slam city jams is back with its second release, produced by young brussel based artist kassett. this multi-talented dude not only makes great music, but also does visual arts (look at that amazing fanzine coming with the record) and has his own label & artist collective called midlife. kassett aka gavin vanælst isn’t about genres, but about emotions when it comes to his music. however, asking him what he would call the sound he makes, his simple answer is: rave ambient. the all i feel 1 million ep‘ is a record full of diversity. it reaches from emotional and dreamy, arp-based ambient tracks with rave and trance references, to broken beats, weird synth solos, up to a rough but melodious techno tune. finally the cherry on top of this special ep, is a remix by lobster theremin regular imre kiss. he delivered a dark and dubby version of the a2, that sounds like it was recorded underwater.

at a recent gig in macedonia, he played an incredible “live pure data” set, using real-time graphical data flow programming to create all his own sounds. with this huge wealth of knowledge and a hard drive stacked with unreleased productions, his ‘spookz ep’ is long overdue. he describes his music as industropical or funkyndustrial and when you hear his two original cuts on this ep, these descriptions become more apparent. ‘spookz’ is dappled and harmonious with sweeping electronics and in-depth grooves. ‘prance for me’ is atmospheric and quaking in its deliverance, showing all his innovation and creativity. the ep comes with two stellar remixes. the first is by el prevost who delivers a grinding reworking of ‘prance for me’. el prevost has been forging his sound over the last decade, gradually shifting into the house and techno scene in particular for uk label, third ear and his most recent self-run label, no speakers, which boasts a varied artist roster that includes doorly, red rack em, wbeeza, 65d mavericks and gabbi lopez. rommek’s remix of ‘spookz’ follows and shows why this recently emerging artist is fast becoming a definitive force on the techno scene. fellow loose lips collective member, rommek made his production debut on weekend circuit, before joining james ruskin’s iconic blueprint label who released his ‘moth hole ep’, plus an appearance on their 20th anniversary compilation, ‘structures and solutions’ gaining him an admirable reputation for textured sound designs.

holic trax off shoot monoklo hits a third firing release now with a new ep from verrina & ventura. verrina & ventura are an italian pair who make fresh house and techno sounds and run the all inn, only 300 and howl labels. they are busy people who put out a lot of music and here serve up some brilliantly unhinged sounds for this darker, more club focussed series. up first, metaluna is a freaky track with shimmering voices and prickly, ticking percussion all underpinned by warm belches of sub-bass. it s a late night cut with plenty of unhinged atmosphere in its glitchy grooves. ork is less kinetic and more settled in a bulky, heavyweight groove. scraping perc and icy hi hats bristle and brim as muted synth stabs bring some colour and soul to the party. the deep and delicious dhrawn has big techno hi hats and more glitching, patchy machine sounds all run through with warming chords. trilling vocals go off in the distance and the whole thing manages to be emotive and human as well as devastatingly direct and dancefloor orientated. last of all, nihil is another visceral track with industrial synths, scurrying bass and sliding drums that makes you want to jerk your body. this is a brilliantly off balance ep full of arresting and inventive grooves aimed squarely at the floor

the first inner shift encounter with ewan jansen was several years ago on a pair of test pressings, from mike grant of moods and grooves. the label hadn t even begun yet, but ewan created a huge impression and wasn t to be forgotten by them later. ffwd to 2016/17, enter: return to hyperbola. the first track in, you get a good tech house/deep house vibe called docking lane , fully equipped with lovely atmospheres, a driving kick and intelligent chords. next is bulkhead, mainly defined by a full-sounding, broken beat rhythm and expressive keyboards. b1 is deceleration , another 4-4 deep house number, but witha subtle quirkiness and over all moody feel. on the b2 is perspex, featuring a funky bass, nice pads and elevating keyboard part. dont miss out, ewan never fails to impress.

siince the release of his debut album, substantial, in 2004, volker bertelmann – aka hauschka – has, slowly but surely, earned a remarkable reputation as a purveyor of imaginative, distinctive, prepared piano music. this isn’t, to be fair, a heavily populated field, but it’s one he’s made his own, and while some might have dismissed his work early on as a novelty, bertelmann has proven himself to be uncommonly inventive, coaxing ever more unprecedented, euphonic sounds and rhythms out of his instrument. even so, on what if – which finds him adding player pianos (also known as pianolas) to his armoury – bertelmann expands his range even further, defying expectations and delivering what is without doubt his most ingenious album yet.

minimalistic art sublabel, 0000, kicks things off with scribble acid, an ep from man at the top, brayan valenzuela. title track scribble acid is a mixture of acid sounds and saturated kicks combined to create an industrial techno line. 0000 differs, highlighting the simpler sound of acid. error makes use of metallic percussion to devastating effect but is lined with pauses in all the right places to allow you to breathe.

the 3rd release from detroit influenced japanese techno label select kashiwa. derrick may s already played a1.twilight and shadow. a2.life sounds like mixture of japanese game and animation music plus detroit techno. and anacatesthesia track b1.walking on the cloud. all three tracks consist of japanese sensitivity and detroit style funkiness + soulful sound. this is more classic detroit than recent tracks from detroit.

im klanggarten is the very first release on frank wiedemanns newly established bigamo label by the musician, video artist, author and dj rainer buchmüller aka fred und luna. it began as an homage to german electronic music of the 70s and 80s known as kraut. however, rainer gives his style its own name: elektrokraut or krautelektro, in which he blends kraut elements, such as repetitive rhythms, with beautiful melodies and modern electronic sounds. this lp comes as a double vinyl in a gatefold cover!

even with the first sounds, the organic structures can be heard - and felt. a crystalline crackling of the hi-hat very close to the ear, as if the black volcanic sand of lanzarote would trickling on the metal. the echo of the samples does not point to endless distances, rather, it swings up the cochlea and enters into a special world in which sound material develops a delicate self-life.

the cold busted label unearths more funky nuggets from the fertile russian soil with this brilliant 7“ single from moscow’s anatoly ice. dj, producer, and host of the funk and beyond parties and radio show (running for nearly ten years), anatoly ice has been drawn to the swing of a phat beat for a long while. this single bursts with old school funk and new school attitude, beginning with ”something happened (2me)“. a vintage drum kit and melodic horns are joined by a big hip hop rhythm as the vocals and horn section are expertly cut up and rearranged. the song’s catchy hook – also the title – is left nearly intact and should playfully dance around any b-boy’s head as he does his thing. flip the record for ”light”, which exhibits a strutting breakbeat and some g-funk sauce in its prominent synth line. funky piano, guitar, and bass provide the backdrop, soundtracking a midnight cruise through the bad (as in good) part of town. hold tight … anatoly ice is at the wheel.

after more than 2 years of waiting berlin-based artist fabian dikof is back with a new release on best works records his ep the who his trade-mark sound remains: catchy arpeggio-sounds with tech-house synth usage. with these elements he creates a very mature tapestry that gives the tune great dynamic play in its rhythmic morphosis. the track camouflage features berlin-based vocalist ann weller from the band ann & bones. last but not least remixer dubspeeka reworks the original giving it a more minimal techno-flavour and with its tool-character it hits the dance-floor full on. the who ep is yet another great stepping stone for fabian dikof. there is more to come from this gifted producer.

lessismore record label, founded in 2003 by the dutch dj and producer alexis tyrel together with mbc, has been home for mostly his own releases under all his monikers and various artist compilations. “return to planet alpha” continues in this tradition, being a second long-player of alexis tyrel after his debut “newtradition” from 2011.
“return to planet alpha” is a collection of elegant techno tracks which instead of following the now so popular dark and destructive path focuses on daily moods and airy atmosphere, which is closer to open air and lounge than to sweaty pits of contemporary rave. but that doesn’t mean that the twelve tracks are just indistinctive background music. for one thing, tyrel is a master of slick and tight beat foundations of kick drums and bass, often smoothed out with cool synth pads, onto which he layers all kinds of rhythmical chains, subtle melodic ideas and sounds ranging from vintage synths and industrial bits to organic textures and even field recordings.

back to the vinyl rules, spectral rebel is proud to present its collaboration with the dutch duo abstract division, featuring two originals and two remixes by mike storm and re:axis. the good architecture of -convergent- opens the ep with a slow but strong climax, hypnotic rhythms and ambient sounds create an elegant atmosphere, surrounded by a resonant voice. -divergent- shows a deeper concept of techno: the emotional melody keeps the track into a new landscape, merging with a heavy basslines. mike storm is a familiar name to the label. his remix reshapes the original track -convergent- and takes us into an interstellar trip through the cosmos. the atmosphere is intense. re:axis version of -divergent- is a high-energy piece and it s definitely the powerful techno punch of this ep. classic drum sounds combine with vibrating kicks and some loopy cuts. spr007 is an ecstasy for ears and a proper bang for dancefloors.

repress alert: continuing to do great service to reissue culture, emotional rescue this time look to the nigh-on insurmountable back catalogue of late manchester-based producer muslimgauze, whose influence can be tangibly heard in the likes of shackleton. suns of arqa were equally enamoured with fusing the haunting qualities of middle eastern music with other styles, in their own case dub, and so their selection to remix a whole host of muslimgauze tracks made perfect sense. now the engrossing and otherworldly jaunt through distant lands enjoys a plush new vinyl release on which to truly enjoy the mixture of soothing and savage sounds.

folamour was responsible for one of the dreamiest, most colourful deep house records of recent times - the brilliant shakkei ep on all city so hopes are naturally high for this excursion on the producer s recently launched fhuo records. he kicks off proceedings with the thrillingly addictive very first touch, where dreamy pads and looped party samples cluster around a snappy, jazz-fuelled house groove, before ratcheting the energy levels up a notch or two via the rubbery slap bass, driving drum machine beats and warm rhodes chords of alerte a babylon. in between, you ll find pravis l estaque, a stomping deep house floor-burner blessed with some seriously good, jammed-out electric piano solos.

the incredible first album by tim maia brazils greatest soul star in the 70s, and for good reason too given that tim was one of the few who could match the depth of american soul and funk at the time!

this ep is the product of a wide-spanning collective with high personal standards of artistic expression. with spirited vitality lukas endhardt fills the air with the warmth of hot summer days, and fresh air of dark, beating nights. he shows undeniable skills for stimulating progression, which spirits you away into atmospheric sounds and grounded beats. the remixes on this ep set different moods and emotions in to play, and manage still to form a certain unity throughout the tracks.

in the early 1980s, nigerian was booming and recording studios used the oil money sloshing around to fit their studios with the latest state-of-the-art recording equipment. with the equipment came a new, slicker sound and a new breed of producers like lemmy jackson, jake sollo, tony okoroji and nkono teles who became bigger stars than the musicians they recorded. such was the fate of sony enang with don’t stop that music

arbouretum has been called “the best of the millennial classic rock bands, a guitarfuzzed powerhouse.” the band, founded by guitarist and vocalist dave heumann, effortlessly weaves its melodies and guitar solos with often hypnotic rhythms of bassist corey allender and drummer brian carey around the deliberate keyboard of matthew pierce to lift the vocals. the results are a full sounds delivered with a striking sense of intimacy. throughout their time together, the baltimore-based band have been praised for their ability to weave elaborate vocal lines, and guitar solos that often unravel into extended improvisation, but never with as much fnesse as on song of the rose. in less practiced hands, these ideas could easily fall into contrivance, but on song of the rose, arbouretum use these elements to perfect their craft of storytelling in song, both lyrically and sonically.

moving music records present the previous unreleased soundtrack to the norwegian cult movie, heaven and hell. a soundtrack written and composed by norwegian maestro egil monn-iversen. it features some of the key norwegian jazz musicians, terje rypdal, jan garbarek and the late svein christiansen. jan erik kongshaug mixed the session.
it was originally recorded summer 1969 and planned for a full release, but it never happened, until now! one of the most exciting norwegian releases this year.
