matrixxman has been a dekmantel regular for a couple of years now. the san francisco producer continues to impress with a new triptych for dekmantel records. over the course of three eps (rhythm, acid, polyphony), charles mccloud duff displays his versatile and original take on house and techno. the concept of the triptych is to explore the range within the confines of a particular limitation. this second ep sector ii: acid- shows an exercise in acid. similarly, the tb-303 may conjure certain knee-jerk reactions at a glance, but acid has the potential to cover a broader palette of emotion than one might initially expect. sector ii holds three squirming 303 sequences and the classic rhythmic drum programming of arrival, bad acid and i am matrix. rites on the other hand is more subtle and fluent, swinging with hazy acid flourishes and dynamic syncopation.

polyop was formed in 2015 by producers jack driscoll, harry orso and visual artist and programmer alex kempton. since then they have been researching and developing a visual-audio experience that fuses nature and tribal culture with the machine. ceremony is the first exploration of that aesthetic, with their own take on acid house, they take the subject on a hypnotic journey through an alternate sonic-visual reality. kemp mutates ceremony into something between disco and techno, the kick and bassline thick and pulsing, whilst the percussion syncopates infectiously. the track progresses into a crescendo, which is amplified by the cavernous feel of the mix. this is certain to hypnotise 3am dancefloor-pagans into a state of worship.

opening this essential release is the slow and spaced out groove of replicant v1, with fat synths and dark spacecraft sounds circling you as the drums grow ever bigger. shoulder of orion then drops into a rickety groove with soulful pads stretching off to the horizon as rough drums march below. proving he has real range, motor rotor is a deep and driving track that conveys a real sense of motion as it races along an intergalactic highway, and love on time picks up the pace yet further with twisted synths roaming free above a motorik kick and icy hi hats. last of all for the digital release, replicant v2 is a spacey and dramatic techno effort with widescreen pads and gurgling synths making for a turbulent ride. first vinyl bonus cut hang on is a forceful seven minutes of eerie and cosmic techno that stretches out in all directions as manic melodies rain down from above. lastly, traktion is full of ominous drones, crashing percussion and sombre pads and makes for a dramatic and driving track that is filled with pain

matuss returns to her absence seizure imprint february 2017 with ‘seizure no.6, comprising four original compositions from the new york based artist. since launching the absence seizure imprint in 2015 alongside producer friend abe duque, new yorks matuss has carved out an impressive back-catalogue with this new release marking its sixth and previous material garnering the attention of acts like derek plaslaiko, beaner, dj deep, twr72 and norman methner. once again julia matuss, better known as simply matuss, is at the controls to deliver four original compositions, the first of which la folie sees her deliver a haunting slice of tension building techno via throbbing bass, organic percussion hits and subtly evolving distorted rhythms. muirr follows and takes a more reserved strip back approach with swirling bass tones and sparse drums gradually building towards a frenzied fusion of psychedelic synth swells, vocal stabs and acidic hits. opening the flip side of the record is i hate valentines day, a murky five-minute number employing mind-bending low end drones, dynamic off-kilter percussion and sweeping atmospherics before acid slay closes, and as the name would suggest lays focus on tripped-out acid licks alongside chugging bass and minimalistic drums.

for its second release, the barcelona-based independent label venom recordings follows its pioneering path into new and forward-thinking techno soundwaves. the ep features two original tracks signed by dasein, as well as two remixes from vii circle and memorial home. in their original versions, “prometheus” and “zodiac” reflect the polish duo’s distinctive signature: a blend of obscure-minded groove with cinematic melodies. both tracks are defined by the layering of deep and immersive sounds, where the combination of restless, punctilious basslines and beats with pulsating synths reverb drops climax into a pure hypnotic and spacey atmosphere. for their interpretation, vii circle and memorial home magnify the minimal and cosmic nature of the originals, crafting an ambient-like wavy tempo that traverse a dark flavoured sonic landscape with a strong emotional aura. four pieces of electronic mastery which offer a captivating journey, to be savoured in the intimacy of its own soul or to be shared with nightclubbing fellows.
