting nostalgia that provokes memories burrowed deep in the subconscious

the motionless present is a collection of unreleased poems and soundscapes by the philadelphia-based artist and activist camae ayewa, who performs as moor mother. reverberating and rumbling through the thoracic cavity, few records spoke to the contemporary black american experience quite like moor mother’s 2016 protest album fetish bones. her first new material since that visceral and political work,the motionless present is a statement towards understanding the disconnect between humanity and injustice. the release features various new collaborations and previews of upcoming projects: black quantum futurism, moor jewelry, mental jewelry, 700 bliss and more. the motionless present was created in collaboration with the vinyl factory ahead of moor mother’s ctm festival performance at berghain. artwork designed by bcmh using the collage artwork of grassi.

with the next and twelfth installment of tiefenrausch the dub techno label sets foot on the new continent again. the deep sea journey is joined by san fransisco based artist federsen and brendon moeller aka echologist or beat pharmacy - who contributed a remix to the three track ep. “the myth ep” represents federsen raw and analogue signature sound. warm and distorted machine noises create the pad for minimal drum patterns, bass grooves and accentuated chord echoes. on the a-side federsen shows us his unique style with “contrasts”. brendon moeller on the other hand contributes his own sound and rounds up the ep with dubbed interpretation of federsens “murmer”. the ep ends with the original version of that track. the release is designed by alex ketzer who joins in for a collaboration with the illustrators magdalena paz and florian gassmann for the next releases of the tiefenrausch label. the audio is mastered by salz music and the ep comes on 180g vinyl and shrink wrapped.

over the past 8 years there has been a lot of speculation on who the artist(s) is/are behind this project. is it a collective of artists or a solo artist still remains to be answered. the secret initiative is a multi styled project ranging across the spectrum of acid techno, dub techno, hard techno & ebm mostly done in a 1990’s flavor but with a modern day punchy production sound. here on the latest release we have two peak time dance floor killers. “synesthete” a dark track-y techno climax-er with a whisper vocal sample repeating “i see the music, i hear the light” which builds into a monster of a track. on the flip side is the hard but hypnotic “return to mcmxc” which pays hommage to the 1990 frankfurt technoclub/dorian gray ebm techno sound.
